VIDEO NOTES:
I needed a shelter for my new tractor as well as some other farm equipment before we construct the steel warehouse in a couple months. I mainly wanted something to keep our equipment out of the elements, and one that I could easily set up my security system to monitor until the permanent building is complete.
I did a TON of research and ultimately ended up going with the ShelterLogic roundtop style. I'm very happy with the purchase and overall ease of assembly. I will say that I did hours and hours of research watching different videos, reading customer reviews of the product on every website I could find. This helped me out tremendously, and I thought I'd provide a few tips of my own regarding assembling it by yourself.
Assembling this unit is very doable with one person. I'm 5'2" and had no troubles...it just took longer than it would have with 2-3 people (as they recommend).
I've read and watched A LOT of comments and videos complaining about how terribly the instructions were. I'm thinking maybe ShelterLogic upgraded the instructions because I felt like they were very straightforward and simple to understand. I was VERY impressed with how well all the parts were labeled and identified.
I think one thing that sped up my assembly process is that I cataloged ALL the parts before starting, and kept each pile of parts clearly labeled and separate from each other, so at every step I knew EXACTLY which parts to pull and from where.
I will say that there was one mistake in the instructions that caused me a little bit of time, causing me to double-back and fix. There are 2 different styles of 3" long bolts...regular bolts, and then another style with a rounded top. The rounded top 3" bolts were nowhere to be found in my instructions, so I used the regular 3" bolts throughout the build...then towards the end of rib assembly, found myself running out (even with the extras they included).
I took a wild guess and deduced that the round top bolts were meant to be used for the TOP pieces of the MIDDLE RIBS. The instructions say there should be 4 round top bolts (they actually provided me with 5), so my wild guess is that they were meant to be used for the 4 center rib frame pieces.
So I used all 5 for the front door rib frame and 4 middle rib frames, then a regular bolt on the back door rib frame. After swapping those out, I had enough 3" long bolts to finish assembly.
The only other little obstacle I had was having to file down only 2 of the rods where there were some metal burrs...but I purchased a small metal file and fully expected this based on some old reviews where I read this was a bad issue. Thankfully, not too bad on my rods. All the other rods (except maybe 3-4) slid in very smoothly. The few that didn't, a tap with the mallet did the trick.
I'm so happy with how this turned out that I think I might invest in one more for some of the lighter duty items that I need to store so that even when my steel warehouse is done, I'm not having to give up precious space that would be fine in my ShelterLogic.
Based on the feedback of many about the UV damage after about 12-14 months, I will be putting up a "sacrificial" tarp over top of the shelter to preserve the longevity of the ShelterLogic cover. Once I do that, I'll post a separate video about that. I'll also try to post update videos about how well this lasts over time. I'm located in Western NC, so not a lot of extreme weather, but it will get a lot of exposure to sun during the Summer.
Happy building and I hope some of my tips help others!

Well I am totally impressed! You showed us one person can do this setup. I also have a tractor that I need covered before the snow flies, and this looks like the quickest and most affordable option for me at this time. I appreciate all your tips in there as well.

I'm so glad it was helpful! It definitely would have been easier with at least 2 people, but manageable with one if you can dedicate the extra time. :) If it's going to be in an area without shade, I would highly suggest covering the top with a thick "sacrificial" tarp on top. It doesn't look as clean and nice, but this one was in direct sunlight and the sun definitely wore through faster than I had hoped. The cover started wearing away and splitting due to sun wear in a couple of spots. The most vulnerable spots are the tight high points of the ribbed arches where there is the most tension and the sun wear starts to show as white fabric splitting. I waited too long to put a tarp over this one. I bought a heavy duty tarp and a couple days before I had time to put it on, a BAD wind storm came through split this top behind repair. I had another shelterlogic structure (farm corral top) that was experiencing the same issue, and I purchased a replacement cover for that one and threw it over top of the one that was starting to wear as soon as I noticed it. Now that one is holding up strong much longer than the original since it has a double layer. I know that isn't as feasible with these full garage tents since the replacement cover is so dang expensive, but for the farm corral top that extra layer has helped tremendously.

