My girlfriend and I searched fruitlessly for a good film last weekend. We came upon this gem and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great story and cast. Thank you for sharing this. She was just about to put on a Hallmark movie. Saved me from an excruciating evening.

Has held up incredibly well. My kids are getting into murder mysteries and wanted to see a classic, but I wasn't sure how a 78 year old film made before my own father was born would go. It was a big hit, scary, funny, and thrilling. There are films from five years ago that haven't aged this well.

I've seen the series. I suppose the most recent version of the story, on BBC-first, couple of years ago. It was done in the most horrific way. Not gory or something, on the contrary. But the feeling of dread through that whole series. Of course I do know the whole Ten Little Niggers story behind it, which was changed into Ten Little Soldiers and then into And then there were none. If I'm not mistaken. Good to see that sometimes political correctness is important. I'm 60, and when I think about some things I wrote in other girls poetry albums...aweful. Without realising that, of course. I'm gonna give this version a go!!

"Everyone has to eat a peck of dirt before he dies." My dad said this quote to me when I was 6 or 7yrs old. I took it the wrong way - I didn't want to die too soon so I became a clean freak, for life. Now that I am seventy, I have to laugh at that little girl. Many times I have wanted to share it with him, but he died of cancer when I was nine. Thank you for sharing all of these great oldies.

I have learned that if you keep everything sterile then you often get sick more than others because you are not used to germs. My dad never cared about cleaning and the only time his home was clean was when I visited him with years in between and the man was never sick not even a cold or headache and though he has smoked 40 cigarets most of his life and he drank a lot the man is still alive and 83 years old. Now for the last few years he has had home helpers who comes and cleans his home for him:) But let me say he walked to and from work every day and it was a long walk and would go for rides on his bicycle and was always a skinny man. I think all that fresh air he got did him good and using his body. He is now almost blind and still goes out on his handicap 3 wheeler and stays out 3 hours every time.

Hard to believe that this film was made just over 80 years ago, yet it still maintains its brilliant story-line of horror and humour. I have seen this before, a few times in fact, but I still enjoy it, even though I know the outcome. Excellent casting as well. Incredible that it's been kept in as pristine condition as possible for its age.

Going Seventeen brought me here because a lot of CARATs commented this and I thought I wouldn't like it since it's black and white but... I'm more contented. The way they act is so natural. Old movies are great. And the story too is great.

The scene where the guy is eaves dropping through the keyhole, then the rest of the cast eaves drops on him. That is brilliant!! That was incredible camera work and set up!! Bravo!! That scene itself deserves an Academy Award. It's brilliant

@Finister Foul: That reminds me of the movie based on Clue, I think; or it might have been Murder by Death, both comedies anyway. Half of the cast are in one room and the rest in the entrance hall outside. Something happens in the room and the people shriek and run to the door. The people in the hall hear them yelling and run to the door. The ones in the room are pounding and yelling, “Let us out! Let us out!” And the people in the hall are pounding and yelling “Let us in! Let us in!” It was one of the most hysterical scenes I’ve seen.

This is a charming rendition. It does change it to a happy ending and making several of the people not guilty unlike the book, but it does have Christie's cleverness.

It's based on the stage version, which Christie also wrote. She usually changed something when she adapted her work for the stage, so that even the people who had read the book would be surprised.

@@yoduk4588 Yes, thanks, was wondering about that. This alternate ending shows what the original does not - the flaws in vigilante justice. They get it wrong sometimes. And more often than official justice, with its safeguards that lessen (not eliminate) the chance of a mistake.

@@maggiesmith856 In particular, she changed the ending for this stage adaptation because it was premiered in World War 2. London was getting bombarded nightly by the Germans, with people being killed every night. Christie wisely decided that her audiences wouldn't want a downbeat ending.

For anyone who might be interested, I’ve reconstructed the voting beginning at 41:58 from the clues that are revealed prior to the voting so that it is possible to know who exactly voted for who. Everyone received at least one vote except for Miss Claythorne, her name was the only name “never mentioned.” Rogers alone received two votes. (I will save the identity of the two who voted for him last). Miss Brent definitely did not vote for Mr. Blore. She considered it, but then convinced herself that it was not him. Instead, I think she probably voted for Lombard being the killer. Rogers voted for Mr. Blore. (Process of elimination. All other voters can be reasonably accounted for). Vera Claythorne definitely voted for Dr. Armstrong. She told Lombard that she suspected him earlier. Dr. Armstrong definitely voted for Miss Brent. It is strongly implied by the affirmative shaking of his head when whispering to the judge. The judge did not vote for Miss Brent. Lombard definitely voted for the Judge being the killer. He explained as much to Vera. Dr. Armstrong did not vote for Rogers. But he was correct when he said that whoever suspected Rogers of being the killer would not drink the cocktails he made. Rogers drinks the cocktails of Blore (who made his suspicion of Rogers clear earlier) and the judge, the only ones not touched.

Once it was understood that everyone was invited under false pretenses and were being hunted, why did Rogers continue on in his role as butler? He wasn't beholden to an employer anymore.

@@renzo6490 It is because he was forced to obey the social class rules from birth. The sad fact is that if you come from a poor family, and your father was a butler, they teach you that your life duty is to provide for your employer. It works the other way around as well. Most of the guest were murdered, because they believe in the rigid British class system - They didn't believe that a person who is a judge - a most respectable profession - could ever be a murderer. That is Christie's whole idea - If Rogers hadn't been forced to act on his role as a lower-class servant, he wouldn't have been murdered so easily.

Guess that he must have broken in & because Rogers who never drank must (having downed everyone's glass and more later) have fallen into an extremely deep slumber and never heard the noise.

