There's the great board games, the amazing ones, and then the ones you really hold dear to your heart. After creating a tier list containing dozens of games in my collection, ranging from The Resistance, Food Chain Magnate, Chaos in the Old World, and even Twilight Imperium 4, I've decided to sit down and really ponder over my top ten games of all time. Now with Gloomhaven and Catan added to choose from, this is the 2020 definitive list of Shelfside's Ashton's top 10 games he's ever played.
Ashton grew up watching a lot of the Dice Tower's Top 10 List, so there's certainly some inspiration from those videos in here. He's been collecting since late high school, and has definitely been in that BUY BUY BUY stage many times during his journey.

Great top ten man. I can tell it's an honest one because you didn't shy away from some titles that gamer snobs might consider to be "lightwieght" or "party" games. I also love Mansions of Madness and I might end up playing it today just because of you mentioning it. Also, awesome CaH dig - I see what you did there. :-)

I've been playing boardgames as a hobby for two decades and just found this channel. What I find fascinating in this Top 10, is that he really doesn't care about how old or new games are. A lot of players, and that includes me, are drawn to the "new" things and here he comes, putting Tigris and Euphrates in his Top10 but at the same time he doesn't seem snobby/hipsterish about it all and has new games on the List as well. There are many kinds of gamers and there is no right or wrong way, but I do admire how he doesn't care at all if a game has gotten dusty or has been iterated on by other games or isn't a looker.

I'm so delighted to see you add Takenoko to the Top Ten! I adore it too. So much fun and laughter while playing it. A lot of reviewers dismiss it, so I always like to see it get the love I feel it deserves. I've been lucky enough to play the giant Collectors Edition at a convention, and it's gorgeous! I completely agree with you on BSG too. I bought the core game the week it launched in Ireland and played it TEN times in the first seven days. It became my most played game quickly and probably still stands at the top. I have tons and tons of hilarious stories associated with it. I too have all the expansions. You should google "Dynamic BSG Rulebook" for an incredible resource that makes adding expansion modules a breeze. I'd leave a link, but KZfaq doesn't like links in comments. Finally, if you click through to my channel, I have my own to ten list I did a while back. Nothing professional, just for fun.

BSG is one of my most played games. It is definitely the one that has the most wear and tear (good thing I have card sleeves!). It's also the only game that I don't mind that the cards have screen grabs, because the cards refer to actual plot elements from the show. Sadly, I haven't had a chance to play it in at least a couple of years. I miss it.

I cried when I saw Battlestar Galactica. I came into the hobby too late, and as you said, it's now out of print and I'm not ready to mortgage the house to buy a copy. But I live with the dream that one day, whoever owns the rights to the board game will come to their senses and do a Kickstarter campaign with a new expansion where you can get a pledge level as an all in and pickup the lot. Only then I will be ready for the good Lord to take me home as my life will be complete having owned and played it.

@@stevefratus1546 Yes, of course. But the context doesn't match the expression. Blowing something out of the water is like blowing someone's cover, or turning something not-well-known into something big! What he means is: it blew me away, it blew me off my feet. EDIT: after researching it, it IS used correctly. It was just my impression of the saying (which is not correct) that blew me out of the water ;) It can also mean: totally defeat or destroy something/someone. Which kinda happened to me, now.

The randomnesses of combat is brutal in Chaos in the old world ... One of my friends in my gaming group had such but luck playing this game several years ago ... He kept rerolling and failing every single time even with the maxed amount of dice ... it was unbelievable and funny at the same time, but sadly out of frustration he resigned and promised never ever again to play this game again nor any other with dice combat ... and The chaos in the old world is a literally the reason why we now avoid any games with dice combat system unless dice are only used as a modifier to change outcome a little!

