Old-timey country and bluegrass tunes from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s are spinning in this listening session. Banjo and guitar pickin', violin fiddlin', and harmonica blowin' - plenty of all of that in these toe-tapping tunes on 78rpm records. Enjoy! Thank you for watching!

Being a massive Country music fan from the UK, I've collected many of these early recordings on CD. Bluegrass music originated with the Monroe Brother's, in the 30s. Before that all types of Country music was called Hillbilly music. I actually met Bill Monroe at the Opry in the 90s. Also the term Country and western is in accurate as the correct term is Country music and Western Swing.

"Hillbilly" is the catch all term for 1920's and 30's old timey music. "Country and western" is also the term for some of it. You'll know it when you hear the difference. Charlie Poole - Hillbilly, Ernest Tubb - country and western. Bluegrass was Kentucky's specific regional flavor of hillbilly music that became popularized and now is (inaccurately) associated with all hillbilly string band music in the minds of mainstream audiences. To call everything from Gid Tanners Skillet Lickers to the Weems string band "bluegrassy" would be inaccurate though. I feel like it was sometime in the 1940's when "country and western" just got shortened to "country" and became preferable to "Hillbilly", but every collector of early country music I know just calls it "Hillbilly". "COUNTRY the twisted roots of rock n' roll" by Nick Tosches is good reading on this subject. Neat show. Cheers!

Columbia University's (NYC) used to play this music on its country shows. The last record is practically high fidelity. Missed seeing your videos for several months. You just popped up tonight when I clicked on KZfaq.

Great stuff, Jeff! The harmonica on the last one, wow. Really enjoyed these. I loved the story of your Mom and Show Me The Way To Go Home. I hope someday you can find a copy with the verse that your Mom would sing. 40 minutes felt like 10! Enjoy your weekend!

Hey, I know you didn't ask for it but just wanted to give you some editor style feedback. Just a couple things that jumped out at me. Carson Robison is pronounced Row-buh-sin. Like a row boat, and Hoke rice is pronounced Hoke, like poke, but with an H instead of a P. Also I'm pretty sure you just misspoke when you said Tony Russell's Country music records book was 41-42. It's 1921-1942. And the final thing is the recording location of the Bill Brown record. Above the song titles on the upper left of the page, under the musician personnel is the location, New Orleans, LA.