God made a perfect world for us but gave us free will to love and obey our Father or rebel. We rebelled and the consequences are a judgement day to settle our accounts one day. ie. death. so cuses and problems in the world are our fault not Gods. But the people at the studio who determined how the film would end allowed the two romantic leads to survive....Agatha Christie killed them all off. Since this is the most successful of her novels in terms of sales and is one of the best selling books ever published with 100 million copies sold, you’d think they would have used her ending which is far superior to this. But no! 100 million people couldn’t be right!

@@voraciousreader3341 they always interfere with the plot. I have never read and love a book which remains untouched as a script. Personally I hate it. There' is a modern BBC I think production in which the development is closer to the book. That's why, Agatha killed Poirot and gave strict instructions to be published only after her death.

It's based on Christie's play adaptation in which the two leads survived. This was based on the play and not the novel. Russians did an adaptation based on the novel.

The novel is darker and in my opinion is AChristie's best murder mystery. on the other hand this movie is lighter, and the ending is different from the book but still an excellent movie, the actors, the screennwriting, the photography everything about is is just brilliant. Loved it!

I watched this movie with my mom when I was a kid. It was the late late show feature and I fell asleep. Next day, my mom told me the rest of the story and told it so vividly that I felt I had actually seen the rest of the movie. Her describing it to me has stayed with me all these years. She was a great storyteller.

Love this movie, I was a teenager when I first watched it. I’m 65 and have always been a fan of Barry Fitzgerald but my admiration for Walter Houston grows! Sierra Madre and Dodsworth. Also great films!

Fell in love with Agatha Christie by way of this movie when I was young. It was back when I had two channels for tv and a bored time on summer vacation. What a famous cast and their best character acting.

This version, although not completely faithful to the book, is really good. The actors are great and the pacing is perfect. One of the big changes that this film made was the ending, which is altered from the books ending. They chose to go with a happy ending. But in 1945, I doubt test audiences wanted to see a story with a bleak ending where everyone dies.

@@donniscampbell7101 : It was so awful I wanted my money back. Horribly miscast. Johnny Depp is past his prime. Kenneth Branagh was a ridiculous as Poirot. The list goes on. At least Dame Judy did her usual outstanding job. But It was just terrible. All that $ for nothing.

Very few films have ever mixed humor and mystery so effectively. This movie which I saw on the Late Late Show, made me an Agatha Christie fan for life. Damn, she was clever!

I believe I have seen every version of this novel by every title, and this is by far the best. It has more elements of humor to break up the really frightening atmosphere. Superb performances by everyone in the cast.

This version really gets on with the tale. Precious little exposition. Fast pace. That's both good and bad. The novel has infinitely more detail, leading some film versions to get bogged down in it. OTOH, this version simply didn't engender fear - or much emotion of any sort. It was so terse, and we were whipped so quickly from place to place, that I was largely unable to suspend disbelief.

The judge was suitably sinister from the start, but really priceless was the butler in his performance of drunkenness and offended dignity: "How can I be accused of murdering anybody who has not left me any money!"

Fun movie. Richard Haydn who played the butler in this film also played the nosey neighbor in 'Sitting Pretty with Clifton Webb. Also, Judith Anderson played the wife of Walter Houston in The Barbara Stanwyck film the 'Furies'. Excellent cast all around. Thanks for the fun movie. I have not seen it in years.

J's Mom: This movie is classically wonderful. New movies have no class or mystery, let alone acting! I intend to search for even more of these black and white mysteries with the writing, actors, direction, etc that make these charming movies. I just saw this for the first time ever yesterday,and I love it!I had to re watch it a few times to really understand a few things,and to get just how brilliant of a film it really is!Great actors!I think the one person in this film who really rubbed me the wrong way and deserved what she got was the witch who sent her nephew to a reformatory and he hanged himself!She just was acted so aloof,so cold, like she had nothing to do with his death,and just didn't care at all!What a witch,I was glad when she got hers!

I love this movie and have seen it many times, but one thing that always crosses my mind is the impeccable timing and pre-knowledge of where the victims would be in order to accomplish the murders. I.E. the stone decoration falling from atop the house with a victim standing directly beneath. Some things you just have to let go.

This was filmed on Burgh Island, which lies 270 yards off the South Devon coast at Bigbury on Sea. The island is accessible at low tide across a causeway and by sea tractor at high tide. The house became an hotel in the 1930s, and having fallen into disrepair has since been restored as an art deco hotel. It isn't cheap though...

The original island in the book was also off the South Devon coast. I expect Dame Agatha must have had Burgh Island in mind when writing the book. She could hardly be referring to the Mewstone, haha. Or Drake's Island!

This movie was actually filmed at Goldwyn Studios in West Hollywood. The stock footage is of Burgh Island.

@@rachellee.9389 For practical reasons, they would have had to film within a studio on a sound-stage, using a mock-up of the house-interior so that cameras, lighting- and sound-equipment and the production-crew could best record the action. A real house would have been impossible to film in with the bulky equipment available 70-odd years ago.

This is the greatest "who done it" mystery. I have watched it dozens of times. I’ve looked for the clues. It’s an honest story. The key to solving it is pay attention to every detail., and trust the story.... even knowing the solution, it’s a fabulous mystery. I bet you can’t solve it!!!

This was the very first Agatha Christie book I ever read, during a family holiday in Portugal in 1968. It kept me absolutely spellbound and of course I had no idea whatsoever who dunnit (one doesn't at that age!) Yes, it's an honest mystery and as always, all the clues are given faithfully by Dame Agatha. But I do think they ought to do a remake of this film. I don't think this one is very good.

@@renzo6490 When you watch the whole movie you think to yourself, "OF COURSE IT WAS THE JUDGE" - The whole Mr. Owen recording played like the beginning of a trial. Who else could it have been?!
