It’s cold and dark out side and I’m sitting in my comfy home watching this fine Sherlock Homes move. life is good.

I’ve been watching these flicks since I was a young lad! I would stay up late to see them on Saturday night. They began at 11 or 12 o’clock. I was about 12yrs old and I am 63 yrs now. It’s been about 50yrs of catching them whenever see them listed in the guides. I never miss them. Basil IS Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce is the quintessential John Watson. These films are Art!

His voice, Basil Rathbone was perfect, his character, had become Sherlock Holmes.

No only is Basil a brilliant actor but that amazing voice of his

Dark misty fog in cemeteries and pathways. Grey clouds over castles and moors. A perfect atmospheric setting for a Sherlock Holmes mystery story.

A pot of tea, pj's, and a dark room, the only way to see this movie!!

I'm always struck by how timeless these classics are . They haven't lost any of their charm during the passage of time - as crisp and taut as ever . Rathbone and Bruce are food for the soul .

Turned this on for "something in the background" while I work, but was absolutely sucked in. The characters, acting, dialogue and mystery totally absorbed me. An excellent movie that certainly kept me on the edge of my seat as I'm sure it did for audiences in 1939. Amazing how timeless this turned out to be!

One thing I do know. When Nigel Bruce died. Basil rathbone out of respect to he's friend. Never played Sherlock Holmes again.

anyone remember the double bill films on every Saturday back in the 70,s? it was only on Friday & Saturday we were allowed to stay up late. just 1 tele in the house that the whole family sat round to watch, them were the days!!

Greatest Version of this story ever put to film! Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce were and are the best team to ever star in the Conan Doyle film versions! Total classic. ❤

I am 67 now and since I can remember, this is one of my favorites and Basil Rathbone along with Nigel Bruce are Sherlock and Watson no doubt.

Great movies I grew up on...I'm one of the lucky few left probably. These movies will never grow old where there are good, upstanding and courageous men in this world. True men are a rare breed these days...

They had no idea that 80 years after being made these films would still be watched every day and Rathbone and Bruce would be the favourite Holmes and Watson for people into the 21st century... And 51:18 ... that is the opening to "Stairway to Heaven"

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the gift of 19th century. Sir Basil Rathbone and Bruce Nigel the fantastic actors have commemorated these films through their acting skills. Don't believe these movies are 80 years old still gives pleasure and excitement to watch again and again. Thanks to all those who have taken efforts in uploading this golden era of cinema.

There's just so much going for this series---Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the definitive champion duo; the plots are great and never wear out; the music is great and the ambience are unmatched; Black & White is the ONLY medium befitting this Victorian era drama; costumes, witty dialog and minimum violence; no foul brutish language, nor cheap sexual innuendos. Excellent camera work and choice of poses/facial expressions. No wonder I have watched each episode dozens of times---the dramatic effect always gets the endorphins pumping. All this makes for repetitive viewing that never gets old---like listening to 50's/60's/70's R&B, jazz music of the bebop. "cool", and CTI-production eras.

I watched this first as a boy, and was utterly on the edge of my seat. As a country lad, wanderings through the local deserted fields and woods in misty conditions were never the same again! 😬 My favourite episode from my favourite Sherlock Holmes.

So hard to beat the atmosphere in these old classics, it's thick like fog...

Movies back in the day certainly had more 'atmosphere' than movies do today.

Basil Rathbone is the best, these movies bring back such great memories, of me sitting on the floor with my Grandmother, while she drank her tea at the table, as we both were in absolute suspense as we watched these great black & white classics. Priceless times.

Being filmed in black and white actually adds to the special effects and the gloom.

Hands down my favorite version of Hound. Rathbone is perfection as Holmes. Nigel Bruce is less bumbling than usual and more the solid figure he is in the stories. Throw in great character actors like Lionel Atwill and John Carradine-- it doesn't get much better than that.

But I did-some little distance off, but fresh and clear.” Holmes: “Footprints?” Dr Mortimer: “Footprints.” Holmes: “A man’s or a woman’s?” Dr. Mortimer looked strangely at us for an instant, and his voice sank almost to a whisper as he answered. “Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound.." I first read those words when I was 11 years old - needless to say that I did not set the book down until the finish.

Saw this many times as a girl. I just realized, there is no soundtrack! Even the really scary parts, no music. Just goes to show, when done well, you don't need it.

What i miss most, when watching a classic like this, is the crisp, clear English language spoken by all, compared to all the 'innit' shite spoken today.

I would watch these on Sunday afternoon after church alone with my father. Pleasant moments.

This is the best film version of the book. I was 13 when I read it. I read the whole day, and when my mother made me turn off the light at 10PM, I continued reading with a flashlight under my blanket all night long and finished it. The next day was a school day, but I just couldn't put the book down. When I saw this very movie some time later, Sherlock Holmes/Basil Rathbone was exactly how I imagined him reading that book.

When I was in my 9th grade my english teacher made me pick from a pile of books to read for the holidays and I picked this one. It was such an honor to narate the story after the break infront of my classmates.

