Hey Paul, on a side note I just wanted to say I remember what the people in Gander did for my fellow Countrymen 14 years ago today. There wasn't many good things happening that day but the citizens of Newfoundland shined through as one of them. My hats off to you and everyone in your part of Canada. Jake

+Jake S (K-10) We feel the fine people of the USA are very much part of our family. On that awful Sept.11th we too cried and felt the pain you felt and it was an honor to be able to help in any way we could. All the airports on this island did what was done in Gander and life long friends were made during that difficult time so some good came out of it. When it comes to our countries we know you got our back and you know we got yours. God bless and be safe my friend.

Paul I bought a ShelterLogic #62770, 12’ x 24’ x 10 round top shelter a couple of weeks ago. I started assembling it over the weekend and remembered you had put out a two part install video a couple of years back. Before I started I went and found them and watched all the way through. Thank you for your good ideas. I adopted four, taping the rib joints, four angle braces on the corners and using 3/4” pipe on the bottom of the rear panel and at the bottom of the door flap. Still waiting for my plumber Son to bring the 3/4’ pipe over. I like using muffler clamps at the rear. Keep up the good work on the videos.

I am completely convinced our minds function in a similar fashion. I used a piece of 1/2 " conduit on the front and rear of the "Tent". but I do like your idea on attaching the bottom corners with the pipe clamp. I need to move mine to give construction vehicles easier access to the back yard and barn building site. the HF shelter didn't come with any bracing or pipes for the bottom of the flaps .... also like the tape around the joints ... good idea! ... video to come ...really I'm working on it! Once again fun and informative .... aerial trip ... nice! Thanks!

Job well done as always. The chopper ride took it over the top. Pun intended. :-) Looking at your pics on twitter, is that the same manure spreader you did all the welding on before? If it is, it's not going to be long before every weld on it is going to be yours. Maybe that's their logic. They get every weld to be yours and they won't have any more trouble with it. Take care and God Bless. --Today is 9-11, it's been a somber day. I want to "Thank" all of you Canadians for taking care of all the people that had to come down on the flights they were on because of what was going on here in the U.S. at the time. Don't think we didn't/don't appreciate what you all have done. So many people displaced and you all took care of them. Thank You! Levi~~

Paul,Planed Obsolescence. Build them to get people interested and determine where corners can be cut to save manufacturing costs and raise profit, then make the changes. Sell more units and make profit from second generation sales and replacement sales because of the failures that have been planed into them. Sad to say quality is not as important as it used to be. Another fine job and vary good tips. Snow load would be my biggest concern at the top of the unit. Other than that, well done. Hello to Kathy and be safe my friend.

I have the same style. After five years, it's due for a new cover, but that's a fair life. It has 8-36" ground screws, and the sides and back are x'd with cables. The legs sit in doubled up 2"x6"x20' treated boards with holes for the legs drilled in the top board so they don't walk. Mine made it through 96 mph straight line winds. Many other people followed instructions only and lost theirs. "

Great work you two : ) I had my snowmobiles stored in a shed, with a dirt floor. I sold one of the sleds in the fall, and the fella that bought it, got stranded out on the trail... The crank bearing went. I was surprised, as I always looked after my machines, and they didn't have many miles on them, and ran great the season b4. They tore down the engine, found the bad bearing and said it was very corroded. This was apparently from being stored in a shed, with a dirt floor. The moisture comes out of the ground, rises and gets into all kinds of places. Doing damage. Just a thot, as I am about to build one of these for my daily car. I figure I'll throw an old tarp down and just park on it. It should act as a vapor barrier and hopefully slow down any rusting. I hope. : )

Thanks for making the video, guys! Paul, I always love seeing you do things as well as you do, especially in this case your modifications to make things stronger and more functional. And I'm glad you went with the matching gray! My only complaint, of all things, is that the new one is closer to the light pole than the old one! ;-) But hey, that means wasted space, and that was the point of the expansion in the first place. Anyway, thanks again, looking forward to future videos!

+08 Thomas EF Thank you very much. I'm not known to take any short cuts. There are times I wish I could lol. The shelters are the exact distance apart but that light is a little off centre but it was more important to do it that way rather than loose to much space and that light is brutal to relocate so it stayed where it is. Thanks for watching.

After looking at the ribs I got an idea. If you pull the feet inward just a few inches on each side it would rotate the ribs up and align the ribs with the top arch piece into a nice smooth circular top. Maybe the shelter being 6" or so narrower than the previous model is another change they made.
@7863348
@7863348 9 жыл бұрын
+William Nordman Nope they were to tight in the tube. It's really not an issue. There will be no weight stress on the top due to its shape so snow won't stay there. I think the new way of manufacturing the ribs was for easy packaging. I just liked the two peice design of the old one. Cleaner look in my opinion.

ShelterLogic should have an option and have the old construction. What about the snow load on the roof? How will the bad construction on the roof behave? Wrong place to have a joint. Love your videos!
@7863348
@7863348 9 жыл бұрын
+christoffer1973 I highly doubt the newer designed top section will pose a problem. I just liked the cleaner look of less peices. The beauty with the round style roofs is the snow don't build up on them. They are built like an egg. Very strong design. I hated the fact they left the four support struts out so that's why I made four to go back. Thanks for watching and have a safe and happy weekend.
@danburch9989
@danburch9989 8 жыл бұрын
I would have connected the bracing from the vertical support to the bottom horizontal support making a triangular connection. A triangle is 100% rigid; none of the connection points can allow the angles to change. A square or any form of a square with four connections still has some flex at the joints and the shape can change.
@danburch9989
@danburch9989 8 жыл бұрын
+Dan Burch Make that bottom connection at the joint where the adjacent vertical support connects to the horizontal so you don't have to poke another hole in the shelter covering.

