As a stained glass artist I have 1 suggestion for a more stained glass look. Because we can't easily make the background out of one solid piece of glass we will draw the main subject of the piece and then we look at it for glass cutting and add lines that make sense for cutting the pieces. If you were to add lines from the flower or design to the edge of the frame or edge of the coaster in this case, you can add a real stained glass look to the piece like you did to the hexagon shaped one. We do try to avoid putting the cut lines all in one place for strength. In other words it would add a cut line from the center of the edge of a petal rather than where the stem and flower meet. If you have several pieces (sections) for the background glass you can use different color or at least cut out the glass from different areas of the same sheet of glass that may be a bit lighter/darker or have more streaks in the color etc.

If you had looked at the LiaDia Designs you would have noticed she uses paint mixed with gloss varnish. She is able to create gradient with the colors. Also, they will be no fading of the color because it's paint...alcohol inks will fade.