Reading the different comments, it's comforting to know that there are many of us still who are capable of enjoying and appreciating these films. Of course it always amazes me that they were able to get away with the very last line of "oh Watson, the needle!"

Rathbone & Bruce are clearly the definitive form of Holmes & Watson. No one before or since compares to their portrayal.

This movie was done so many years ago and can hold my attention so firmly. Worth a watch. It's a classic. Good God bless those good ole days.

What a fantastic classic movie.

I'm always amazed at how well the dog/dogs were trained in this film. Those are some intense action scenes and stunts at the end, and they are believable even all these decades later. Hope they got lots of treats

Hound of the Baskerville's is a classic to watch

This is just one of the great classics in style, cinematography, set design, acting and directing..."the Grimpen Mire," Baskerville Hall, the forbidding moor...a great literary work realized wonderfully by the "Greatest Generation"

The Beauty & timelessness of these great classic movies will forever remain an honer to the Talent & Charm of both the performances of Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce.

Basil and Nigel are my favorite Holmes and Watson. They perfectly complement each other.

While rummaging through youtube,I accidentally came across these timeless classics of Sherlock Holmes&Dr.Watson.These black&white films do actually enhance the aura of mystery&thrill that surrounds any Holmes story.Yeah,for me Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are the best actors ever,to have played the roles of the Holmes&Watson respectively.

Rathbone had a great voice and its worth watching these pictures just to hear his authoritative delivery, just as you could sit through any rubbish that James Mason had to perform in.

Love all the Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies. These were made during WW2 and no doubt gave thousands of people a chance to escape the horrors of war and worrying about the future. You noticed in this movie Watson was more serious and competent than in the later movies.

To this day this is the most faithful adaptation of the story of The Hound, I have seen other films of the story but are way off the mark, Basil Rathbone will always be my Sherlock Holmes and I love watching all of the series I know Watson is a bit of a bumbler but that was typical of the day to make someone humorous.

The sets for the outdoors and the nighttime lighting was flawless.

Wonderful. The style of acting is superb. No-one is thinking about their ego. The result is a great focus on the plot and character. Visually a treat. There are brilliant actors now, but these actors, bred on stage, bring a completely different and utterly gripping dynamic to the film.

I’ve been watching these since I was a young boy and they never get old. Great to see it again. Rathbone and Bruce have always been my favorite. Thank you.

I enjoy B.Rathbone s portrayal of S Holmes the best , he is most distinguished not overdone like some others , i also appreciate the feel of the films created in the 40s which appear to add a certain mystery feel.

I was very young when I saw this movie. SO young, it terrified me and caused regular nightmares for years. It wasnt until I read the book as an adult, and learned the ending, that the nightmares stopped. Lol. Going to watch it to the end tonight...

I have the collection of these Rathbone and Bruce films on DVD and never get tired of watching them. Brilliant.

Timeless 80yr old movies I’ve seen and remember all of them

Two of the supporting cast include character actor John Carradine and the handsome Richard Greene, he of Robin Hood (television version) and Forever Amber fame. They demonstrate the depth of the cast and help explain why this version has long remained a favorite. It also doesn't hurt that the script doesn't wander too far from the book and the Dartmoor atmosphere is terrific, considering the time it was made.

Anyone else always so facinated at the beautiful cursive writing in these movies? Even the silent Phantom of the Opera had it. What a job. What do you do? I write the notes that see in movies.

My mom was responsible for my interest in these films. She loved them! Rathbone and Bruce are the ONLY Homes and Watson in my book. They were born to play those roles. Times classics. I love the proper English always used. I can watch these over and over again.

I've been watching these basil rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies for over 53 years I'm 67 now and I still enjoy them.

Well what do you know. Watson actually got one thing right. About Carradine signaling to someone in the distance, with the light of a candle, from the estates window. Amazing.

Of the many versions of The Hounds, this one is superior and timeless. Considering when it was made, the performances and rendition of the story are sterling.

Wow ... what a movie ! Exceptional script, cinematography and camera work. Hats off to Rathbone as SH.

Good movie but they left out details from the book. Also the real mystery is who is Watson? They say he is a doctor but I could read his writing.

There will never be a better adaptation of this story than this one. Incredible.

Richard Greene was an Olympic archer for England and played Robin Hood in a television series back in the 1950.

Another example of the decline in quality (of pretty near everything ? ) that's occurred in the West over the last century. This film is more than eighty years old, but it's vastly better quality entertainment than anything I've seen produced this last twenty years.

It's my 10th standard school book story... Nostalgic..... Love to watch it again and again..........

I have been rotating through the 14 movies with basil and Nigel for the last few months. I watch them over and over again. My ex-wife could only watch a movie one time she refused to watch a movie the second time. I feel sorry for people who think that way. I was born during the million dollar movie you were in New York City where they showed the same film for an entire week twice every night and three times each day on weekends. That was on channel 9 in New York City.
