The traditional drums are called Taiko drums. The banjo style instrument is called shamisen and it's not a brush but rather a large pick that fits the whole hand. They also incorporate a traditional flute called shakuhachi and a koto the traditional Japanese zither/harp, and their songs are sung in the traditional kabuki opera vocals. They're the kind of band you have to see live to really appreciate them. Not for playlist, but for an experience.

Beni plays a Tsugaru-style Futozao (Thick Neck Size) Shamisen. The sharp, flashy style of tsugaru was played in the streets by the bousama (blind musicians) who developed a more lively style. Wagakki Band is one of the best Japanese groups out there. They combine traditional Japanese instruments and vocal styles with modern rock, metal, jazz, and more. All eight members are master level musicians; and their lead singer, the very elegant Yuko Suzuhana, is definitely the best female Japanese vocalist I have heard. Wagakki Band is the only other Japanese group tat come anywhere close to BabyMetal in international popularity. The video for their song Senbonzakura has more views than Gimme Chocolate. Wagakki Band is even better live, as their stage shows are musical extravaganzas that rival the very best BabyMetal concerts.

I like how Wagakki Band incorporates traditional Japanese instruments, and I'd like to see more Japanese bands do this, at least for a song or two. The shamisen is like a Japanese banjo, only cooler.
