My Dark Vanessa is the novel that has readers buzzing and critics reaching for superlatives, an explosive debut from Kate Elizabeth Russell that looks at relationship between a pupil and her teacher. Kate visited us some months ago to tells us more and to share three books that influenced her in writing it. (with apologies for corrupted sound in first section)

My dark Vanessa is one of the best books I've ever read. It accurately describes what it's like to survive abuse. The denial, the self blame, the confusion, the underlying anger etc etc etc. It makes me feel much less alone. I think it's important that people read the story of someone who isn't a 'perfect victim' (perfect victims don't really exist and it's nice and validating to read a realistic story) I'm glad she has become such a successful author. She just writes extremely beautifully (the way she describes dissociation is simple and mind-blowing at the same time!!!!!!!). Thank you for this video.

Having just read this book ... I have to say, it is one of the most challenging novels I have read in a very long time. It is confusing ? Yes. Does it tie up all the loose ends ? No. But then I believe it was intended as such. Is this book worth reading YES IT IS !!!

It wasn't confusing to me at all, but I lived through basically the same exact senario as the character- and its highly accurate depiction but could imagine for those who haven't experienced it, it would be hard to understand her decisions and thinking.

I bought this novel yesterday and I haven’t been able to stop reading, I’m almost done with the book. She really captivated the experience of ptsd happening during a haunting experience with someone you once had thought was loving, caring, real and kind but it was all manipulation and abuse. This is by far my favorite book.

After reading this deeply disturbing book, "Flinch" by Alanis Morissette kept running through my head What's it been over a decade? It still smarts like it was four minutes ago We only influenced each other totally We only bruised each other even more so What are you my blood? You touch me like you are my blood What are you my dad? You affect me like you are my dad How long can a girl be shackled to you How long before my dignity is reclaimed How long can a girl stay haunted by you Soon I'll grow up and I won't even flinch at your name Soon I'll grow up and I won't even flinch at your name Where've you been? I heard you moved to my city My brother saw you somewhere downtown I'd be paralyzed if I ran into you My tongue would seize up if we were to meet again What are you my god? You touch me like you are my god What are you my twin? You affect me like you are my twin How long can a girl be tortured by you? How long before my dignity is reclaimed And how long can a girl be haunted by you Soon I'll grow up and I won't even flinch at your name Soon I'll grow up and I won't even flinch at your name So here I am one room away from where I know you're standing A well-intentioned man told me you just walked in This man knows not of how this information has affected me But he knows the color of the car I just drove away in What are you my kin? You touch me like you are my kin What are you my air? You affect me like you are my air

Beautiful novel. I just finished it and it was so incredibly conflicting. Heartbreaking and realistic. It’s one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time

I’m curious to know your perspective since I think of this book so often. Why were you so mad at Vanessa? I’m not trying to argue about a book, I’m genuinely interested in what you thought because no one I know in my personal life has read this book (so I have no one to talk about it with lol).

@@dizzy_star because she was a victim trapped in her own "fairytale" and she couldnt recognize it. I was mad because she was so blinded, naive, easy to manipulate. I never had an affair with my teacher but experienced toxic relationship so every single time I hear about a girl who's not mature enough, clever enough, Im kind of mad at myself. Sorry for my English and greetings from Cracow, Poland! :)

@@beatagarczynskaa185 Isn't that precisely why someone like Strane would pick her, noticing her vulnerabilities that he could warp her into what he needed her to be?
