Excited about this one but mainly due to the triggering of memories of the day. One of the most successful days in the field I ever had. Working with two systems, good light, good weather, and luck. This image was part of a ten-year project titled "Man vs Nature," a nice, broad topic that allowed me to roll a lot of seemingly unrelated topics together.
Working reportage with a Hasselblad is limiting, slow but rewarding in its own way. The medium format camera can be a real crutch, making us believe our images are better than they are just based on the esthetic beauty of the negatives these machines produce. There are several things working in this frame. Let me explain.

The Internet will always be a double edged sword. I want to be reminded of before the Internet so I can briefly go back and experience what it could have been. I guess you could call it wanting to be like others, but that creates a paradox with the new wave of photographers.

Golden Age Ism. But, it was really about lifestyle and time. Personally, I miss it greatly. As I've watched the internet and social ruin a lot of good people.

Regarding medium format romanticism, as you put it: There is this mega-emphasis on image quality, rendering, falloff, etc etc.. shooting rolls of film at $2 per frame when you count lab costs. This movement is centered in a generation that grew up over the 10-15 year period where analog photography seemed to have all but died. The jump back into analog inevitably is going to be exaggerated. Something along the lines of going grocery shopping while hungry. From watching your videos, I know you agree this comeback is overall a very good thing, but yes, I love your point about the comparative challenge of working with 35mm. Worked for Koudelka, worked for Frank, worked for Salgado, the list goes on... and worked for you (though obvs. nothing wrong with also carrying around a Hasselblad :D ) ... So there ya go. I was born early enough to live before and during the transition to digital and internet ubiquity, and I will be forever grateful to have experienced my brain and life in those times.

It’s a different time a different generation film is different now , let people have fun with medium and large format which is the new medium format .. I am just happy that they like to use film .. they are all just experimenting and finding their way , and who can blame them when these awesome cameras which cost as much as a crop sensor rig new .. let them learn the history and process , we all started somewhere .. and let’s face it , if we were 22 we would be doing the same thing .. I just smile when I seem them hauling the mamiya 6*7s around .. just waiting for someone to break out a Fuji gsx6*9 …in the middle of the desert , peace and motherfucking love

Exactly right and well said. Anything that keeps film alive is good. The prices I see are pure crazy so kudos to anyone willing to pay those $. I'd be bulk rolling again. What I should have done is simple. Commit to ONE system and spend more time in the field.

Yes, use it and keep it alive. The hype surrounding it doesn't leave that small circle, which is too bad because a serious portion of the public doesn't know film is still around. Imagine if they did with the millions of unused film cameras sitting in dark hall closets.

Good point on the deceptivness of the medium format in the days of the easier the better.

Even though I have no interest in doing this for a living despite a few odd paid gigs over the years I really enjoy you talking about your career and experiences in the craft. I also enjoy how you experience working with the different camera platforms and describe them since I've stuck with the 4/3 system for almost 18 years and I don't know any other type of camera format.

When working as a photographer I had to use many. Some by choice others by clients who needed one thing or another. But the gear was never the focal point. The industry was and in and it's changing on weekly basis. Fascinating to watch.

Larry Fink said the square format is the most difficult because it has no inherent energy. The 35mm frame comes preloaded with tension.

The merits of photographs seem to be the least consumed photographic content on YT. Seems odd but sure looks that way. Fun to break down a few that work and now on to a few that don't. (Mine)

A question for the next q&a: How do you go about choosing a film format for a project? I recently got myself a Rolleiflex and I use it for anything and everything, completely neglecting my 35mm cameras. When would you choose 35mm over 120 and vice versa?

Sometimes you'd just have to accept that the picture you have in hand is the best you can do. By moving right you'd bring the people shadow perilously close to touching (if not actually touch) the left handlebar and the bike would also be off-centered

I had a similar gripe with a photograph I took that is very well considered by many. One thing that no one notices that could have been changed by rising or lowering a touch and it annoys me every time I see it.
