Shining in the Darkness / Shining and the Darkness has an odd regional change in titles but otherwise it's a good mechanical starting point for those wanting to get into dungeon crawlers; and yes there will be a video for the shining sequel up before you finish inhaling your 329341655 oxygen molecules
Also I might talk smack about insert my viewer's favourite game but I can assure that I've got no beef and all the games in the video are cool!
Peace

I hesitate between 1 and 2. They are both masterpieces

The Shining Saga has always been the red-headed stepchild of SEGA. For some reason, the higher-ups just don't seem to like it, which is part of why the series has never really had a clearly-definied identity, going from dungeon crawler to turn-based tactics game to action RPG. Shining in the Darkness was made on a shoestring budget because the execs simply weren't interested in allocating much money to it.

Thank you for that highlight of Etrian Odyssey Untold the Mellenium Girl. I always felt like that was a bit of a spiritual successor of Shining in the Darkness.

I've always liked this game. I used to like to go through dungeons crawlers strictly from memory, though, as my free time has has waned as I've gotten older I do employ map making (and maybe even predone) maps to ease me experience a bit. The Saturn exclusive Shining the Holy Ark is a wonderful sequel in the same style (and same world/lore).

Only 91 Subs? I suspect that could increase rapidly.I think you've got something here and quite appreciate the production value of the vid. I would respectfully add. though, that I had a bit of trouble keeping up with the subject matter when confronted with the complexity of your script combined with your unique cadence, having to re-watch portions of the video to grasp what you were saying. Admittedly, it may have been a result of my unfamiliarity with your accent, or I might be thinking slowly tonight. In any case, it is good to have new channels putting out gaming reviews/retrospectives with obvious effort put into them. I'll add "Shining in the Darkness" to my gaming backlog. Best of luck on the growing channel. Cheers.

I used to play this every year. This and Phantasy Star 4. I found a tile you could walk back and forth on to farm mithril. It was my greatest discovery over the years. A modern game in this style with some of today's quality of life would definitely find an audience. Etrian Odyssey filled this void for me for a decade or so - but it seems that franchise is over now, too.

I remember staying home from school while I was sick back when this game first came out and just playing it nonstop. Good memories. Was the time before the internet so you couldn’t just look up a map. Made me feel like I was really exploring a dungeon.

This vid is an absolute treat. Been wanting to start my own channel for a while, and this is exactly what I’ve been trying to do. Very inspiring to see such well written and edited short form content about game design, keep it up

Still my all-time favorite Genesis game. Yes, even more than Phantasy Star IV. I just have a real soft spot for Dungeon Crawlers, and this one is done superbly well, made by Climax Entertainment in their prime.

@@Jordan3DS They're all pretty good, although Shining Force 1 suffers from some severe balance issues and a ton of lost-forever items and characters that basically require a guide to find. Shining Force 2, on the other hand, remains one of my favorite all-time SRPGs.

Cool Video. Heh I finally got around to playing this and like it, about half way through. I have meant to play it for many years. I ended up settling playing it on a Steam SEGA Mega Drive and Genesis Classics because it had a fast forward option which really helps on these old games to grind(other than that I don't care for that steam collection emulator they put out, it just seems way more clunky than a Pi or other emulation, but my pi and mini's do not have a fast forward).

Very cool game, I have beaten it once many years ago, but I think I finished Shining the Holy Ark first, oddly enough only after I have beaten SF3 (the three scenarios) back in 1998/99. From this debut, to SF1, 2 and 3 (where I consider this trilogy to being the apex of the whole series), subsequent games on the franchise didn't held any appeal for me.

I like what you're saying, but some pronunciation and loud music makes it difficult to understand what you're saying in parts and breaks the flow. Please consider investing some time into closed captions? (the auto captions don't do very well)
