You think I play too slow ? Wait for it...
Possibly the hardest tunes I've ever played on nyckelharpa, a tempo at least. These jumps and crossed fingerings are madness. LOTS of practice - and hours of bad takes for one good video. But oh so much fun and satisfaction in the end ! Hope you like it.
- Da Boys O' Da Lounge composed by Garden Johnston, transmitted by Kevin Henderson.
- Janine's Reel composed by Jim Sutherland, learned from the Tübingen Ethno folkies.
This video is part of the World Nyckelharpa Day 2022 challenge of playing tunes from other instruments' repertoires on nyckelharpa.
World Nyckelharpa Day website worldnyckelharpaday.com/
Nyckelharpa built by Jean-Claude Condi (FR) with an extended "Billy" keyboard making these tunes possible on the instrument, no doubt.
Bow by GEWA from Thomann webshop.
The fiddle in the middle in the background is a Swedish låtfiol • Låtfiol Tinkering & So...
I'm Emelie Waldken, I play nyckelharpa and fiddle and I teach folk dancing.

I defy anybody to hear a Reel played well (as you have here), and not tap their feet to it! When I need something to get me moving on a sluggish day, I will come back to this 🙂

I got to visit Dunoon, Scotland back in the late 70's and early 80's when I was in the Navy and would have liked to have listened to the Nyckelharpa while there, but alas....

Not sure of the origans of these tunes but what I can tell you is that they are widely played in Irish traditional music circles. Really well played.

Great tunes and nicely played. I’ve never complained about speed and never will. If a tune is good it will sound good played slow or fast. I listened yesterday with my lovely 4 year old daughter bouncing around then it was over and an old recording of yours came up. I think it was the first of your recordings I had listened too. Tam Lin was the last tune.

This is a masterful performance! I'd love to hear you play this music as a duet with a fiddle, including both melody played in unison and harmonies.

@@EmelieWaldken ahhhhh ceci explique cela !

It is my understanding that the origin of this instrument's name was because Harpo never had a nickel to his name, but then again I might be mistaken.
