The only thing I missed about having Jonathan instead of Merkabah is the constant "SUCH IS A SAMURAI SKILL" shouting in battle.

I'd like to think that the protagonist volunteered to be the matyr after seeing how scared Jonathan was of death and not wishing force him through it, and that doing so touched Jonathan. He says that humans and demons think nothing but themselves, yet he sees that his friend is willing to give his life for him. That clears his fear and he becomes the matyr not as much for "the people" as he claims but more for the protagonist, seeing him both as the only one who can truly guide the people to salvation and his most valuable friend

Actually, it's because since the people of Mikado were never allowed to read books, the very act of reading is a rebellion against the law and thus sets free their repressed demon side. Apparently, Lilith herself didn't turn people into demons, she just gave them normal books, which somehow made them realise how messed up Mikado was to the point where they freely turned into demons.

The thing is, Jonathan doesn't take every order from the gods without question. He was really surprised from hearing the plot of destroying Tokyo, but since he was basically pushed back to a corner, he had no choice but to side with them. He knows what the what the humans, the Gods, and even himself are doing wrong, but he had no choice. Like Isabeau in my opinion, he just wanted the conflict to end and the best for the humans, albeit in a different way.

Jonathan's fusion looks less painful compared to Walter's. I kinda imagine it is like Walter gets ripped apart or eaten alive when the blood splatters.

i would have been fine with the law ending, but then i found out in the DLC missions "clipped wings" that the four archangel are only using you, and that they lied about their plan being gods will.

Alright, you've made me appreciate these characters even more than I already did. And yeah, she really does make the least amount of mistakes. In Neutral route, I *love* her development, and how she really comes into her own as a character. Seeing her happy, seeing her proudly stand up for what she believed in even against Merkebah really made me happy. (That dialogue in the Merkebah battle...so powerful :0). You've convinced me Jonathan wanted a very similar thing...he deserved better.

Also, unless in the Law or Chaos path, Isabeau in my opinion made the least amount of mistakes from this whole conflict. In all three paths Jonathan made many mistakes that basically lead to his demise, like Walter, but he knows what he's doing is wrong, unlike Walter who thinks he is mostly right. He knows that he would bring about great destruction, but going so far, witnessing all that he witnessed, sacrificing all that was precious to him, with no other leads... yeah. That's what I believe.

SMT IV lends that Neutral is canon. The game doesn't even let the Route Split be your choice as canonically Flynn is made to have gone with both. Blasted Tokyo is Law based on Flynn picking Law in another Timeline. Infernal Tokyo is Chaos based on Flynn picking Chaos in another Timeline. This game's Timeline is based off Past Flynn picking Neutral and aiding Masakado. Hence why Burroughs on Neutral says your choices are the same as your past self.

well for some games maybe but in Shin Megami Tensei 1 at least going with either route meant eradicating the other side if i remember correctly

That's exactly right. Everything you said was right on the market. SMT1 is basically the only canon ending of the entire series (minus spin offs I think). Makes it easier to make the choice of whatever ending you want without any worry.

To be fair, Neutral being temp makes sense as humanity is constantly tested by both extremes in a never ending war.

I didn't see this comment. Anyway, the developers officially said that there's no canon ending. Yamai officially said that in an interview. You see more in Neutral, and it even hints that Neutral is probably the most likely to happen route, but it's still not canon from what they said.

Neutral: Migrate the peaceful people of Mikado to a ruined dump of a city, to live with people who previously slaughtered one another over philosophical beliefs. God and Lucifer are pissed off and are threatening their return, thus another Armageddon war. In Neutral ending, what can possibly go wrong?

I wouldn't say nobody likes him. In recent games, he has been portrayed in a much lighter and better tone. The best or happiest Devil Survivor ending was the Kingdom of Saints one and SMT IV has a pretty good law ending, sure Tokyo is destroyed, by humanity afterwards lives in peace for eternity, without any evil.

Law/Chaos events always happen too regardless if your choice as well, Neutral events only happen if you pick Neutral. Ex. Regardless of your choice Walter merges with Lucifer and Jonathan with the Archangels. Isabeau opposes you on Law/Chaos no matter what, her fate only changes on Neutral.