@@hawkeyegrace Yeah, that's a great idea to get a protective tarp to cover the original. You know they make these things to not last very long so you have to buy another one. I actually thought about using one as a frame to just put OSB board on the sides and metal on the top, but I'm not sure it's heavy duty enough to hold it.

WOW!! That is incredible!! I really was wondering how/if it would survive snow so long as you knock it off right away. Thankfully, we don't get much snow at all here...and when we do, it usually melts within hours. We usually have one light snow per winter...just long enough to enjoy some sledding, but brief enough that we don't have to shovel or plow. Thanks for sharing!!

I have a 14x32 footer with the round top. I am looking to make sure the spine at the length of the peak is on the bottom of the ribs along the entire length. I have had mine for about 10 years and my 3 cover started failing after about 8 months. It’s the cheapest one so now I’m going with the 21 oz pvc version with a 15 year warranty. I’m looking for ideas to improve my base. Gravel wasn’t a great idea. I should have gotten 21AA but now I’m just thinking to pour cement.

You’re so welcome! I hope it helps! I just assembled 4 more shelterlogic shelters (much smaller versions) this past summer as makeshift enclosures for our farm animals. For the price, they do great as temporary shelter. I will say that to update this original video, the original top of this larger shelter did finally deteriorate and we had to cover it with another tarp. It was crazy how rapid it deteriorated because as of the beginning of this summer it was still in good shape! If you have a chance to put a heavy mil “sacrificial tarp” over the top to take the main beating from the sun, I think it will last longer. I ordered a replacement cover which I’ll use the same shell / structure for…but I wish I would have put up the heavy duty tarp sooner. I still can’t complain though…for the price and use we got out of it at its size, I’m still happy. Next time I’ll just be sure to put a tarp over the tap to take the main UV beating first.

@@hawkeyegrace Yes animal shelters a great idea too! I might consider that for next summer, thanks. I'm actually going to reinforce it a bit and cover it with 6mil poly (just vapor barrier) which comes on a 20'x100' roll and last a surprisingly long time. It'll mainly be used as a summer hot house but also extra room for early starts, greens in the fall etc. Hubbies already claimed the cover for firewood but considering their versatility I should probably rethink that 😅...and a sacrificial 2nd tarp in that case is definitely a good idea! 🙂 Thanks again!

Awesome - good luck!! If you’re in an area that gets a lot of sun, I do recommend that you cover it with a large enough heavy duty tarp. They have some silver ones that almost match the color very closely. In the end, my shelterlogic cover lasted just short of a year before the sun wore down some spots that ripped, then the entire thing started splitting. I’m getting ready to assemble a replacement and will definitely do the tarp this time around.

I don’t know if I got a bad one from Menards, but doing mine alone has been a nightmare. The 2 end covers are a good 6” shorter than the cover that goes over the top. The top cover appears to be a good 3-4” to short to cover from end to end making ratcheting it down a pain. Hats off to you doing this on a windy day. A slight breeze blows mine all over making it hard to keep it even. Right now I would never buy another one. I’ve got about 20 hrs into this nightmare. I could damn near build a wood garage in less time.

Oh man, I’m so sorry to hear about the issues! It might be worthwhile to reach out to Shelterlogic customer support to see if they will replace any faulty parts. The tent lasted awhile and I was overall happy with it, but I’m just not thrilled with how quickly parts of the top deteriorate in the sun. I have so many Shelterlogic tents throughout our farm and they’ve been truly worthwhile in helping me get quick livestock shelters up until I have all the permanent structures built, but I just wish the tops lasted longer. I have invested in replacement tops for several of them, but they’re almost the cost of a new kit itself. That would be my only real complaint is to offer the replacement tops at a more reasonable price.

