Man, I forgot how much Doyle loved "Part 2: The explanation as a lengthy flashback". That's at least three stories if I recall, two of which are in the US?

Haha it's something I'm rediscovering too as I read these again! Certainly three of his four novels use that device, and a few short stories use it too. In a way it's worse when you read them in chronological order - the stories that use that device of "dark criminal backstory in another country" are mostly set in the first few years of Watson and Holmes' career. Weirdly most of them seem to take place in America...

Haven’t read it yet but apparently the Sign of Four is the other novel that has the flashback. It involves a group of corrections officers at prison in an island chain in India. I was reading about it and apparently the prison in the novel is real and is a museum today.

The scottish accent threw me off (as a non native I still have some problems) and surprised me plenty. Glorious, lots of effort that unfortunately is underrated.
