Thanks for showing us these killer BFT vertical jigs. The really big BFT have been bitting good as of late. I hope you were able to catch one.
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Both jigs work well from what I hear. Unfortunately the bluefin shut us out on our trip. Maybe next time.

Regarding the Nomad foil problems, I have found that with new Nomad lures as well. You wonder what the quality control is. The lures are expensive. I did re-glue one of the foils. Hope you have a good trip.
@ShinyInsanity Жыл бұрын
Thanks for confirming it's not just the ones I've bought. I guess the foil just catches us fishermen anyway but it would be nice if they came out of the package without some of these minor defects.

Thanks for your video, in New Zealand we just use the jig assist hooks, we change them out for Japanese hooks, jigstar assist cord and use split rings and welded rings rated above 300 lbs, we dont fish for bluefin with them though , we troll lures for them. It makes me wonder if this method would work here.
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
I think it would be worth a shot to try. Over here bluefin are finicky buggers that sometimes won't touch anything and other times will take lures early in the morning or at night. We also use jig assist hooks but with heavy kevlar and split rings. Many different combinations to try.

Would you say the wider the jig (relative to its length) the more likely it is made for vertical jigging off from a boat rather than fished from the shore? I think the wider body allows it to flutter more, and therefore, more appropriate for vertical jigging rather than casting and retrieving horizontally like a crankbait. What do you think?
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think the wider jig would be better suited to vertical jigging than casting and retrieving. They are built to flutter. Not to say you couldn't but there are probably better options for casting/retrieving that wouldn't have as much drag in the water.
@jasl73583 жыл бұрын
I've always had problems with the shimano getting fouled up. As in my line getting caught in the hooks then it doesn't flutter/fall correctly. I like the butterfly flat side better.
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had that problem but I only have one assist hook on the top and one welded hook on the bottom. Not sure if that makes a difference with the way it flutters.
@jasl73583 жыл бұрын
@@ShinyInsanity i haven't tried them rigged the way you have it. I've only tried them with double assist hooks. I do still like them they definitely catch fish.

What do you use those flat fall jigs for bluefin? Yellowfin?
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
Typically bluefin, but they would probably work for yellowfin as well.

What is your setup for these jigs? I'm having a hard time finding a rod for 300g+
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
The rods we are using for these for this style of fishing are not traditional jig rods. They are stiffer long range tuna rods such as 3x Super Seeker or Calstar/United Composites models.
@joedennehy3863 жыл бұрын
Jigging master make plenty of short jigging rods up to pe10
@joedennehy3863 жыл бұрын
And there jigs are better than shimano, shimano copied jigging master

Can you catch rock fish on these also
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I think rockfish would eat these as well but they are pretty heavy. There are smaller, lighter versions of jigs that might be better suited to catching them.

Nomad uses BKK hooks. Excellent hooks
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
Did not know that. They seem really light for their size for some weird reason but is probably due to their alloy blend.
@JeffSmith-eq3kc3 жыл бұрын
Keep those BKK hooks though, they aren't cheap on their own. I've caught 100lb YFT on BKK assist hooks that I make. I never trust the premade assist hooks as I don't know how good the cord is. I've actually started buying Shout hooks and they're great. I've always used the Shout cord and it's great.
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm definitely keeping them but may remake them with kevlar cord later on. I like Shout hooks as well in addition to Owner.
@JeffSmith-eq3kc3 жыл бұрын
@@ShinyInsanity yeah Owner has a few models that are awesome too I've got some somewhere. It's interesting here on the east coast in my experience people usually stay with some form of assist hooks. If I know there are say 150+ lb tuna I actually go to a single strand wire as my cord but I'm going to rig up a few the way you have it. I've never had a large tuna tear my cord but I like the idea. We released an 81" giant bluefin this winter that was caught on a 240g vertical jig with a cord. Completely different fishery though compared to you all, it was 40 degrees out and we were 60+ miles offshore!
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
@@JeffSmith-eq3kc I've know a few folks that have had bluefin out on the west coast chew through their heavy leaders and assist cord, but usually on extended fights. These are fish smaller than the ones on the east coast but up to 350lbs. I would still put trust in heavier kevlar cord assist hooks personally instead of single strand wire, just my preference. It's part of the fun to experiment with different rigging techniques.
@seanblanch95363 жыл бұрын
@@ShinyInsanity Never had issue with the Kevlar cord except that time a Wahoo bit my flat fall. Also I've started swapping out the stock hooks on my butterfly flat falls after a bluefin straightened it out. I'm going to put those nomad BKK hooks to the test this season. Going out next week from SD.

Judging a jig on how pretty it is, is kind of foolish. They make pretty jigs to catch fishermen. If you want to judge a jig properly, tie it on and try it in a pool or off a dock; to check is action and if is really doing what you want. Then take it fishing and compare them. A great jig; even it started pretty, is going to stay that way after bouncing on the bottom and hooking several fish.
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
Shiny jigs catch fishermen as well.

If they know them hooks are No GOOD why dont they just PUT the RIGHT ones oN saves time and Lost FisH due to daT.
@ShinyInsanity3 жыл бұрын
They may be geared towards anglers that want to do catch and release so make the barbs less pronounced to help with release. Pretty easy to change them out, but I'd prefer bigger barbs myself.
