I have a love-hate relationship with SNP. I have gone on way too busy days and regretted it majorly. I tend to not go places where there are a ton of ppl since I try to go outside to get away from all the noise and relax and enjoy seeing animals and being in nature. Love the park and views but not the # of ppl. Luckily I only saw thru hikers a couple of section hikers on this stretch!

@@RVAHikerGirl agreed - it can be a nightmare to see the popular areas - we go when it is REALLY cold and mostly during the week - and in less than ideal weather circumstances - we are blessed last year with getting to do the very popular Dark Hollow Falls trail and have it all to ourselves. And, we have found the longer the hike, the deeper into the trails that you get - the crowds disappear.

Great minds think alike right! The problem with this section is water. There are 10-12 mile stretches with none in sight so you have to camp where there is water which was at the shelter. And it was full that night all tent sites were taken and any other flat spot was taken. A big sobo bubble that night. Thanks Switchback for watching! ~RVA~

Worried but not worried if that makes sense? I have hiked a lot of miles on and off the AT and I have yet to see a rattlesnake or copperhead on the trail. I have seen a cottonmouth or 2 around water areas in the state. But being way out away from roads and having an encounter is a bit scary. I love snakes but at a distance. I think they are such cool animals. I took a herpetology class in college and I use to hold nonvenomous ones.

Hey RVA Hiker Girl 😊 Great hike and tips along the way. The permit is always a good thing to fill out for all the reasons you shared. Letting family and friends know where you'll be keeps peace of mind for them as well. Whether day hikes, section hikes or thru hiking, communication is key. I live in South Eastern Massachusetts where no bears exist in the woods, but I always find myself saying, Hey Bear! When I hear rustling in the bushes 😁 Thanks for keeping it real and sharing the experiences along the way. ☺️🌲

Yes, with all the recent stuff in the news of people going missing in the outdoors, its seemed like a very appropriate time to mention to tell ppl where you're going to be and what your plan is. I tend to hit my hiking poles against rocks in real rocky sections especially to give the snakes a heads up I am coming through. I have been known to be clapping and singing loudly through the woods a time or 2 to make my presence very known to all the animals around.

Even though I have never seen a rattlesnake in the SNP, I am still terrified of them. I was hiking at South River Falls two years ago and walked down to the stone overlook where two people had just been and almost ran into a Copperhead crawling on the wall. When I ran into the hikers a little later on, they said they had not seen the snake. It was right there in front of them and they did not see it. Scary! That next section is a 12+ mile DRY section so be prepared to carry extra H2O. I still have Thornton Gap to Sawmill Overlook (60 miles) to finish up this fall. Happy Hiking!!!
@RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
I know that dry section is ahead of me for my next one. Not looking forward to it. I tend to carry way more water than I actually need in sections like this making me even heavier. But #nosectionleftbehind I can only imagine how many venomous snakes I have passed unknowingly over the years. I don't even want to think about it LOL! @RVAHikerGirl
@RVAHikerGirl 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but hiking in this area in this National Park is a bit different Kaat because the animals are used to people and aren't scared of them unlike on other parts of the trail. There have been many nuisance bears in the part that associate people with food and won't leave an area even if you shout or make noise. They have to remove bears each yr and relocate them. And the snake population is higher, so it seems in the park. With 2,193 miles of the whole AT I have barely touched the surface of this trail. Who knows if I will ever do the whole thing, but I will certainly have fun trying! Thanks my friend! ~RVA~

Hey, there my SWVA buddy! Glad to hear from ya. I was so mad going the wrong way! Added a whole mile on to the day with .5 out and backtracking. I have never seen a 3-way white blaze intersection. Evidently, there is an AT loop in the area, not shown on Guthooks. I didn't know something like that even existed. I don't know if it was an old AT route or reroute. Alright! Getting back to the BIG miles now that the heat is dying down? Rattlesnakes... ugh. We are supposed to have Timber Rattlers up here, but I have never seen one. they are exceptionally rare. Mountain lions too. They exist, but have yet to see one, and I don't know anyone else that has either. They avoid humans pretty well. Bears are another story, but we live in a place where they're in our neighbourhoods. It's something to respect and keep distance from, but they're so common, I think that takes some of the edge off. Yep, many other snakes rattle their tales to mimic rattlesnakes. But you are right, some don't rattle or don't have enough time to give you the headups that they are there. I try to make a lot of noise and bang on rocks with my hiking poles to let them know I am coming in rocky sections.
