The D7/K'tinga class is my favorite Klingon ship design

The American _Forrest Sherman-class_ destroyers I would consider to be comparable to the K'tinga. Both were initially constructed during a Cold War (though one at the waxing years and the other at the waning years), and later in their service life went under an extensive weapons modification and role rearrangement. In the case of the Forrest Sherman, that was the addition of guided missiles & modernized anti-sub weapons, while as you said for the K'tinga it was the addition of the phaser lance.

I remember standing in line for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and an obvious Trekkie was waving around a large Franklin Mint-ish D-7/K't'inga pewter model. Barely under control, he was raving to everyone and no one that, "This is a Kilingon Battlecruiser! It is in the movie!" LOL

Description of the modified K'tinga with the lance phaser reminds me a lot of the mauler ships from Starfleet Battles. Both are siege weapons put on a D7 hull.

The Ktinga remained reasonably effective due to retrofitting. Much like how the BoP is a longliving. Although the BoP is definitely more longrunning. The Vorcha is definitely 1 on 1 the superior vessel. Cost is probably far higher. So makes sense to keep bulking out nrs with the Ktingas.

You know the K'tinga could be retrofitted for all kinds of purposes. You could use it as a kind of assault ship where it brings a couple of battalions of troops on the ground, a kind of specialized armed cargo ship, a science vessel, system patrol ship or even try to make it into a modern light cruiser.

Star fleet Battles and the PC game version, Star Fleet Command, have the D7 carrying 3 x phasers (covering the FX arc) on the command bulb. The FX guys most probably played these games and wanted to pay some homage. In SFB / SFC the mining / star base / planetary defence phaser is the Phaser 4, with the Disrupter 4 being the Klingon / Romulan equivalent. These are deemed too large for starships in the 23rd century, but 24th century technology makes starship carrying possible.

Another great video. If the BBC ever does a documentary on Star Trek Ships of the Line they would be a fool not to have you do it. As for the paint work, I'm guessing each house has slight variations on the trim work just is different feudal lords in the past here on earth had different color uniforms to distinguish their troops from those of other lords. In space it's kind of pointless but still feeds Klingon tradition.

In Lore: Lance Phaser is a Deadly Weapon. Able to cut through shielding and hull in one shot. STO Due to "Balance Reasons": Lance Phaser doesn't even scratch the paint. Me: Grrrrr...spent good money on this ship! I've been Swindled!

I always chalked the red beam down to a laser from the TOS era the the Klingons left on when they were recommissioned because they do quite well in numbers. The phaser Lance idea is a good one and something I never did consider, in my opinion the Lance weapons came into use a few years after DS9 in a post dominion war combat refit across the fleet.

Its probably been over a decade since I've thought about this, but i finally remembered why i originally thought it was just a clueless VFX guy not checking the effects bible (that probably says klingons= green pulses). There was some episode where i think O'Brien was doing some kind of covert op for some reason, and someone had a klingon disrupter pistol, but instead of it firing a little green pulse like every other time, it fired that exact same red beam. Just spent a half hour trying to find the episode, i give up. 1 thing i don't understand about people low balling a late 24th century ktinga is that those same people readily accept that the BOP is just as deadly and effective proportional to its size as it was 100 years earlier. I don't see why the ktinga would be any different. Its certainly not a first rate battlecruiser anymore like it was in 2270, but at its size and with modern systems its at an excellent weight to function as a 2370 destroyer, without having to fall back on being a hollowed out chassis built around a BFG, like we see at least a few of them were converted too if i grant you that was as intentional as you believe. At the tips of each nacelles house recessed disrupter cannons more powerful as a brels, plus 4 to 6 other lighter guns covering other fireing arcs. like the brel, these rudimentary single shot torpedo launchers pale in comparison to the enormous and complex burst fire launchers on newer larger ships, you were on to something there. It would be slower, more durable, and have higher firepower than a BOP, but due to those trade offs it would not be able to perform the same kind of aggressive tactics you can pull off with waves of BOPs, making it more useful as an escort for modern capital ships or the smallest member of a slow rolling battle line.

Actually there is one TNG episode where an old K'Tinga fires green disruptors from its "shoulders" at the Enterprise D. I think that's the only time K'Tinga is seen firing from somewhere other than its mouth or anus (aft torps, TMP)

In the Fleet Operations mod for Star Trek: Armada II, the Ktinga has been repurposed as a mining freighter unable to fight unless you sacrifice its ability to mine and hold resources. Fleet Ops appears to be set in the 2380s onwards (well after the final TNG movie).

The K'tainga was down graded to the light cruiser roll but its weapons systems was constantly up graded over the years .

The Ktinga was the Iowa Refit of the KDF Navy.

Or use the specifications and size parameters of the K'tinga to create a new kind of heavy destroyer/light cruiser that can support the Vor'cha, Neghvar and B'rels in some way.

