There doesn’t seem to be much info on the Shinhan PWC paints, yet they’re so cheap for professional watercolors! But how do they compare to the rest of my collection?

This company's colour naming policies are for the birds. And among their pigments there are a lot of real unknowns, and several known fugitives. For instance: they have 4 colours containing the known fugitive PR87, Alizarin Crimson. Two are rated 'Normal' light-fastness, and two 'High' light-fastness. [

This is all such good information! Thank you! They use such strange pigments too, like that orange that I can't find much info on. I think I need to do some lightfastness tests for sure. I didn't know their "professional" line was student grade! Which means they have two different student grade lines, professional and SWC. So strange. Thank you again for all the info!

You're welcome Ley, on sites like KZfaq we can all benefit by pooling whatever info & knowledge we've accumulated. Their website lists 3 lines: PWC (Artist), Pro (Student), and Shami (for kids & dabblers). I poked around, and as far as I can figure out, 'SWC' is just their name for the Professional line for their Korean domestic market. But SWC turns up internationally, for online mail order. So it looks like Professional and SWC are different lablings of the same student grade paints.

Oh, one more observation: Although select trusted-pigment PWC tubes are perfectly fine, note that they sometimes have a somewhat blotchy way of settling onto paper. The grind is very fine, not much granulation - more like W&N than DSmith. Er, actually, I think Holbein was their model. But like for any art material, every artist would need to decide whether they satisfy their own needs.

I have a suggestion: Since the company's watercolour line names are confusing, if we're interested in Artist grade paints, we can all just refer to PWC paints, and drop the company name altogether. Cuz: 1) Many folks, hearing that S.H. makes good paints, will go and buy a different w.c. line than was being praised; and 2) I smell questionable ethics in their marketing; so I don't think the company needs our free advertising. :^/

I don't want to think the company is purposefully misleading consumers but ... yeah, it's definitely very sketchy. The particular tubes I have are fine, I don't have any blotch issues from my testing, but I don't think I'll be purchasing more of these paints. I don't currently sell my art, but if I did I would never want to use paints that don't have lightfastness ratings based on ASTM standards. At this point, the paints make me think more of Da Vinci than Holbein, but I may just not have a large enough collection of Holbein to compare. It's really pricy here. Thank you for all your helpful information and for raising such concerns! I feel bad in hindsight that my review did not come off as more critical of their practices with naming paints and using pigments. Would you mind if I pinned your comment thread?

I bought the box of 64. I've used Daniel Smith and Winsor and Newton and Paul Rubens. You are right, they are not as good as DS and WN for lightfastness, but I do love them and bought the at DeSerres on sale.

Nice video, there aren't enough on these paints! I recently picked up some that were on sale at Deserres but I was pretty selective with what paints I bought. Like some of the other viewers have noted, they use a number of fugitive pigments (with oddly high lightfast ratings...), and also have a lot of repeats with pigments as well as many multi-pigment mixes. That being said, I was pretty stoked to pick up some cadmiums for relatively cheap as well as some of the other higher quality pigments they have in their line like PR254. They seem like a great option to learn on for student paints, perhaps a step up from Van Gogh I'd say but not sure I'd call them professional.

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I picked mine up at Deserres too, they seem to forever be on sale there. It is so odd how they rate these paints! But I'm glad you found some use for them. And I agree, these are great for students but definitely not professional.

They're not a step up from Van Gogh. Van Gogh, Cotman and Aquafine all beats them. Maybe not in terms of intensity/strength, but in everything else. Those three brands are serious and technically competent.

Just a note... SWC and Shami are not the same. SWC is the same as PWC. SWC is for the Korean market and PWC is for the international market. Shami is their scholastic line.
@LeySketch
@LeySketch 5 жыл бұрын
I knew SWC and Shami were not the same line, but I didn't realize SWC was the same as PWC based on their website (as it lists all three lines with separate colour charts)! So thank you for that information. Their site could stand be a bit clearer, I think.
@kurinezumi

@@LeySketch Yeah, I've seen other people mention the same thing... Maybe the website was changed, but on the English site I currently only see PWC, Professional and Shami. I actually live in Korea, so when I walk into a store or look online at Korean sites I only find SWC as their artist grade line. The Korean version of their website lists SWC as their highest grade premium watercolor (and mentions they are tailored to the Korean market and not warantied outside Korea). I don't know if the "tailoring" means there are any formula differences, but they offer the same 104 colors.

Those mixes are even nicer than tube colors. I wondered about these paints too since I saw ashiyaart using them. I also search for a good even Cobalt Violet Light. I bought Daniel Smith's and it was also really weak and streaky.

Yes, I totally agree! I ended up with some super pretty mixes. Not gonna lie, Ashiya was a huge reason why I was curious, too! Her use of colour is so amazing. Kat from Meow Meow Kapow has Cobalt Violet by M Graham in her latest video and it looks really pretty! She says it's not streaky or weak at all.

Yes Ashiya's art is super pleasing to watch and I live for her palette close ups. Thanks for the info about Cobalt Violet. Will have to look more into M Graham. I hear they are kinda like the Mission Gold that I use so yup.

The video was very informative and it helped me figure out what was wrong with one of my colors. I just bought this Paul Rubens 24 full pan paint set and all the colors are rich and I love them except one - the Raw Sienna. It has too much binder and not enough pigment so it reacts kinda strange - you can't really get a color mass unless you let it dry and do a second coat and even then it has a glossy finish. I'll replace it with another brand in the near future.

@LeySketch

Oh really? I got these online technically (my closest art store is 2 hours away) but they sell them there as well as poster paints and art markers by Shinhan. Meanwhile I can't find any gouache other than W&N other than at Jackson's! Geez. Isn't it weird?? I definitely have M Graham's on my wishlist. I just want more MG in general. I just love working with it, and it's cheaper than a lot of paints. Aw man, I have a list of art and videos I want to make that is never-ending! I feel you!

thank you for another PWC review as it is very rare! I was wondering if you maybe have some holbein watercolor around and see if they might have certain similarity? I have a mineral violet from Shinhan PWC and it might be looking the same to holbein's mineral violet(according to Jane Blundell's blog) yet it's made of single PV23 pigment which was a bummer to me since I was looking for more bluish purple like colors made with PV23 from other brands(holbein's permanent violet and sennelier's dioxazine purple are made of the same pigment and similar tinting and other properties feel to em), just as much as the peacock blue of PWC seems to be named after holbein's. so yeah, it seems like a good chance of random weirdness when it comes to seemingly mismatched pigment number and color name, on PWC paints. PWC's cobalt violet light there seems to look and feel similar to the one I have from Rembrandt, and I think it's just common cobalt color issues, they can only be used very lightly with wet and soft-type brush like squirrel/sable otherwise it feels like there's a ton of fillers, also can be quite picky on the paper properties, as I also have cobalt teal light from holbein, though it does feel more pigmented, I still can't recommend using them thickly.

You're welcome! I hope my review was helpful! I do have some Holbein paints, but not many as they're quite pricy here ($7 - $10 for a tiny 5ml tube). I'm not sure these reminded me too much of Holbein, though. Someone in my comments said they were more similar to Winsor & Newton, but I haven't used those so I'm not sure.

Colbalt Violet -- I found the same with the odd texture - sticky? I tried to mix it differently, but it's strange, unlike any I've found.
