She was very attractive in her prime but lacked versatility. I think Stanley took it upon himself to the best of his abilities a real performance that didn't come off as phony. The more I watch _The Shining_ (and I have seen it between 18 and 127 times), the more I appreciate Shelley's role. She's a woman who goes almost invisibly from meek to badass during the course of the film. There is no point which we can definitely identify her making the transition (though the staircase scene with the baseball bat comes close) because it's so organic. And I use the word "badass" deliberately: tell me that the Wendy in the last reel wouldn't have pit herself, knife vs. axe, against Jack to give her son every possible chance to survive. She started the film as an enabler and ended it as a punisher.
@NotMorganFreeman.
@NotMorganFreeman. 2 жыл бұрын
She was far from a punisher. She barely escaped Jack and she was a hysterical mess up until the time Dick Halloran showed up in the snowcat, because that's what Kubrick wanted. That's why she had to do her takes so many times. There is no way kubrick would have had her do a 180 and turn into Sigourney Weaver.

@@laurenralph5968 It is a toughie for me. Like - from what I hear he was the same with everybody. To the point, no BS, and if we have to do it 100 times then we are gonna do it 100 times. People like Jack took it like a fun challenge. Maybe Shelley is more fragile and didn't handle it as well. I guess you can argue that there is a world where you can try and understand the person in front of you and see that they can't handle it. Maybe Stanley didn't do that. But then what do you do? You can't compromise your movie. So what do you do. Fire her out of kindness cause she can't handle your process? Isn't that worse? He did treat her like he treated everybody else. I'm sorry that Ms. Duvall had such a rough time on The Shining. I hope she reads these comments, though. IMO, her performance merited accolades. I think all of the lead characters in the film did an absolutely outstanding job. And despite the opinions of critics at the time, the fact that this film has a 40-year track record of being a top thriller movie of all time should speak for itself. As far as Stephen King's criticism of her character (and I love Stephen King too - - he's among my favorite authors) but I think he missed a lot of subtlety in Duvall/Kubrick's onscreen depiction of Wendy Torrance. What I saw was a woman, essentially trapped in a snowbound hell, trying to protect her kid from a man she once loved and trusted while his mind was melting down into complete madness. I thought her character was smart, capable and resourceful. And in the midst of this, she also desperately worked to placate Jack for as long as she could while still trying to make Danny feel protected. His character's resilience also speaks to the strength of Wendy. It's easy to watch a horror flick and say, "I'd do this" but in reality, the character of Wendy was pretty heroic. She didn't even panic with that bat or the knife. I would have been frozen in place. In fact, I learned something from this movie. In a physical confrontation, it's better to keep moving and talking, even if it seems ineffectual, because it might help to keep your reflexes and reactions from tensing up so much that they're useless. Anyway, Ms. Duvall/Wendy is tremendously impressive - - actor and character. And more kudos again to Nicholson, Lloyd and Crothers as well, along with a perfect supporting cast. I love this film. I just hope Shelley Duvall knows how very much her work on it has been appreciated - - if not by 'critics' then by millions and millions of people worldwide. 40 years of devoted fans with new fans discovering this film and being completely bowled over by it every day, should say it all. So yes, Ms. Duvall, if you're reading these comments, please know that your performance was magnificent and that your hard work showed. And speaking for a couple of folks I know that also love this genre, The Shining is among the very top of all of our lists. Be well.

Totally! I wonder if the character was based on her. It would be great to expand and do a sequel and use her voice and likeness for Sally's mother or older sister maybe....

Wow, Kubrick sounds like he was really difficult to work with! I can't tell if he's offering criticism or telling you that you've completely ruined the role!

He’s acting up. He deliberately made it hard for shelley to wear her down physically and mentally which sounds horrible but it made her performance more realistic and believable.

@@aidanlynn is that a fact? Or a narrative someone constructed that’s been repeated over and over again?

@@andyscott5277 It's just something that's been repeated over and over again due to her mental state now. People tend to look for answers where none exist. It's sort of like adding 2 + 2 together and getting 5.

@@tl1110 I’ve just never seen any real evidence for it, and I’ve looked extensively, but people repeat this narrative like it’s gospel. Acting like Kubrick doing so many takes was a specific, manipulative act in order to break Shelley, when it’s just his method of filmmaking. Some actors loved it, like Jack, and many would criticize directors who would only do one take. Harvey Keitel hated doing so many takes, which is why he quit Eyes Wide Shut. Shelley’s part was so stressful, and she pushed back a bit, which led to a tense working relationship with Kubrick on set. Which is completely normal on a stressful set where every moment is loss of money and time. People have just blown the whole thing out of proportion, like Kubrick is some Machiavellian, misogynistic soul breaker. It’s frustrating as he’s no longer here to defend himself.