@@zebatrizon1 hey there! Sadly, the original top lasted a little less than a year before the sun damage gave way and split it enough for a strong wind to take it all down. It was great while it lasted, but just didn’t last as long as I had hoped. I have other structures with the same type of material that I did go ahead and buy a replacement too for and doubled up before they were completely worn out. The double layer definitely makes it last a lot longer, but just kind of costly for what you get. I don’t know if I regret it since I got what I needed out of it, but I would think carefully at my use type before getting another one.

another way to prepare the floor maybe rent a roto-tiller Remove all the vegetation Level the ground so all side flow away when finished Then to make the floor hard like concrete Spread like 6 90lb sacks of cement evenly and roto-till it in Water it. Till it again.. then maybe use a vehicle and compact it Leveling it off again Then with a viberplate give it its last smooth compaction.... (do the cement part in one day because the next day it will be like concrete) cemente treated soil

@hawkeyegrace 2 жыл бұрын
I hope it was helpful!! I now purchase that heavy duty ground cover on large bulk since we have crazy gnarly weeds and pasture growth we have to tamp down as we further develop the farm, so the price per square foot is finally much better. I tried some of the less expensive tarps as well and have experimented with less expansive ground cover options. Unfortunately, the crazy growth on our land just pokes right through those. I’ve been super happy with the ground cover material. It doesn’t always work 100% everywhere (for example on our steep roadside, those weeds are insanely resilient), but for the most part it works really, really effectively. It’s especially helpful in long areas over 100’ in length where we’re putting down some road / paths that a tarp doesn’t have as good of coverage on.

@@jamiecreller2464 Ah gotcha. I did raise mine up on concrete pier blocks when I moved it so I could clear the ROPS height on my tractor. I feel like that definitely makes it more vulnerable to the wind. When Hurricane Zeta hit, the residential wind we got inland was crazy. I don’t have mine fully anchored down (just eight 5 gallon buckets filled with TONS of heavy rocks). Zeta winds lifted it off the ground and ultimately moved it a few feet. I was super nervous about losing it (frame bent a little), but in the end it held firm. Once Spring hits, I really need to get it permanently anchored.

Any updates on how the fabric / tarp material has held up?
@hawkeyegrace
@hawkeyegrace 3 жыл бұрын
So far, so good!! It has been BRUTALLY windy since I put it up and taken a beating, and it sits right in the dead hot sun without any shade…so I’d say it has received some of the most brutal treatment and still holding strong! I can definitely see a little bit of wear / weakening from the inside due to the sun exposure, but it’s still holding up much better than I would have thought. I still plan on moving it, so I don’t have it down with the earth anchors. So due to that (and the high winds), it did shift a few times and some of the metal framing has some slight bends, but not enough to damage it badly. I’m currently getting ready to grade and prep the area it’s going to go. Once I have it in its final spot later this year, I plan to anchor it with the earth anchors and throw a heavy duty tarp over the top of it (same dark silver color so it won’t look terribly off). Hopefully they will aid in some of the sun damage I’m starting to see. I’m still VERY happy with this purchase! I’ve since purchased 3 more Shelterlogic structures and couldn’t be happier! 2 are smaller versions of this called “Shed in a box” (10’ x 10’ peak style top from Tractor Supply) to serve as temporary stalls for my farm animals as well as the equine corral top that sits on 12’ x 12’ corral panels. I will definitely be purchasing another corral panel top set because it gives really great height for the 3 sided structure…minimizing the amount of hot air that lingers above (like in the 10’ x 10’ tents. All in all, I think I’ll be a Shelterlogic customer for life. The quality of product you get for the price is just great in my opinion.

@@snowjmanz I did get a tarp to put over top, but unfortunately right before I got the chance to put it on, the top started splitting from the sun wear and then it went really downhill from there. I do have another Shelterlogic of a different style, but has the same type of top. On that one, I actually ordered an exact new top from Shelterlogic as soon as there was a tiny bit of sun wear (but before it split), and that has held up incredible well!! There are just two layers of to on there and it’s great! It’s expensive to buy a new top replacement, but I think well worth the extra life you’ll get out of it.
