Hello,
This is a review of the Sherpa 100AC Power Bank from Goal Zero. The powerbank has proven to be a reliable source of USB C power, but it has one major shortcoming! Check out the video to find out more.

Well done! I wish more reviewers were as objective as you. For so many of these devices the reviewers get them from Jackery, Bluetti, etc. and magically everything is wonderful.

Hahaha... thanks! I've struggled with that too, and I take most things on here with a grain of salt. Typically I look for: 1) A channel that isn't eligible for monetization - less than 1k Subs (since the views won't pay for the equipment) 2) And Isn't sponsored by any brands. This will ensure the user bought the gear with the intention to own, not the intention to show it off.

Wow, I didn't think about using the older sherpa for a car power bank, thanks. That is a good idea.

Hi. please forgive me if my question is too basic, but does this concept of modified sine and pure sine wave also apply to USB-C ports or just AC outlets? I am asking, because watching your video I will stop charging my laptop on the AC outlet, so I wanted to know if there is any problem in continuing to charge my laptop on the USB-C ports. Thank you very much and excellent video.

I understand what your concerns are with the AC side of the device, however, for anyone using an external AC/DC converter for a device, i.e. a laptop, etc... the AC/DC converter is going to cleanup the power during the transition. It is a bummer that they only included a modified sine wave harbor fright tools quality inverter on the device. However, that AC port, could deliver the goods when you least expect it.

@@harrisonhobbies241 what do you think of the Omnicharge Ultimate?
@harrisonhobbies241
@harrisonhobbies241 3 жыл бұрын
I was actually considering that when i got this. The swappable battery on the Omi seems like a bit of a gimmick, and i went with the Goal Zero because it would work with my panes. And i suspect its AC output is also modified sine wave - so i think they are pretty equal in cool factor, just with different feature sets.

@@harrisonhobbies241 Thank you for the response. I’m currently debating if I should go with the Goal Zero or the Omnicharge. I’m moving towards the Omnicharge more for the removable battery. Mainly since I would be able to swap the battery out when the old battery ages and won’t hold charges anymore. It’s a tough call..

I have a MacBook Air 13". Could the Sherpa 100AC charge a laptop while in use?
@harrisonhobbies241

Absolutely. I believe that computer is around 45 watts, and this will put out 60, so lots of headroom. I've run a 120 watt Dell Precision and a 65 watt Dell Inspiron off PD, and it can charge those too. The Precision was draining its own battery to supplement power, however.

Can the ac power a nintendo switch and 24 inch computer monitor at the same time ? I legit just got this for use with the switch and wii Found it at a pawn shop and after weeks of it not selling I bought it once they dropped the price to $65

It figures that the only review a actually showing someone plug something with three prongs into it would trash it for having it lol. I don't agree, having the option to plug in different things is always better than not. Too bad about the sine wave thing though.

Do you by chance notice a faint buzzing sound coming from the inverter (after it has been turned on)...? ...and the buzzing sound gets louder when a load is put on it (e.g., a laptop power brick)?
@harrisonhobbies241
@harrisonhobbies241 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. it's a dirty circuit. What you're hearing is 60 Hz power with a square wave form, and is especially common on square wave units. Basically, you've got some capacitors that charge up and dump 60 times per second.

whats the purpose off having the ac passthrough if i could connect it directly to the AC?

@@harrisonhobbies241 hello, the unit has power passthrough meaning you can charge the unit while making use of the AC outlet, atleast thats how i understand it.
@harrisonhobbies241

@@javilo2797 Ah - I understand what you mean now. Yes, your understanding is correct. A bit more information related to how I've used it: It doesn't have an actual AC-in. It has 12-20V in for solar (and this is where a wall charger would plug in too). This pass-through is logical if running solar since you may want to convert that power and use it immediately. Using this with an AC input doesn't make much sense though, unless you intent to use it as a UPS. This can also have DC-in from a car or bank of batteries, so you can use it as an AC inverter (while also charging) It also has PD in which is nice since you can attach up to 2 power banks and effectively increase its battery capacity - for example, 2 lower-cost 60-watt power banks running it concurrently will keep up with the AC output, and can double or triple the capacity. You can also use a 60-watt PD car charger to keep it going longer. Hopefully this gives a bit of insight into the various options where the pass-through makes sense.

Hi John! If you're interested in the Goal Zero brand, then any of their larger Yeti models that DO have a sine wave inverter. RavPower is also a good brand to consider as they make larger AC power banks with sine wave inverters.

@@harrisonhobbies241 thanks, I have a yeti 1000, I'm looking for a small unit for travel. The ac plug seemed cool but I most likely won't use it much. So I think I'll go with the smaller goal zero or the Omni.

Shame on goal zero for including such a shitty quality output inverter I agree it's a major con. With that said, a device like this isn't really designed for powering things with motors. However goal zero markets the inverter as if it could. Goal zero screwed up IMO, and you did a good job of pointing this out. For a few bucks more Goal Zero could have made a better product but instead chased profits. It appears their new version isn't any better