Exactly. Thank goodness I've met someone who has firsthand experience with SMT matters. Admittedly, I want to play them, but I've got enough of old school and new school gaming on my plate to finish as it stands. I'm not a crazy Persona fan, but I have played all of that series excluding Innocent Sin (need to get the PSP version). I really need to sink my teeth into SMT at some point.

The only way to have Absolute Order is to remove the ability to think which is what Law is about. In Chaos people are given the ability to express the ability to think but it brings Chaos because people will always have different ideals such as who should have power and such.

True that both Law and Chaos result in violence and destruction, but Law is a good path. In Megami Tensei 1 and 2, SMT 1 and 2 and most of the earlier SMT games the Law route stayed the same and was a good path. However, in newer SMT games the Law path has taken on more of a Chaos complex.

How is it no better? You reject both extremes, and remove the ceiling above Tokyo, without killing everyone in Mikado. Everybody wins. It's far better than the other two, where Isabeau is essentially a hero, fighting for what hurts the least amount of people, and is just slaughtered by you. Even if it's only temporary, or they both come back, at least in the Neutral route what Flynn and Isabeau accomplish is something to be proud of, without murdering everyone to do so.

I don't know why your comment was marked as spam, but thank you. I think both the Law and Neutral routes are wonderful, while I didn't like the Chaos route... at all. Besides, I'm a bit biased since Jonathan is my most favorite character in this game, and one of the only Law characters I love and can relate to in the entire series (other than Amane from Devil Survivor).

Just because the past life Flynn chose law or chaos which ended in Blasted and Inferno Tokyo does not mean the same will happen if the current in-game Flynn chooses law or chaos. In fact, Jonathan tells Flynn that they have to make sure they don't repeat the mistake of Kiyoharu or Kenji, meaning that Blasted Tokyo or Inferno Tokyo are not definite. People assume that Neutral is canon because it requires the most work, but no where does that mean or state that it is canon because of this.

Law does not mean good as people always believe. Law is about absolute Order where no one would cause harm. However, as long people can think their will be no absolute Order since people will have different beliefs. Chaos is about the ability to express free will which tends to always result in Chaos which entitles destruction.

Totally fine. I just say Law though since most of the people and samurai in their home survives. The fact that I saved millions from there and was certain that they won't be in any further danger fills me with joy. I love Isabeau, but there comes sacrifices, which I am a bit used to when it comes to the SMT series.

Things you find out from talking to NPCs in Mikado: after taking over, the archangels killed anyone in the country who had read a book. That's what they mean by killing the last of the Filth in Mikado.

None of them are the most "moral" because morality is subjective. Some may agree with Walter's "No gods or kings, only men" ideals whilst others may agree with Jonathan in "preserving peace at all costs". So neither path is good, bad or moral. It entirely depends on your views.

Each ending has a huge consequence if you think about it. Chaos shows it's obvious consequences so I won't go there. In Law, pretty much Tokyo is destroyed, with Mikado having everlasting peace. In Neutral, indeed it is temporary, but there's also the major problem of Tokyo and Mikado coexisting, which most likely won't really happen in my opinion. So you basically find Neutral to be the best? Perfectly fine. I'm just saying that there's no good ending. Best one's really what you think it is.

SMT fans often assume that neutral is canon, but from my knowledge, the only canon ending in any of the games that has been announced was the neutral ending in SMT I. There's no good ending in SMT IV, but as you already know, there is one where somebody wins, unlike the other two.

Because she loves Flynn but cannot condone genocide as she wants to save both Tokyo and Mikado's peoples. At least she has a happy end with Flynn on Neutral.

Nope. While Jesus isn't specifically talked about in the series(though he is the Messiah Persona in Persona 3 FES), the Bible is referenced. In Devil Survivor(I know its not the main series but still), after Noaya references himself as Cain, Amane says his memories are of the Old Testament. If there is an Old Testament, there is a new one too. Also, what do you think the crosses on the angels in the series represent? You provide no proof that YHVH doesn't care about all the commandments.
