Hi there!
In today's video I want to preset to you my new ShinHan paints.
I really loved the sample pack so I went ahead and purchased 3 more large tubes.
Here's what I got:
(1) Cobalt blue
(2) Cadmium Red Deep
(3) Cadmium Yellow Deep
This actually represents a combo I really love: Cool blue and warm yellows and reds.
In the video I fill up a new palette with these three paints, and then show what each of them looks like, and what combos I can achieve using them.
After recording this video I also did a full painting with them, and I'm very pleased with the way they act and the result.
Unfortunately I didn't see a way of purchasing individual tubes online, but you can get the sets.

PS there is a "secret" mixing space under the 6 well section in some Van Gogh palettes. The little brush has a special tip to help you pry that open. Not sure if this applies to the palette you have there, but it happen on the ones I have. Thanks again for the review!

My first watercolor was Shinhan. I learned oriental watercolor in S. Korea And these were provided. They fall between watercolor and gouache. Great for oriental art where you mainly mix colors on the brush and just lay the brush down. I don't line the way they look glazing color over color. Enjoyed your video.

PS 3: Schmincke has 15ml tubes. Jackson's in London 🇬🇧 and Peters Art in Berlin 🇩🇪 both sell Shinhan tubes individually as well and ship worldwide. I am off to see your other videos using these paints now! Thanks, Liron.

Thank you Liron! :) I'm a real colour junkie and love watching watercolours being swatched and mixed. These mixing videos are great because they help in making up my mind on which colours I will consider buying next. And I do believe there are many others who are just like me. ;) Jackson's Art sells Shinhan PWC in open stock, btw. Also I was a bit confused when you sait that Schmincke makes only 5ml tubes as they do make 15 ml also, and I vaguely recollent seeing you having the bigger tubes.

I never owned large Schmincke tubes (in fact I’ve never seen them 😛). I found the larger tubes only for their other lines of paint, not watercolor. And thank you, I’m happy these can help you choose the next paints you want to get 😁🎨

From what I have read, they seem to be really good. They are also consistent with European type watercolour in that they do have a dispersant component similar to ox gall to aid wet in wet. Many of the traditional Asian varieties including Holbein do not use dispersants and behave differently on paper.

Great video, as always :) these seem like nice paints. If you want to get more mixing space, I believe the tray lifts out of the lid in this palette, so you can use the whole lid area

That’s actually true. It’s hilarious - I started painting with that very same palette model (so not this specific one, but another identical one), and completely forgot about that 😂 Thank you for reminding me!

Liron I for one look forward to seeing that! Additionally, I really like this palette for some reason ( probably because having 7 separate mixing areas helps me keep my paint clean/er even though I don’t get too fussed about that) and bought another recently just like Ove did for you :)

Have you filled this "primary colour palette" as you were describing here? I find that a very interesting set up to compare brands and warm/cold colours. I enjoyed this review, as I have been curious about this brand for a while. Thanks again!

i bought both shinhan pro and pwc sets im happy with them im getting the pure pigment 24 set of mission gold yes im getting to many if there is such a thing i got the 20ml tubes of shinhan

enjoy your paint review. I'm thinking that Ultramarine blue would pair better with the cadmiums.Best of luck in your quest for a studio.

Really nice review! Those paints look really nice! By the way, colors like cobalt blue or ultramarine are actually warm, you phthalo or prussian blue is going to be cool:)

Haha I see 😛 it’s all so relative, so compared to my Ultramarines, the Cobalt looks a little cooler. But when comparing to Phthalo, I can definitely see it’s warm in relations 🙂

Have you tried mission gold yet? I was given the pure pigment set for Christmas and the more I use them, the more I love them. They can be very bright though, I’d like to know what you think of them!

I like these and they're vegan, I think.. My favourite vegan paints so far are Qor.. just love the way they flow and their pigments.

I have just found out that Daniel Smith are also vegan.. YAY!! I thought they contained honey.. there are a couple of coloures that are not.. bone or ivory black and I'm not sure what else but I'm going to look further into this as they look so scrumptious! Thanks for your reply.. I'll keep and eye out for your next vid :)

Do all watercolors do well when placed in pans and re wet?

All but Winsor and Newton. That company claims that you need to buy their pans for dry paint. Also most Viridians don't rewet easily.

It depends on the brand and specific paint. Some dry completely, others can stay wet. I can say so far that Schmincke, Daniel Smith and PWC for the most part do really well like that.

Quor does not palette well at all.it is designed to be used from the tube and is gorgeous. It is ruined in the palette, loses all of its great features.

Have you tried the "True" primary's Cyan, Magenta & Hansa Yellow? This trio is great but a bit more neutral.

I don't know if it's the "true" primary but it's all subjective anyway! You just want a yellow that's not biased too much to green or orange.

Tried it and used it here and there. I know it’s technically a more “accurate” trio, as it is also used in printing. But I guess I have a weird taste for primary combos 😛 I really like using warm colors, so either all warm (ultramarine as blue, Cads / Pyrrols as reds and yellows) or a cooler blue (Phthalo, Cobalt) and warm reds and yellows.

Shinhan paints are nice quality but the hues are nothing near to what they should be.

Some of the blue hues are way off. Cobalt and ceruleum blue hues look like variants of Phthalo blue. To be honest I like Shinhans and if price is a consideration they worth buying. I bought a big box of 32 x 15ml tubes. I don't really have any favourites because I think most artists watercolours perform well. Shinhans are a good economical brand In my opinion. I use Jackson's art own brand here in the UK.
