Clearly I missed the opportunity to be a bit more accurate by choosing biome-specific food items, but oh well. This video is less about perfect accuracy and more about having fun while learning about the philosophy of use for different shield types. I was just trying to have some fun while testing out some shields and showing them off. I’ll try to be better next time!

Actualy food type impact block. Even bad shield will get high boost with high end food.

Great video, but you misunderstand the parry bonus, in the video you say it dictates how much damage you do, but what it actually effects is how much more damage you can absorb when you parry Think of it like this: the carapace shield blocks about 120 damage with a 1.5x parry bonus, this would mean it can block up to 180 damage when you parry with it. The carapace buckler blocks around 100 damage with a 2.5x parry bonus, meaning it would be able to parry up to 250 damage with it The way that the parry works in valheim is that when you parry, it just staggers the enemy, just like if you were to hit them with a powerful blow. So it's always going to be roughly a 2x damage multiplier when the enemy staggers, whether it be from a parry, or powerful attacks hope this helps, and keep up the good stuff
@WafflesGamesProbably

Ahhh! It looks like you’re right! I definitely misunderstood! It’s more complex than I thought, but yes indeed, parry bonus doesn’t directly correlate to damage dealt to staggered enemies. It just adds to the math for the potential to stagger, and staggered enemies take 2x damage. That’s cool! Thanks for pointing it out!

I really enjoyed watching this video. I have hundreds of hours in this game, but I still feel like I learn something new every time I watch a different video. Whether it’s building, food, or in this case, shields. Thank you for taking the time to put this together and I appreciate your many sacrifices (And deaths) within the game!

Haha thank you so much! I feel like I’m getting better the more I fight various enemies and with different armaments, and I definitely am, but sometimes I just suck. But hey it makes it fun! None of that was staged at all. I kinda just fought the enemies I felt like fighting in the moment, or unintentionally spawned.

I think this test requires food of the area level as well as i believe total max hp affects blocking alot. The block bar taken is not representative, i believe there is a formula for this online regardong max hp and block.

Still playing Valheim and loving it too, man 😁 Thank you for the tutorials on each shield and the other weapons I'm working on full silver armor, but I forgot to just get a shield to start since it'll be easier lol. Then you mentioned the serpent tower shield - now I definitely gotta get that one lol

Just a note for the serpent tower shield: it also has a bonus to Pierce, I wanna say 15%? This makes it pretty viable in the Plains against Deathsquitos and the spear fulings.

It simply adds resistance when blocking pierce attacks. Resistance is 50%. This makes it better than the Black Metal Tower Shield against seekers when they use their stab attacks.

Amusing vid (as always to be fair), slight shame you didn't use food for the biome you were testing in too, but can't blame the oversight, you just get so used to your current tier foods that it likely didn't occur. Your health and stamina totals are used in the stagger/parry metrics though, so it's possible you didn't get the full experience for this comparison. My main takeaway from this is the obvious lack of a silver-era buckler and mistlands era tower shield though, hadn't really occurred to me before since I also tend towards roundshields since I also like the balanced options they offer, but those two options are conspicuous by their absence, for sure.
@WafflesGamesProbably
@WafflesGamesProbably Жыл бұрын
Haha yeah thanks! It seems everyone noticed the food situation. Oops. Oh well. It’s mostly just a fun showcase of these weapons vs a scientific analysis. But I just wanted to give the enemies at least kind of a chance to do some damage to me, which is why I put on biome-respective armor and weapons. Seems they didn’t need much chance. Haha! I’m also learning that my parry bonus knowledge was a bit off!

An interesting test would be to see how well shields perform against creatures from the next biome, the bronze buckler for example is often all that stands between you and whatever the swamp is throwing at you when you first get there, including draugr elites and ofc abominations.
@WafflesGamesProbably
@WafflesGamesProbably Жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that! I may just abstain from the bronze buckler to save resources and make the banded iron shield asap. But we will see. It may be a terrible idea. I’ll have to compare stats.
@Dakkalistic
@Dakkalistic Жыл бұрын
@@WafflesGamesProbably I was thinking about that one in particular because i'm thinking about a swamp-base first playthrough, but ofc there's other examples, like you won't have black metal wares when you hear the first fuling cackle. As for that swamp situation, it's really about being able to farm abominations fast for root armor, bit i digress...

Oh for sure. You can completely ignore the “parryability” accuracy in this video, as the foods I unconsciously chose kinda ruin it. But it’s still a fun video and I still struggle despite high tier foods.

Great video, from the test runs you did in this, I think you did point out some specific uses/strategies for the different shield types quite well. Likewise, since bosses cannot be parried, seems to me that best shield for that purpose would be the tower types for pure damage absorption with benefit of bouncing you back out of the way of follow on attacks. for general exploring tho I concur with your assessment that round shields and bucklers might be best. Thanks for making this.

I am really enjoying your content after finding you a few days ago. I haven't found too many Valheim content creators I really enjoy watching outside of info content. I too am really not a fan of the look of the black metal shields, when I first got them I almost decided to go without because the clashing color scheme and weird look after the glory of the silver set look. What are you looking forward to the most with this surprise update they just dropped in testing? I am stoked for the new settings options and snap point selections when building. I went back to watch this again, because I wanted to see if I could tell why you didn’t test Yagluth. It seems like if you die, the monster destroyers everything thing? Would you be able to make an arena that was indestructible? I would love to see the timing on Yagluth and how to defeat the scary beast, in an arena and not the actual scary battle.

Id wish, they brought the scale shield and abyssal razor back with upgrade versions as they are not biom mats specific. Maybe as a set. Shield, new kind of serpent armour und abyssal spear or something and the razor with a new sneak armour for a bigger sneak damage bonus, but less dmg overall. Something like that

I thought the parry bonus affected the amount of damage blocked rather than the damage bonus to enemies. Pretty sure parrying, regardless of type, just staggers enemies and dealing damage to staggered enemies is always the same bonus.

I noticed that you've eaten some end game food for this video and I want to quickly mention that you're much less likely to get staggered by a hit due to that high HP because the stagger mechanic is based off your max HP.
@WafflesGamesProbably
@WafflesGamesProbably Жыл бұрын
Oh for sure. It’s certainly not perfect. But I didn’t think about biome food until I was already into it. Oh well. Consider the video more about the philosophy and functionality of shields vs their actual abilities to block and parry respective enemies. They’ll pretty much all handle that with the right item levels and skill levels.
