As great as this performance is I feel this is not Brent’s best vocal rendition of this song. It seems he’s most definitely protecting his voice here because in the original version he goes all out. You should definitely check out the album version both with the band, which is a more hard hitting tune and specifically the acoustic version. Those are where he sounds best imo.

In this version, Brent is singing in a safe way to keep from straining his vocals. I'm not saying this is a bad version but it definitely is not as heart felt as the original studio version. You have to hear the studio version to feel the emotion of the lyrics.

They have a live version of save me, just the singer and a guitar player in a white room and his voice seems to be a little worn out. The way he sings around it and through it makes the song even better to me. Worth a dig to find, though I feel like it would be at the top of a KZfaq search

@@TheBrokenShelf 100% agree. This was the studio UGO performance that they did a great while back.. Back when Jasin Todd was the lead guitarist. Not only did Brent Smith kill it in this version but Jasin had a way of playing any guitar, acoustic especially, that was just in harmonious agreement with Brent's voice and energy. I actually Prefer the studio version.. some songs are just soo hard to recreate live, they have to rework it for live performance, especially an intimate acoustic setting. I'm sure there is just some artistic changes that they do like this video obviously has, but a lot has to do with saving the voice for consistency through the whole performance. Plus these are usually recorded for DVD release or Box Set. I seen Shinedown live a long time ago and his voice was not in top shape then and had to make compromises just to make it through the whole set. They still rocked tho!!!

Brent tells a story about how it’s not actually about suicide. It’s about being stuck in a certain mindset and not being able to see what’s all really around you. Like looking down the barrel of a gun instead of seeing what’s around it.
@Sylvan_dB
@Sylvan_dB 2 жыл бұрын
Did you catch the slight change in the lyrics. The piece starts "staring down the barrel of a 45" is very dark, and hard to see anything else that might be positive, but the end is "staring down a 45". That's very different. "Staring down" is a challenge, in this case, challenging the darkness of the 45, and "staring it down" to a victory, "I'm still alive."

First of all, you're a genius. Your insight into the technical aspects of singing are definitely insightful and your ability to articulate your analyzes and opinions is unmatched. I have only watched two of your videos so far, the other being "Simple Man" also by Shinedown which, in my opinion, is the greatest vocal performance in the history of rock n roll. However, I have to agree with the comment below in that you absolutely have to check out the album version of this song even if you don't do a reaction video for it. I know you can truly appreciate this man's voice and it is on full display in the album version.

This song help me so much during some of the darkest moments of my life. Shinedown as a whole is one of the best bands I've ever seen. I would highly suggest the song "Get Up". I think your spot on on the bands messages of finding a way to keep living, it's even reflected in how they say farewell at the end of shows "it's never goodbye, it's just till next time". You really need to hear their song "monsters". The music video especially is so emotional. Its a song about everyone having their internal monsters to fight (in his case his addiction). His switch from verses to chorus are so good in that. The visuals of the music video also tell a story and its hard not to cry.
