Rigging the Shimano Flat Fall Jig for BIG Tuna

Ditch the Dinky Shimano stock assist hooks and split rings on the Larger Jigs if looking for BIG Tuna!
You will need Owner Monster Assist hook size 7 , Owner Hyper wire split ring size 9 and Quick Rig Sea Buoy Pro grade rigging Swivels size #200 . Rig for stronger setup , more hookups and EASY changes! WORKS FOR MOST TYPES OF VERTICAL AND BUTTERFLY JIGS..

Those small hooks you trashed work good on the smaller slow pitch rockfish jigs … I do use the Owner Monsters or the Mustad assist hooks in the 7/0, 9/0, 11/0, and 14/0’s … Lately I’ve been making my own assist hooks using 500# hollow core cord doubled with a 7x7 seven strand wire doubled as well … I’m using the Owner 6.5 and 7.5 (450#) solid rings … if you can find the Owner Monster with the shorter cord lengths … I like them … one thing great about the Owner Monsters is they have that clear protective sleeve over the cord…

we spend thousands of dollars in gear and trips to chase these fish, putting every possible thing in our favor is very smart always. Thanks! I buy these from my local bait shop and they sell them re-rigged properly... ($30 a pop though)

I'm with you almost all the way. I redo all terminal tackle that comes on 99% of jigs. However, I'm not buying these jigs at the price they go for. I think there are better flat fall jigs out there for less money. Sometimes I have to order them and they take some time to get but they're better IMO. There is a West Coast company making similar jigs I think it's called Calissa that makes better jigs for half the price if you care to check them out.

In my experience, 60 to 80# Fluorocarbon gets me many more strikes but the downside is that instead of Tuna, I get Wahoo and/or king mackerel and they will slice my leader like a hot knife through butter. I've lost many $20 lures in the Caribbean. Results with steel leaders aren't as good. What say you?

How do you use this jig? Do you have to have a boat for that? Can you cast them from shore?

You definitely use it on a boat. Using extremely heavy gear you drop it down to where the skipper is metering the giant tuna, and then wind it up as fast as you can, repeat until you get bit. It's a lot of work but the fish are powerful and you need to have your tackle in perfect condition.

Sam Bernal sure that is a black hole 250 gram jigging rod matched to a jigging master pe4 size reel. That is my yellowtail and school tuna setup. 65 lb braid. For larger tuna I use a black hole 450 gr rod and jigging master pe7 to pe10 size reel filled with 100 lb

I just picked up a 300g Rip Roller for big BFT. It came with mustad ultrapoint assist hooks. Should I still swap them for 7/0 monster assist hooks?

for a 300g rip roller Matbe owner monster 9/0 top and BOTTOM for the 400-500g =10 or 11/'s

MikeMarkCA. Hi Mike. You could save them for use on smaller fish but the better assist hooks such as owners are not that expensive and I would rather be safe using better rigging than sorry using the stock hooks

Tosses the hooks- When someone does something that dumb for the sake of drama , it's harder to believe in any other ideas they might have.

Have your ever tried the quick rig 450lb test swivel instead of the 200lb?

hi I have ..it's a size thing though. havent had this size fail ..yet :) on 200lb plus fish multiple times. many times now I will also add an owner assist hook on the bottom as well.

130 to 150 lb Fluoro is perfect. Some use 200. I prefer the 130-150

I rigged my flat fall just as this video suggested. I was missing hookups on blackfin, This was not a good setup for them. It may be fine for yellow fin though. After I switched back to a stock jig, I didn't miss any after that.

We use a asian style jigging setup ... Jigging master 7/0-10/0 reel with 100lb test and a black hole 350-450 gram rod- or similar... this setup up is half the weight of typical 30 size reel...

I would only open and use the split ring one time. And only if you can’t solder your own rings.

Hi Mike. Thge beauty of this setup is that if the split ring fails (and the owners haven't ever for me) max loss is the jig.. The fish would still be hooked to the line. Split rings also make for quick change on the jigs without having to re tie your line every time..saving time and leader length