For Dominion Expansions, I'd recommend Dark Ages, Empires, Adventures or Renaissance if you want something that has some significant changes. Renaissance is quite easy going, not too many big changes, Dark Ages has a lot of interesting things in it and Empires and Adventures do some interesting/weird things too. You should also play Seaside if you haven't already, if you've not seen Duration cards then you're going to love that

Haha no surprise BSG is your #1 (same for me)! 2 Recommendations related to y’all’s love for Dominion and card games(i have a similar love for card games and dominion and both of these are in my top 20): Puzzle Strike 3rd Edition -dominion(deck-builder) but instead of cards there are poker chips which are your move-list to your character specific fighter going head-to-head in a gem-powered battle Tetris to see who can deliver the unholiest smack down. It's sweaty, exciting, and quick, and the forced-buy rule (where you _must_ buy a new chip every turn) really keeps the pressure on - none of this "buy two chips then sit on your haunches" crap. Codex: Card-time-strategy(my number #3 game all-time) -(basically Warcraft/starcraft the card game) My love for Android Netrunner, Magic, and Yugioh is great but THIS game blew those out of the water for me personally. "Players each control three different heroes and have access to a tech tree that allows them to use different strategies each time they play. The goal of the game is to destroy the opponent's base. To do this, players build up an army of units and heroes. Players determine the exact composition of their armies as they play by adding cards to their deck based on the tech they've chosen to pursue." Beware, though this game really is fairly easy to learn it has a LOT depth to it making it VERY hard to play with newcomers. Both by same designer David Sirlin(which many don’t like as a person but he’s made some of the best board games that resonate with me out the near thousand that I have played and they are built for endless replayability, well balanced gameplay, and incredible depth) Having watched nearly all your vids and realizing just how similar our tastes are I highly recommend giving these games a chance.

I have both games. It may not be as epic as the 2010 game, but it is a lot easier to get to the table, a lot shorter for one thing - and I love the moving tableau mechanic, where you have access to all of the terrain types which are above and to the left of the card you want to play and once you play it the card gets shifted all the way to the left again. This way, you can build up for the more expensive terrain type.

Not quite a "literal ripoff" to be fair, the basic mechanics are the same but individual character abilities add a whole dimension beyond Bang! Like way beyond Bang!'s limited scope of strategy.

Old guy suggestions- Buy basic Squad Leader and its Cross of Iron expansion - from Avalon Hill, -Greatest war board-game, stay away from ASL Get a copy of Divine Right- TSR.(costs $$) and War of the Ring- FantasyFlight. Fortress America is good too,

After your video I started to thinking about the CIV board game. Our taste in case of boardgames is really simiular, but i think the most important thing in a boardgame the player interaction. How much is the player interaction in case of CIV and what expansions are crucial? Btw great channel, You guys deserve more followers!
@Shelfside
@Shelfside 3 жыл бұрын
There's typically tons of player interaction in CIV: First off the military victory possibility just makes everything exciting on the map. Then there's competing for barbarian/relic/hut objectives on the map. But there's also tons of trading that can happen, and cards that provide bonuses to an ally as well! We've found that its pretty difficult to actually win without politicking in some way, because by using alliances you'll have access to a lot more resources. The Wisdom and Warfare one is crucial, but while you're at it, if you just pick up the other expansion you'll have access to all the races, and that just feels great :)

Liked your video and respect for toplisting 3 of my favs--sgs--dominion--and takenoko. I will definately give civ and last word a try they look so fun. One thing is dominion gets exponentially more fun and difficult with each expansion and there are like 12 of them..and also there's an online version that's very cheap to play check it out if anyones interested dominion.games/

Sanguosha you should buy the 2 heroes version of it (forgot what it's called in English). More balance (lots of op heroes are nerfed), more combo, and more fun. It's straight-up changed from king vs outlaw into 4 different factions (you never know if you're the majority or minority) and the card design is way better!

If you haven't got around to trying more dominion expansions yet, I really recommend going for empires. All the cards in it are great, and it has some other neat things outside of just the cards including some alternative scoring conditions that can really make the game more interesting if you've played a lot of dominion already.
