Adding a tiny bit of organic starter fertilizer to each pot after planted helps with the adjustment from water to soil. My Noni had a never ending supply of basil plants growing on her kitchen windowsill. The light was perfect. She made the best pasta sauce I have ever tasted and besides the tomatoes the next ingredient was lots of fresh basil. Yum! She had a cardinal rule: always use fresh basil, fresh parsley and fresh garlic, never dried! Miss my Noni and her incredible cooking. 🍝🌿

I've lost count of the money I've spent and lost on grocery store-bought basil. This video and the one on separating the plants crammed into the original pot has motivated me to try again. Thanks for the encouragement.

Reporting back, my plants were so successful that I harvested about 6 cups of basil. Enough for 2 batches of pesto with extra to boot! Thanks again for this video. My basil plants started flowering and I didn’t know what to do, but I just followed your advice to cut the plant and let it regrow. Fingers crossed I didn’t wait too long 🤞🏻 Anyway, thanks again. I love basil and this video was the key for me. You’re the man! Cheers from across the pond.

OK, is a bay leaf the same as a basil leaf? I have looked but can not find a bay plant, nor seeds. If they are not the same, where can I buy, bay plants or seeds? Thank you to who ever can help. I know it sounds like a stupid question, but, hey, haven't found the answer.😂😂
@ConnieP92

No not the same thing. They are completely different plants. Basil is a herb and bay leaves come from a tree. You could probably find basil in your local grocery store or both plants at a good nursery…all the best with it!

And, if you wind up with more basil than you can use it freezes well. Pick leaves from the stems and put them in a good-quality ziplock freezer bag. Thaw out a handful as needed-if you want the leaves chopped, bash the frozen leaves in the bag, they will shatter into small pieces. Don’t freeze for more than a few months as the taste and scent will eventually fade.
@ninjakiller275
@ninjakiller275 29 күн бұрын
As you mentioned, all the stems in the pot are individual plants. Just replant them 2/3 per pot, and you're golden. No need to propagate, wait for them to grow roots or anything. The plants are already adjusted to soil, in contrast to propagated plants. Break up the soil in the pot from the supermarket, clean off the old soil under running water and untangle the roots gently, replant, done! Although, propagating plants is fun though.

You can also use an exacto knife or razor blade and peel a very thin layer of the stem at the very bottom and/or dip the stem in honey or a commercial rooting hormone and then place directly into a starter pot and a good potting soil mix. Once your new clones have taken hold you can use supercropping to make the plant grow bushier and produce more branches and leaves. That's when you pinch (or slice with a sterile blade or clippers) the top new leaf node on a branch, forcing the two lower side nodes to begin growing like their own new branches.

in my experience, clear glass works better for propagation than coloured glass. For some reason the roots won't grow unless the stem gets the right amount, or kind of light. Also, my greenest and most vibrant basil last year was grown hydroponically, or at least using hydropinic liquid fertiliser with an NPK of roughly 4-0.5-3 (though I think it would be even better if the proportion of potassium were even lower still...) having lots of nitrogen keeps them from flowering or becoming too "woody", by then it also tastes bad. Let's Grow 🌱my dudes

My attempt to pot store lettuce and celery had this effect: the new shoots cannabalized the existing scrap but did not root. Lettuce in dirt thus died and I just "saved" (?) the celery and am trying to root it in water and some Aerogarden secret sauce to kill the mush around it (it's anti-fungal - not self-proclaimed but acts that way, trust me). But the basic growth is beautiful. I should have rooted it in water from the start. Did not. Onions don't care. But these did. Should have washed off the chemical inhibitors too. Will see. Bought a second small aero garden because I know that works especially for supergreens.

Going to try growing a source of Royal Thai basil this year after finding seeds; will keep this in mind after they're plants to increase the amount we have. We've NEVER had supermarket purchased basil start wilting and dying before it got used up in cooking. But the containers it's sold in here look like they're about twice the size of what you're showing, maybe three times as much. They do have lots and lots of stems in them so I assume the roots are similarly packed. A thought: if the complaint is that the supermarket potted basil wilts/dies before you can use it all, and this shows root development and healthy leaves two weeks later... couldn't you also do this to extend the health of the shoots long enough to when you need them for your culinary endeavors? Thanks for the informative video!

Add fine sand or diatomaceous earth to the top then botttom feed w/water..the sand/earth will help deter&kill adult flies & prevent new larvae hatching

@@vessel4thefather thank you very much for your kind advice.. but, i already tried that. That's why i hoped Sheffield made plants could possibly have a suggestion i had not heard of before. I will write here what i already tried : 1.) Diatomaceous earth, 2. ) Nematodes in the potting soil 3.) biological insecticide >plant died! 4.) Cinnamon 5.) vinegar 6.) dry out the soil totally, heat the pot and plant it over again. 7.) the yellow sticky stickers! I must say that the Yellow stickers, optil now, is the only thing that works against the flies.. the larve however, in due time, will hatch again .. but then i put new yellow stickers and those flies will stick and die., hopefully without having laid eggs already. So that works..but you have to repeat the stickers again and again.. So i wondered if there was something to make sure these flies wouldn't even come close again ever! ;-) Warm greetings form Holland!

I did this but each clone was weaker than the previous one. After 3-6 rounds they weren't worth it anymore.

Maybe that depends on solid quality? I see a really small pot from the supermarket, it means for me the solid is really healthy and nutritious. But also my basil dies in winter, cause of the lack of sunlight

If you have an English accent and you say the word basil, it matters not what comes afterward. The topic becomes Fawlty Towers.

Nice video! Can you keep the basil growing in the water rather than move to soil?

Yep they’ll continue to grow in water. You’ll need to fertilise sometimes

I kill basil plants so fast. I dont know if I'm underwatering or overwartering, giving them too much sunlight on the window sill or too little sunlight (window shade down). I wanted to make bruschetta tomorrow but I think I won't have enough basil. 😭😭 Thanks for this video! I hope I can master the art of NOT killing basil.

What do you do with the stems below your trim point? Do you trim those down to just above the previous node or leave them alone?

Q - Can you tell me the best way to foster potato eyes? I have a yellow under a grow lamp with 1/2 cm of water on the bottom of its container. It's eyeing. But do I need more (higher water level) or less water (damp cloth instead)? The red isn't showing progress. Same conditions. Washed the chemicals off already.

Grow More Basil Than You Can Possibly Eat...if your basil hunger can wait 2 weeks for the roots to appear + 5 weeks for the plant to grow.

This is like the compost industry, I worked in my mothers ex partners worm farm for 4 years. All hand done, Starter packs was 250g of compost worms and 100g booster worms. We sold the worms for 13$ Aud for a starter pack, but the big store which I cannot name sold it for 45$. The thing is they contained the worm eggs. Each egg can contain 1000 juvenile worms. You just feed them milk powder, chicken feed and small dog feed, water the carpet on top and you will get thousands and thousands of more worms. The main issue was people would not keep the worms cool in high temperature. You need to have a carpet or lining on top of the worm compost bins and water it (not too much). Worms don't like dry hot weather and if the water saturation levels are too much they will come up to the surface. Juveniles look like tiny white worms. But they will go for the milk powder and watered down small dog food and grow up quick. Food will bring them up if you want your vegies and plants to grow quick.
