My 2005 WK 5.7 had 51k on it when I bought it in 2015. 3 yrs later, I’m up to 94k and have spent less than $1000 in maintenance and repairs. But I’ve spent way more on mods... My lift is the Old Man Emu 2” HD, JBA upper control arms, SRT sway bars, BWoody sway bars links for 2” lift...all together around $2000 (not counting tires x5 $1200 & wheels x5 $500). Labor was free. Did it myself with help from the factory service manual. Keep posting about your Jeep!

Bought my wife her '06 JGC Ltd 14 years ago, standard maintenance, plus a battery and a Trans control unit... I've spent about $2,500 over the entire 14 years we've had it. Now it's my daily driver and runs perfectly @ 195k miles. These beasts run as good as you take care of them

This is great. I've owned my 2007 WK for a year and a half and probably put just as much into it. It looks like you learned a lot too and your Jeep looks great. The first day I bought it, I drove it home and the power went out completely. Three days later I figured it out-- I had to replace the corroded battery terminals. After that, it just kind of spiraled. I installed a radio mount kit, did oil and fuel filter changes, found out that the jack kit and the spare were not in the Jeep when I bought it so I got a used set of 5 wheels, bought new 5 tires, bought 2 spacers so the new wheels clear the front calipers, did all the brakes and rotors, removed the intercooler and cleaned it (Turbo diesel, fixed my boost issues), replaced the broken headlamp harness, removed the broken resonator and put in a new charge pipe with some nice stainless clamps, replaced the glowplugs and control module, replaced the water pump, replaced two belts, idlers and a tensioner (two belts and two pulleys got eaten when the water pump seized, the second belt was just shredded when I put it on and figured out the pump was the issue), replaced the t-stat, replaced the oil pressure sensor, coolant replacement, replaced the radiator (it started leaking), replaced the condenser (yeah that was dead too), redid the gaskets on the front and rear differentials.... Now all I have to do is get my TPMS fixed and fix my high fuel rail pressure code then I can do the fun things like lift kits and the radio. :-) The good news is that I've learned a lot. I also met some cool people and learned about powder coating and got a lot better at working on cars. I'm glad you mentioned the thermostat replacement too- I did mine when the water pump went out. The junkyard has been great for body parts. Rust abatement is something I'm still learning up here in Michigan.

I’ve owned a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7l v8 limited since brand new and have only had one issue with the drive shaft cv joint, cost me about 200$ and it still runs like brand new, I am up to 315,000 km

What are the tell tale signs that there’s issues w driveshafts cv joints? I rolled off my jgc wk laredo off dealership back in 2009 I think it was originally a rental w 19Kmiles and just recently hit 181K all freeway miles I’ve also replaced a lot of the basic stuff and maintenanced her real good she runs smooth as butter atm but I’m just curious about this cv issue...

First mistake, you bought a brand new model year, the WJ ended in 04, WK started in 05.... I have a 2003 and 2 2004 jeep WJs, ive had my DD for almost 11 years now, only time a mechanic has touched it, was for inspection, and to mount tires on the rims. I grew up working on European cars in my parents shop, when i moved down south, i brought mostly my tools and clothes. I ended up selling my VW, and in 2009 i bought my 03 WJ, 2wd, 4.0 for 10k with 80k miles on it. I read up on the most common problems (for 03 and 04, the window regulators are known to go bad, along with the cooling fan relay, and very minor electrical problems that are a very easy fix). I kept up on maintenance, and for under $700, i upgraded my base model 2wd WJ, to a 4x4 with the complete interior from an 04 overland, along with just about every upgrade/bells and whistles that came with the limited and overland models, like the fog lights w/ auto headlights sensor and switch, RB radio, heated leather seats (to replace my crappy base model cloth seats), remote start, chrome tow hooks, window rain guards, all the interior side panels and door panels were swapped out (base model was tan/brown with brushed aluminum trim, overland was black/grey with woodgrain trim), also took all the window regulators from the donor vehicle. The 04 overland had the tow package, i got and installed the power steering fluid and transmission fluid coolers, the rear hitch mount, and trailer wiring harness. The last things i got from that 1st part out was the 3.73 vari-lok axles (limited slip), d30 front, d44a rear, but held off for a couple months on installing then because i wanted to upgrade my tires, add a lift kit, and did not want the "quadra drive" transfer case the 04 overland came with. A few months later, i spent a weekend installing the following: IRO 3" lift w/ Bilstein shocks, 31.5" Goodyear Duratracs, a Select-Trac transfer case to complete the 4x4 conversion, matched with the Vari-Lok axles (and the 31.5 tires i got are perfect for the 3.73 ratio the axles came with, my stock axle was a d35 3.55 open diff). I also did a tune up on the motor, added some upgraded 4hole injectors, K&N FIPK, Doug Throley Headers, MagnaFlow Hi-Flo pre cats/downpipe, 2.5" exhaust pipe w/ a flowmaster 70 muffler. Also have done a few other upgrades/mods like the superchips flashpaq tuner, Stillen Drilled Brake Rotors w/ Metal Malicha pads, all stainless steel brake lines, the list goes on and on. I have also replaced random sensors and components as they started to get old, BEFORE they would fail. The only time my jeep ever has left me stranded, was when the starter died, and the jeep was in my driveway, so it really wasn't a problem. I now have owned my 2003 for almost 11 years, and it has passed 300k miles, still runs good, looks good, and by learning as much as i could about my specific model and setup from the forums, i have saved THOUSANDS on labor costs by keeping up on the maintenance, and doing all the repairs myself. Even with the upgrades and mods i have done to it, i have saved alot of money over the years, buy keeping it reliable