The angle braces do make a triangle, the third side is the ground. The bottom of the rib arches are not going to move the way Paul has them anchored.

Thank you for your videos. I have a BX25D . I watch to see what and how you add the extras to your tractor. Also, this summer I purchased a shelter similar to yours. I needed it to house my second Kubota BX, the one used for snow blowing and grass cutting. Now my question....How do the zippers on the ShelterLogic work when it's winter and snow is in the teeth? Thanks for all your time, Paul and Kathy.
@7863348
@7863348 8 жыл бұрын
+featherboard Thank you. As for the zippers. Well I had my ShelterLogic for 3.5 years without any issues until one night I had to remove the tractor during an ice sleet storm for an emegency to help someone out and the zipper was iced up and I made a mess of the zipper. It was my own fault and never had an issue with the zippers even during the worst winter in history a few winters ago. Snow actually don't have any effect on the zippers and if anything snow helps them work good. The main thing to do with these shelters is make sure they are well planted in the ground. The last two days here we are into a wind warning and our shelters are getting hit with winds in excess of 80 kph and I haven't seen winds like it in a long time but they aren't budging so make sure you plant yours to the ground good. They are a great unit but don't take short cuts on the installation.
@featherboard
@featherboard 8 жыл бұрын
+Paul Short Thank you for the speedy and detailed reply. What would you have done differently with the ice issue? My shelter was put up by 2 men in the building industry. It is surrounded by big trees. I live in western central Maine. We get lots of snow and sometimes ice. I looked at your location on Google Maps. One would think an island in the North Atlantic would have more fierce weather than my part of Maine.
@7863348
@7863348 8 жыл бұрын
+featherboard I think our weather is very similar. There are times you folks get even more snow than us. If you have the round top ShelterLogic your good. If you have the standard roof then you'll need to keep a close eye on snow build up on the roof. As for the zipper. That issue was my fault. First time it ever happened. I simply should have waited trying to pull on a zipper that was full of ice. Those zippers are very tough so don't worry about them failing. Some say to lube them using a silicone spray. Some say use wax. I never did that ever and they worked perfectly. Just leave them be if you get an awful ice storm like we did that one time lol. Just as long as your shelter is well planted you'll be ok. :)

Maybe when you removed every piece out of the boxes to see what there was, i thought you said on short pipes there were extra small tubes an those were for bracing. And they didn't crimp them flat. I'm surprised that if the back is staying closed up permanently why no bracing across the back with an x

+Jake Schisler We ended up finding where the four braces went. As for the back what I do is put a pipe through the rear wall and clamp it to each side on the back with muffler clamps and that's where it gets all the strength. I also made up four extra supports for each inside corner. It's very sturdy now and it's seen 110kph winds since its installation and it hasn't budged.

Beautiful shot looking out toward the bay, I know it's a few years newer but it look's different is the material the same MIL i'm sure it is but something look's different. I use Mightycovers.com for my portable covers mainly due to the made my pool cover and its 5 years old and my shelter is only 2, my roof looks like your older shelter but it has 4 extra braces in the middle, my thinking is the less joints you have the stronger it will be, I would voice my opinion maybe they will change it back to the original design and comp you for there stupidity.

Do you worry about your stuff rusting under the plastic shelters? A couple people I know claim you better off without one claiming they trap moisture.
@7863348
@7863348 9 жыл бұрын
+turdsandwicher If you keep the rear and front of them off the ground you get really good air circulation. That being said the old truck is a 1993 model that's been under coated extensively by me myself and there's no rust at all on the vehicle so the shelter will pose no issues to it.

Great coverage of the ShelterLogic install. You've made me decide to stay away from them!!! While it looks good, I don't like the fact they "aren't made like they used to" ....and that's only comparing with a few years ago!

+Trihounds Just the two areas. They left out the four corner struts and they added more connecting points in the round top. The connecting points don't weaken it but leaving out the four corner pipe braces did so that's why you seen me make them in the video. The new shelter do have a better way of holding the pipe together with the steel clamps on each peice so I'm happy with that. Thus unit will last a long time the way it's installed. Thanks for watching.

I had a smaller one of the same type it took to the sky during the sandy storm because my son left the door up so I got a new one the pipe on the new one is smaller and thinner one of the pipe was bent so I called to get a new one and they wanted to charge me $21.00 for one piece I told them it came damaged they made me take photos of it and of the receipt and fax to them to get the replacement part I ask them about the smaller pipe they said they have not changed anything so I took photos of the old and new pipe together and sent it to them and ask them to get back to me about this but they never did so I know what you are saying I will never get a new one again I will pay a little more and put a good one up

+sshorn1 Don't get me wrong. I like these round top shelters but it's imperative you plant them in the ground. Our old one that you see in the video has withstood three tropical storms that took roofs off of buildings yet the shelter never had a scratch. My biggest disappointment was the fact they left out the four support braces which I made myself. You plant any shelter like I have and it will stay put.

Canadian tire has the best prices when they go one sale. Usually twice a year. ShelterLogic is a good company with great customer support. If you need a part they got it and if you need to get a replacement cover they'll sell it to you and good pricing. Just make sure to get it will planted in the ground and it will last a very long time. good luck.
