In this bonus video I'm going to assemble and review the Dome Cutter by Shifting Lands. This video is not sponsored by Shifting Lands but since I purchased this item and was about to assemble it I figured why not show you all this jig for the Proxxon.

An interesting vid. I was hoping you would show a Dome, at the end, that you had produced using it. I have considered buying one of these devices but have pondered how to cut a TRUE dome, using it. What I cannot figure out is that out of the templates that the video showed, . the one with the most sides had twelve. Therefore it would not produce a true dome but a twelve sided dome. Or am I missing something? No doubt sanding could be done but that defeats the object of the device. Maybe you could produce another video, showing how you produce a true dome. Please.

Hi Roger. You are right. The dome cutter cut domes but it does not cut perfect round domes in one go. I do however use the dome cutter to cut these domes using the twelve sided template. Cutting the 12 sides of the dome and then cutting the twelve corners of this dome. In this way I end up with a 24 sided dome . The final step is to sand it into a round shape.

@@TabletopWitchCRAFT Gerard thanks for the explanation. Following your procedure, and having 24 sides, you will minimise the amount of sanding required. So, taking it a step further, rotating the foam at 10 degrees instead of 15 degrees would produce an even smoother dome. (I wish May 2020 would hurry up!)

Thank you for this video. It made me brave enough to start the build! I must have watched the critical part of it 4 to 5 times at least. And for sure I made a similar error, nevertheless...DOH! For me it were both 5-sided parts as they are the only ones being asymmetrical. And I’ve only seen it after the wood glue was completely dry... Not reading through the comments here, I searched on wood constructing web sites and got yet another tip for loosening wood glue: As most wood glue is not heat resistant, a simple hair dryer pointing to the seam heated up the hooks on my parts so easily I thought I share this for all who come to your video (being the best assemble video for this shifting lands tool out there). It only took 30-60s to heat up per hook. Even heating up 2 hooks at a time was no big effort. Thanks again for putting together this great video! @Gerard: Perhaps adding a note to the manual pointing out especially to the fail-potential of the 5-sided discs would be useful for future customers. ;-)

FYI, you can get 3" thick XPS from Menards, but I believe you have to special order. Most retail building material stores (Menards, Home Depot, Lowes) only carry 2" in stock. For sure Menards can get 3." That being said, I am a concrete contractor, and through my supplier I can get 4" XPS, and I believe they can also get 6" but this is NOT your typical homeowner store. So yes, they do make XPS thicker than 2" in the US, but you can only get it through construction supply houses.

It's not bad at all to put together... a lot of rinse and repeat. A super handy jig to have in your Proxxon arsenal.

You might consider drilling the dowel pins on the templates to a diameter of a toothpick. Placing said toothpick through the axis of the template would give you a small pin that can be placed in the mark from your circular cutting board. No need for measuring to ensure the template is centered.

I hear you Mark, and while not for everyone, these jigs really do help produce some awesome creations. You can always use styrofoam balls found at craft stores if this isn't your thing, you just need to manage the texture.
The Proxxon has some flaws...How to deal with them?