I could see the conversation going like this: General 1: "We need more ships to fight the Dominion." General 2: "We can't build them fast enough!" General 1: "What about all those old K'Tinga cruisers we have mothballed?" General 2: "Their weapons are under-powered and outdated. They are too slow. They won't stand up in a fight. We will be sending good warriors out to die without chance of victory." General 3: "Why don't we just put a huge gun on them and have them shoot from a distance?" General 2: "Isn't that without honor?" General 1: "We will all be without honor if the Dominion wins and we are all made into slaves. What else?" General 3: "They can still cloak." Deep space 9, the picture in this , the K'tinga ships are firing red beam weapons as mentioned, but were the disrupters or phasers? Also, the beams come out of the torpedoe launcher. Similar to other episodes were phasers fire out of the sensor domes of th he saucer section.

While it is a great theory of the weapon being a powerful phaser Lance there is a slight issue I have with this. We see a kitinga again in rules of engagement during which it is attacking the defiant and a convoy during which it also fires a red beam from the torpedo location. If the weapon was a Lance surly as powerful as that the defiant and the convoy would have been destroyed.

I'm pretty sure the Klingons had reached out to the Federation for help in upgrading their ships and weapons. The federation now uses fighters with micro tech, This tech which help real small ships in the federation to group swarm a large ship like a cruiser and Win. Could of been installed to increase power output in the older warp cells for brief engagements, After all these upgrades helped older federations large ships to stay active mostly in a reserve mold?

Do you think the Lance phaser is the heavy disruptor are the same thing. The reason I asked cuz the class cruiser Vor'cha-Class Attack Cruiser uses a beam powerful or it can be used as a Bolt One-Shot destroying Jem Hadar bug ship also seen destroying the large Klingon bird-of-prey TNG. CNG guidebook says it has disruptors and a heavy disruptor.

Based on the D-7, they are far and away the best Klingon ships.

All this begs a question: if the Klingons could do that with the K'Tinga, what could Starfleet have done with the Mirandas if given the same opportunity as the Klingons?

This might be the wrong place to say this but, regards the phaser lance weapon, There appears to be one equipped on the Constellation class ships. on the bottom of the saucer on the port side. Also to say that the phaser lance was standard equipment on all K'tingas is silly. some may have featured such a weapon yes. The class would not be the same as it was made way back when. her power cores would be (hopefully) newer, and her disruptors, torpedo armaments', shields and sensors would be modernized. Defiant was a small ship, but a powerful one. Why wouldn't the Empire make the K'tinga as mean as they could. This ship has a legend to defend. (Also its my favorite ship in all of Star Trek and in STO my T-5X fleet K'tinga: IKS Intruder is MY SHIP)

You are forgetting about the D6 and D7 .The K'tinga was built around 2275/80.

So is the K'tinga considered a sub-variant of the D7 or is it an entirely different ship design altogether (like a Porsche 911 has Carrera, Targa, Turbo variants)? If so, would you say that the Klingon cruiser in VOY "Prophecy" is a K'tinga?

First things first I would upgraved on that ship is to make the neck thicker so you can't fire like beam and just destroy it because engines probably got better by now so radiation gone down radiation polymer is probably gone more well safer so

I don't know where you get the idea that K'tinga's couldn't be refitted. How long is the B-52 going to last in Service in the real world? Did you see the plans to refit the F-4 Phantom with new engines and electronics. I grant you there would logically be problems with putting old ships back into service, but depending what assumptions you make about future tech, it might be far more practical than you think.

Or DS9 that 23rd century starships we're not only still in operation and still being used but they were being upgraded and increased in their power to be able to cope with the 24th century it was in one of the episodes of DS9 how Miles O'Brien commented that the USS Lakota a excelsior class starship had been upgraded that she had a lot more firepower and who knew what they may have done to the engines to give them more power. We saw plenty of excelsior, Miranda class starships fighting the Dominion in the Dominion war and they seem to be holding their own.... So no it wasn't complete twaddle..... And it was an episode of Voyager that a K' tinga class battlecruiser was found in the Delta quadrant and it attacked Voyager and it was holding its own so get with the program. Just like you making assumptions about the Klingon battlecruiser, you are making assumptions about 23rd century starships which seeing since they were introduced even in the very first episode of The next generation and lasted throughout not only the next-generation but DS9 I would have to say your assumption is twaddle....

I think part of the treaty of alliance the federation had to give the Klingons their face or turret technology and the Klingons had to give the federation katanga bird of prey disruptor technology and they also exchanged torpedoes I am both of them allowed representatives from the other one to tour their ships but Klingon officials was the engineers was allowed to tour the excelsior class and federation worth allowed to tour the continue and the federation was even and the bird of prey and that the Klingons even give the federation a D7 battle cruiser fully functional D7 it's in the Starfleet museum it's got its cloaking device intact it was a late model D7 it was one of the last 50 made and it was not updated to the katanga design

This doesn't make any sense. You would have us believe that the K'tinga is outdated and outgunned compared to other ships on the scene during the war but we have the Excelsior continuing as cruisers. Why on Earth would you think that these ships haven't been upgraded, refit, and iterated upon over the course of a century? "It's disruptors are useless!" Why wouldn't they have been replaced with newer weapons? "It's too slow to hang with smaller ships!" I'm pretty sure that engines can be replaced in refits. "It's tiny!" It's 3 times the size of the Defiant, more than 3 for the B'rel, a ship that's nearly as old but is apparently still useful?

I think its far too interesting to explain this way to chalk it up to vfx mistakes
