I used Shinobi for many years and have recently setup Viseron as my new primary NVR, shinobi is now a backup to it. Viseron is much more basic in terms of features and it uses yaml configuration however it leverages AI person detection via CPU or GPU which makes motion detection far far more accurate, much less junk recordings and much shorter time getting the system tuned as a result

@@try-that frigate looks slick. I just finished getting my cam (test model)(soon to be cams) stable with Shinobi and then wanted to look at a few hrs of recording. Hit fast forward only to get a message about how I need to pay to do that. Fuck that I just put in hrs trying to make their shit stable only to be told I should pay for a wrapper/interface to allow open source players to fast forward? Fuck Shinobi. Grabbed blueiris as a quick comparison. It just boom worked. Frigates going to be what I try next. Not alegic to paying but having used Shinobi 5 years ago and then setting it up again last week... 0 has improved over 5 years. But now for the same half baked open source wrapper they want a monthly income lol...nah

The best option almost always includes a measure of personal preferences. I have tried ZoneMinder, Shinobi, and Frigate. Currently using Frigate and have been satisfied overall. Using a Coral TPU device helps quite a bit with reducing detection processing demands. Frigate can also leverage quicksync for intel cpu's that provide that capability.

@@caioguibr I think the main thing you want to do is make sure to plug in the Coral USB to a 3.0 port (the USB Coral is all I have experience with). My system is using a 12th gen intel i7 and 32GB of memory, but my understanding is that the Coral can be used successfully on a raspberry pi. Finding one is finally getting easier with supply chain issues improving. Just follow the frigate documentation for the configuration and you should be up and running pretty quickly.

Hi, I have a question. I followed your instructions and installed it on Proxmox as a CT, and everything is working fine. But I did make my disk too small and then decided to increase it in Proxmox, but the Shinobi server does not recognize it. Do you have any suggestion?
@AwesomeOpenSource
@AwesomeOpenSource 9 ай бұрын
I've done similar things. Make sure that the Container recognizes not just the increased disk size, but that the partition is also resized. The application really reads the partition, and I've found Proxmox doesn't handle the resizing of a partition, but you have to do that from within the CT or VM OS. Hopefully that will help.

Sure. You can create a VPN and use that for the most secure way to keep your surveillance streams safe. You can, alternatively, use a reverse proxy and give your shinobi server a fully qualified public domian name (like "myvids.mysuperdomain.org"). OF course use https for this only.

When you say create the images, what do you mean? The images that docker pulls down come from dockerhub, and are already created. The image is then used by docker to start a container for Shinobi. as far as i can see they want $60 a year to enable the button to play back at more than 1x speed. Someone should do a video on how shinobi became a cash grab. I can see paying for a lot of things (like object or even motion detection). but holy crap ill screen record my grid streamed through vlc before i pay someone for the ability to playback a video at 2x speed in 2024. If shinobi nvr cant show me basic required functions work with out my wallet theres no reason to belive they will with. Or that more advanced things work. For all i know it helps hide the fact that the video drops 10 min into the 15 min file. It takes a lot to get cameras stable and not burning up all your cpu. Sort of enrages me that i put all that effort to maybe have some stability but after hrs of tinkering i find shinobi nvr has become a cash grab masqurading as open source. kinda gross. off to delete the container.

Can't say I'm a fan of Shinobi. I have reasons. The developer seems to have a chip on his shoulder. I watched him just totally rip apart some guy over on Reddit, then ban him. I did my own research, and then I found there was some truth to what was said. The docker setup isn't great on following some best practices, makes it hard to know if it is secure. For example, no prod branch, only develop, and the MySQL is baked into the Shinobi image rather than kept separate. I would have liked to use a separate MySQL server, not use defaults with a blank password. It just takes a little more trouble than it's worth, IMHO. I'm trying Viseron, Frigate. I really need a dedicated box, no matter what I'm using, because it's hard to pack in GPU acceleration in rack servers (PSU - no 6-12 pin aux connector).
@AwesomeOpenSource
@AwesomeOpenSource 6 ай бұрын
Totally understand. Doesn't sound specifically like it's the software that's the issue, bugt the project lead, which is a shame. I would also like to see the docker version without the MySQL db included, or at least more configurable, but that's the great thing about open source. We can change it if we want to, or put out a bounty to have it changed by someone else, and really kind of do whatever we feel is best.

Shinobi is NOT free. There is a free, open source version, but its 4+ years old and it has issues. I have no idea why you are reviewing this as it is NOT OPEN SOURCE. I recently tried to "upgrade" to the newer software and was willing to buy a license, I entered my card info and all of that and then nothing. I couldn't get my license and that was the end of that. If they can't collect my money without screwups, I'm not going with the paid version which is really the only option. If you don't have a license, certain things are disabled. But they don't tell you exactly what is disabled, so is it not working due to your config or due to items being disabled due to licensing issues. I'm done with this. I am willing to pay $5 per month per machine, but this software is getting worse, not better. So Shinobi is no longer open source. I can't pay for a license and I HATE the new interface. Can it get any busier? How about tabs. Not one giant long list of everything I could possibly choose. The interface sucks. Its extensive, and it sucks. And I'm a programmer used to very complex interfaces. I tried Motioneye and its interface is much cleaner than Shinobi. But it is no longer being developed and its motion detection is like Shinobi. Everything sets it off. I don't need video of grass blowing around. My next attempt will be Frigate and if it looks even reasonable, I will add a Coral USB accelerator ($74) and give that a go. I'm really looking for people and animals. Everything else I can ignore.
@AwesomeOpenSource
@AwesomeOpenSource 2 ай бұрын
This is a fairly old video now. But yes, they have a non-permissive license for sure. They have moved to Gitlab, so maybe you're looking at their old repo for the source. As for the paid licenses, I just don't know. The good news is there are some really great alternatives out there now like Viseron, Frigate, and ZoneMinder is still really powerful; and that's just to name a few.
