I have a 2016 fusion and I been having a transmission in park issue it to ford could not fix issue. independent mechanic had rebuilt the granny. Now I’m back with this message with hard shift and it runs in a limo mode. Any advice ?

@@RL_Repairs310 I’d start diagnosis by pulling all the codes out of it. Hopefully that will point in a direction to start diagnosis.

@@CarShopTalk They just ran diagnostics and told us the code they got required the transmission to be replaced to be corrected.

@@CarShopTalk Do you have an idea of what other issue the problem may be? I inspected the shifter bushing and it is still connected. The plastic bushing itself also looks to be in good shape

@@TheMissluckygirl They’ve opened up recalls on quite a few vehicles for this issue since that video was made. You might call the nearest dealership and see if it’s covered.

@@CarShopTalk I actually did just that before I seen yr comment because I had to go to dealership to get the parts , they said no recall on my 2020 but it was an easy fix my husband did it in 20 mins , it's working like a charm

I had this happen to my Fusion yesterday. My local AutoZone had the correct bushing in stock. I was able to fix it without too much of a problem.

Cable is out of adjustment now is the only thing I can think of. If they pull codes hopefully it will verify that or at least point to the problem.

You should be able to rotate the shift arm on the transmission to line it up.

If the bushing is off / gone, yes, I think that will fix your problem.

I am having the same issue as you. I inspected my shifter cable bushing and it is all intact. Not loose or anything. The plastic bushing itself looks to be in good shape, no visible cracks or anything. I was hoping replacing the bushing would solve the problem but mine seems to be something else. Were you able to figure out what your issue was??

It’s an obdlink mx+. Yes, it talks to all the modules on multiple networks through the obd2 connector.

Do you know if any of the cheaper models that work with forscan will let you pull the codes on the transmission?

@@danielstephens4420 I think any of them would pull transmission codes / display transmission pids. It’s controlled by the PCM. Probably not for the gear shift module tho, it’s on a different network.

Usually if the problem is fixed the wrench will go out by itself in 3 or 4 drives.

@@CarShopTalk Wrench light went away when I hooked up a regular obd2 scanner before installing the new shift module... but it said no codes found. Kinda weird. Swapped out the shift module today. So far so good but the problem of it not going into drive at random times is so spotty more driving is required. Thanks for all your help. Definitely gonna buy that Forscan stuff soon.

@@danielstephens4420 That is weird. It sounds like somehow it cleared the codes when you plugged into it. Hopefully you have it fixed.

2020 Escape is shift by wire, it doesn’t have a shift cable.

I wish I could say it wasn’t a common problem, but……. At least it’s an easy fix.

The only time it matters if it’s connected is when shifting. And yes if it doesn’t shift into park it’s a roll hazard. Assuming the parking brakes work they can by used if parking and the transmission doesn’t engage park. If shifting to reverse or drive and it comes off before it achieves the selected gear it’s not good, but it should tell you in the message center and you’ll have to put the cable physically back on. If you put it back on, shift to drive, and the transmission makes it to drive it should be fine until you park and then it’s a roll of the dice if it will stay on to shift to park. If I was 3 hours from home I would definitely put it back on and drive home.

I would argue the diagnostic charge if you told them what was wrong with it and just asked for the bushing to be replaced. Ford warranty paid 0.6 hours on the recall on 2013-16 Fusions 19S16 and 22S43. Warranty is usually a little short on time, probably more like 0.8 hours at what ever the shop rate is.