well my altenator and water pump just took a crap...changing them as we speak....so looks like I will be at 2300 so far, then a front diff, motor and trans...looks like I will have close to 7 k into my 05 grand cherokee....18 years old and counting. Still worth it being a new crappy car is 28k and a nice truck is a house at 80 k...

Maintenance wasn’t that bad. Some stuff you could have done your self honestly and save a lot of money. My family has owned gm trucks. Yes they are reliable but they are as reliable as your Jeep. Crap shoot ? Not great on highway? A lifted truck won’t be better trust me. Your gas needle moves.

personally i would stay away from any gm truck with AFM which is a 1500 with the 5.3. Seen many with lifter failures that end up in engine replacement which aint cheap, and if its over 100k I would be extra caucious

Perception on trucks is cool, but if you park on the street it's a big vehicle to maneuver around and trying to find parking on the street is going to be a challenge. I'd keep the Jeep for now honestly. So you put $500 in the Jeep every 3-4 months vs. $500 a month on a car loan PLUS anything you want to add for mods, it adds up very quickly! I have a new JLU I've barely done anything to it and already have over $1,800 in mods on top of the monthly payment. If you have the means that's cool but I wouldn't bury yourself with another car payment unless the channel can pay for it.
@ShiftedPerspective
@ShiftedPerspective 6 жыл бұрын
You make great points. My biggest issue is the rear diff and transmission bearing which are well over $2k in maintenance. Both are on their way out and I’d rather get rid of it before being forced to fix it in an emergency situation.
@supercharged00gtp
@supercharged00gtp 6 жыл бұрын
You mentioned a concern on the rear end, between that and the transmission I can see your point. Sometimes you have to know when the stop the bleeding, especially when you are forced to pay for the repairs. The Chevy's like you included in the video are nice, but they get pricey to repair as well. I know you are very intelligent, just don't get caught up in the hype of a certain vehicle. Keep your options open so you don't wind up with buyers remorse for jumping on the wrong vehicle to quickly. Enjoying your content and didn't realize you've had that Jeep for 3 years now, wow!

It occurred to me when you mentioned the water pump and thermostat that you don't appear to be doing the work yourself and that is adding a lot to the total cost. I have a '07 WK and I can tell you the quality control for ours is better because Jeep was part of Daimler-Chrysler back then with FIAT nowhere in the picture but the quality control still sucks compared to Toyota and Honda and things do go wrong. And regarding the tire size and rubbing, do yourself a favor and complete the pinch weld mod. It will give you the added clearance you need.

Well maybe its time to bail on this project. I lifted my wife's 05 WK 3 inches and haven't had any alignment issues so maybe its a sign that you get a Raptor. Or maybe buy a Japanese vehicle from what those owners say you don't need to change the oil and you can get like 1000 HP out of them if you add a turbo plus each one has like a million miles on them without doing anything to them.
