That's very cool, what have you got them planted in Billie? They are quite vulnerable and frail when young. I have to clean them often to keep the insects off. They seem to survive whatever I plant them in though.

thank you for your videos. it may be worth mentioning that propagating this plant by cutting will cause you to lose the yellow edge margins. the proper method of snake plant propagation in my opinion is via division for two reasons: 1. no waiting and 2. variegation/look of original plant is retained

Also your confidence and comfort in front of the camera really shines through on the new videos when compared to your older ones. Excellent work, look how far you've come! I have a 20" snake plant leaf that I cut off because it was leaning totally horizontal (maybe from moving it in the store?) I put it in a little bit of H2O for awhile and have not had any roots. Can I grow it as is in H2O like your previous video even though there are no roots? Should I just put it in good draining soil? I really don't want to cut it anymore than I need to. Thank you. I have learned a lot from you.

Thanks Wendy. No I haven’t but sounds like a great idea. I’d imagine you need a stem cutting underneath a leaf node.
@dw3403

You need to do it in spring or fall. Take about a 4 inch nice newer (last years growth) strip the leaves from the lower part of the branch. Dip it in rooting hormone over all of the places you stripped the leaves from and the bottom of the clipping also. Tap the excess off. Use a pencil to poke a hole in the pot with nice soil in it. Carefully put the clipping in it. Push the soil around the clipping to get rid of the air. Water it. Keep it out of full sun and keep it moist. If you have a glass jar or something to put on top like a green house that would be great but not necessary. You need to do more than 1 because it doesn't always work and the more you try the more chances you have. Make sure you have at least 4 leaves remaining because they are still doing the work of photosynthesis.

Hi, very clearly explained video. I’ve watched many variations of propagation and am curious why don’t you allow the cuttings to callous before placing into perlite? Has this method never encouraged cuttings to rot? Also how deep is the layer of perlite?
@SheffieldMadePlants

Thank you. I find that you don't really need to. Perlite is probably 3 or 4 inches deep.

I have a question. If I want to try my hand at placing the cuttings into a glass of water, do I still add the rooting powder to the cuttings? If so, each time I change the water? I really want to do it in water so I can gleefully watch the roots grow. Thanks in advance for your answers and for helping people like me learn how to care for plants. I'm beginning to feel confident 'I CAN!' with your direction.

The plant nurseries in my country sell snake plants in pots where the soil is completely dried up and pulled away from the sides of the pot. They look alarming but the plants are happy as can be. They really can get very, very dry without complaints.

I cut up a leaf and put it into a humid perlite box like in the video. Unfortunately after a week the box was dropped and the cuttings were exposed for a few hours over night. I've restored it now and put it in a safer place but I wonder will it still have a chance to root or is it doomed due to being disturbed?

Hi! I just potted my snake plant cuttings into soil to propagate. I failed propagation box with perlite and failed at water propagation as well. Roots were rotting..😞😭 So i am doing soil now.. it is compost65% + perlite 35% ish mix and potted in terracotta pot. Also i dried cuttings for 2days prior to plant this in the soil… as I read this will prevent from cutting to be rotten.. How often should i water this? When it is half dry or bone dry etc.. i really do not want to fail this time.😢 if you can help me with this, that would be awesome. Thank you!