@@CarShopTalk I greatly appreciated your quick reply! When I went to pick up my car from the dealership yesterday I was billed almost $400! For the bushing install it was $165 labor + $5 for the bushing (labor hourly wasn’t shown on the invoice but seems like I was billed more than 0.8 hrs) + $185 for unnecessary diagnosis + $18 fee for supplies/hazard disposal and almost $30 tax. I asked the service writer why I pm still being billed the diagnosis when I told her on the phone that I needed a new bushing. She initially tried to say that I didn’t say that on the phone but then I directly quoted what I said on the phone and quoted her response back to her which was “well it could be that but it could also be (all these other issues she rattled off)” and she didn’t have a response after I said that. Bottom line is she said her manager had already left since it was almost 5pm and she didn’t have the authority to remove the diagnosis fee so I’m going to talk to the manager on Monday to try and her that reimbursed. I’ always want to take my vehicle to the actual dealership to get work done so I know it’s done right and I’m willing to pay a premium to do so but I feel like I absolutely got taken advantage of and I’m not going for it after a $125 tow bill (would have been a $79 tow bill if I hadn’t taken her tow company recommendation but that’s my fault). With 3 Ubers on top of all that the grand total was $552.98 for a 50 cent bushing. Apologies for the long message I guess I’m just venting but thanks again for the help!

I would guess it’s something going out of spec intermittently. It could be a problem with the reading from the transmission as to what gear position the shifter is in, or the gear shift actuator itself. It’s also possible the cable is near to being out of adjustment.

@@CarShopTalk how do you adjust the cable? and how would you know which way? I'm having this exact problem. It was intermittent, but it's constant now. Car still shifts and drives just fine, but it turns off the a/c.

It just keeps randomly saying shift system fault or?

@@CarShopTalk Yes, it doesn't happen every time that the shifter is used. And the shifter itself works fine, even when the car is turned off in Drive it returns to Park smoothly. It just shows up intermittently when the shifter is used.

I think the recall is on 2013-16 Fusion. They need to open it up to more model years because its affecting more vehicles than those that are covered.

@@CarShopTalk From what I saw and read on KZfaq that was an $0.88 part but a $288 fix. This should have been a 2018 Ford Fusion Fix (Recall) since there are still cars on the road experiencing this issue. Thanks

Normally never. I haven’t seen any of the replacement bushings fail so I’m assuming they’ve corrected the rubber / plastic issue with the original ones. I wouldn’t expect to ever have to replace it a second time.

Have you checked that the bushing in the video is ok?

@@CarShopTalk, I fixed it all by myself!!!! I drive to my husband's work where he was stranded, he turned to me, and said, "You were right. "(About telling him I thought it was the bushing had come off)*High fives me* I do a freaking happy dance with tears because we can't afford an expensive fix, we load up to drive to the next town over for the part, drive back to his school, and I freaking fixed it!!! It felt so empowering to fix something on a car! Thank you so much for your video and explanation. I know it wasn't a major deal for most people, but it was for me.😊

Are you getting a shift system fault on the dash? It’s pretty easy to look under the hood and verify if it’s disconnected so I’d probably start there.

@@CarShopTalk there's no check engine on the dash. when i put the gear it's looking like a neutral and moving

@@CarShopTalk thanks. Anything about turning of adaptive learning on 10 speeds. I saw a yt say a ford tech revert the module to a ford programmed default shifting mode and his truck now shifts like new again.

@@Dirtyharry70585 I looked the other day when I was plugged into one and didn’t see it in the IDS menu or Forscan to turn off adaptive learning. It used to be in the menu on the 6-speeds but they may have taken it away. I would think it would be under tools in Forscan if it was available.

The only thing I can think of he may have done is clear and relearn the adaptive strategy. Ford’s been pushing that pretty hard on them. Basically you clear the adaptive strategy and slowly accelerate all the way up to 10th, then slowly decel all the way to a stop. Repeat 7 or 8 times. I usually have to go out in the country to do it. It does make a noticeable difference in shifting on some of them.

After 2 days it started? Started working again or?

I just had my rear breaks and roters replaced yesterday. Now my emergency break is showing engaged and my car won’t go in drive.😩

@@brileeb5527 On some vehicles with electric parking brakes there’s a relearn procedure that may need to be ran after brake replacement.

@@CarShopTalk yup but they are playing games. Also the bushing is a dealer part. You can't get it anywhere else. And it's only 2 dollars. But they goin hit some people over the head first if they haven't already🤷🏿‍♂️💯

And cheap materials. Plastic bushing have been around forever on shift cables and not been an issue. I’m sure they saved three cents on every bushing by going with some new plastic or something.
