Hailed as the most faithfully filmed adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary characters. This acclaimed series stars Ronald Howard as the world-famous sleuth and H. Marion Crawford in a different portrayal of Dr. Watson than usual.
THE CASE OF THE SHY BALLERINA: Dr. Watson investigates the murder of Harry Chelton after the two get their hats and coats mixed up at the club. Mrs. Chelton advises Holmes that her husband, a composer, was being blackmailed by a Russian ballerina who's performing in London. Stars Nathalie Schafer (aka Mrs. Lovey Howell from Gilligan's Island)

@@elizabethschaeffer9543 Yes ! Compared with the movie Baskervilles the scene of Holmes DISGUISED ON THE MOOR approaching Watson among the stone Ruins had a humor and pleasantry that seems to prevail in this series. I feel I am at home when I am interacting with intelligence.

I have watched several adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, and I have only really loved Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. I was not prepared to love Ronald Howard as Holmes, and H. Marion Crawford as Dr. Watson in this adaptation, but I have now watched a dozen of these lovely little tidbits one after the other this evening, and I have to say I love them, too. Thank you so much for finding these. Oh, and the guy who played Sergei is a hoot!

Sergei played the "blind man" in Blind Man's Bluff. Since "Mrs. Howell" was in this one, it would've been great if say, Alan Hale, Jr. (Skipper) was in this episode too. He did a pretty good job of playing a British police officer in one of Gilligan's dream sequences. 😃 These are great episodes. So glad I came across them.

At 3:48 Holmes tells Watson, as they discuss the mix-up over Watson's hat: "Well, don't worry about it, *_Holmes._* The cloakroom attendant at the club..." But, dash it, chaps! He _is_ Holmes, surely! It seems that, for a moment, Ronald Howard forgot which character he was playing.

Oil lamps, fireplaces, using fire, theses something I love about that, my grandfather in the 1960's used oil lamps and fireplaces for heating, we'd go there often and I'd go to the wood pile and get chopped firewood and sit in front of the fireplace, new logs would snap and pop when the started burning, the sound, the smell, it was cozy.

As a violinist, Holmes's hold of the violin nearly made me spit my coffee. I nearly died. Why was it held so vertically by his ear when it needs to be flat. And not to mention the bowing. At least they hid it with the sheet music.

These really are fun - awful over-acting, stock caricatures, stilted scripts, cast members turning up as different characters in different episodes and dreadful jokes. Brilliant!

thomas miles I’ve just had a thought that the acting was directed on purpose to be over the top.

Most of these actors were from the stage. Television was still relatively new. They were still projecting as if they were on stage.

An unbelivable case with a troubled Dr Watson's mix up cap being evidence cleverly investigated by Holmes with interpretation of handwriting and logic .

It is so hard to tolerate This Dr. Watson personna. Why would they want him to act like a drop out spoiled clueless loser, when he is supposed to be a graduate from college, in a war, wounded and in the thrall of many murders with Sherlock? bah

I AGREE wholeheartedly And this episode isn't even the worst. It's terrible that they made him do that.

shirley savitts......just as Lee Takamiya stated! How did you forget to mention the most important?! A Medical Doctor and not just ''supposed to be''...He is! Anyone could have been in a war, in those days...wounded..most likely . ''In the thrall''? your reasons are less than... You might be thinking of the other Watson.....who is such a ''clueless'' buffoon. But, this Watson is not a loser or ''spoiled''...hmm...how did you come up with that one? What makes him appear spoiled to you?

I can understand being attached to your favorite hat and not liking to wear anyone else's, but doesn't Watson have at least one more hat to use in the meantime? It is nearly like only having one pair of shoes.

lol that's because they use the same actors, repertory style to use a group of actors again and again doing all parts, and the tashes are convenient for making people look different, especially when the lestrade actor is recycled as random scottish characters
