Absolutely agree! I & many others still don't even get the point... Stephen King himself has said many times her character was *meant* to be STRONG! He wrote her as a strong independent woman! Why the hell Kubrick changed her into a *completely* submissive flower petal is beyond me and King. 🤦

It was interesting to see her express exactly how she felt about him. The cynical look on his face appeared like he got off on giving her hell (being that he could see that his behavior was negatively affecting her). Or he went overboard with his shenanighans so that she could be the nervous wreck that he needed the character to portray in that role.

Wrong. EVERYBODY KNEW what they were signing on for when they agreed to be in a Kubrick Film. Even Nicholson knew. These Actors WANTED the challenge because Kubrick was the greatest Director of the 20th century. Being in a Kubrick Film was a RARE honor that not everybody got, even more so now that he's gone. They were all warned about how difficult it would be, and they chose to go ahead and do the job anyway. You can't blame Kubrick for his personal style of directing. MILLIONS of dollars were on the line and he took it deadly serious.

@@skelter1153ah yes "personal style of directing" justifies abuse... Jack Nicholson and a lot of people have said that he went above and beyond the line with her, no one else was treated to such an extreme, so I'm pretty sure she did not infact know that she signed up for that mate... you can be a fan of the guy and praise his art, hell we all fucking do it's not like he is underground or something! but you also gotta admit that Kubrick had a lot of issues and was a prick to put it lightly. Would his work had been the same if he had been any different? That is something we will never know, probably not! But just like when method actors get way too consumed by their characters the line gets drawn when you make others miserable and fuck with their lives. If not, every so called genius that pops up gets to think they can do whatever they want with others as long as the end result gets them praised, and we have enough of those people already in places far more dangerous than the film industry. Nothing you mentioned gives an argument to justify the original comment being wrong as you said.

It was infront of EVERYONE in the parking lot for 10-15 minutes. Employees, my uncles friends, cars on the street. It’s so heartbreaking to see how her mental health took such a downtown for so many years. It’s so good to see her re-emerging again after so many years. Perhaps she’s been able to see how many people still love her after all this time.

I never realized how beautiful she is. I suppose because he had her in constant misery, and pulling faces that she wouldn't be normally, or speaking normally. If Jack knew he treated her differently, then everyone else did too 😢 I saw a thing that said if someone is a bully towards someone, and nobody does anything about it, then it signals to the person, the bully, and everyone else that it's ok 😢 She was absolutely amazing! She really did deserve an Oscar.

Art should never warrant abuse. It's a fallacy that it is ever required to get 'the best' out of people and such a statement in the routine justification abusers give. Like Michael Jackson's father for instance. Abuse can motivate people to achieve excellence but as a people we should be reinforcing that a person's psychological and physical welfare - spiritual too but not everyone believes in that - trump the creation of art/product EVERY. TIME. Pain is not the same as suffering. He could have used other methods or ways of communicating with her that got an even better performance.

Of course abuse is bad, but I don't think this could be categorized as such and let's not pretend she couldn't have walked away at any moment if she wanted to. No one had a gun to her head or forced her to do anything that she wasn't willing to do. I've seen all the behind-the-scenes clips from the movie and I never saw anything from Kubrick that suggests abusive behavior. Sure, 100+ takes of one scene is rough, but being a perfectionist director who holds high standards from actors doesn't equate with abuse. That's just a tough boss. Directors routinely purposefully fluster actors before a dramatic scene because it often DOES fish out a better performance from them.
