Why have you missed out RMS Queen Elizabeth, 1,031 feet long, launched in 1938. Sister ship of the RMS Queen Mary?
@carlosivanwencesaguirre9578
@carlosivanwencesaguirre9578 4 ай бұрын
The biggest is not always the most beautiful, Royal Caribean cruises look like floating shopping centers. On the other hand, Cunard maintains its ship essence regardless of the size. The Queen Mary 2 is the most beautiful boat of all time, the only one in my opinion that surpasses the Olimpic Class and the QM 1 in aesthetics. There is another one just as beautiful but it is from a movie, Poseidon.

She may not be the biggest or fanciest or fastest but I do have a soft spot for The Carpathia. An unremarkable ship in many ways yet it never failed to rise to challenges that were far beyond its original intent. Steaming well in excess of her maximum service speed to rush to Titanics aid, and later taking 3 torpedos and 2 hours to sink in WW1, she served with a distinction I can only admire.

However as I already said she WEIGHED and that means mass not GRT, not tons burthen etc... but weight was 46000 t (metric obviously) which is almost the same as a Typhoon class. Now why do you go around correcting people who didn't even say anything wrong, makes you seem insufferable and a know it all (with no reading comprehension). Did I say GRT? NO I said weighs. As in mass. As in put the damn thing on a scale and see what it weighs. Or more realistically look at the numbers on the bow and stern and that'll tell you what a ship weighs. She was the largest ship ever built at the time of her 1858 launch, and had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without refuelling. Her length of 692 feet (211 m) was surpassed only in 1899 by the 705-foot (215 m) 17,274-gross-ton RMS Oceanic, her gross tonnage of 18,915 was only surpassed in 1901 by the 701-foot (214 m) 20,904-gross-ton RMS Celtic and her 4,000-passenger capacity was surpassed in 1913 by the 4,234-passenger SS Imperator. The RMS Carpathia was actually the ship that rescued the titanic survivors, an yet it met its own demise in 1918. Strange. An I think they were actually built by the same people who built the titanic. 👀 Interesting.

@Haechi [WR] Yea, but none of them are sailing. The only ship that still sails and somewhat resembles this bygone elegance is the Queen Mary 2, but even she is far away from the beauty of the real Ocean Liners and she won't be arround for that much longer. When QM2 is gone, we will never ever see an elegant ship sail again. We will be left with those white, insanely huge, super ugly and deformed floating amusement parks that we call cruise ships.

Aside from the fact she sank, Bradley was typical of smaller self-unloaders. Including the Cort or the Presque Isle or the Paul Tregurtha - or any of the Great Lakes 1,000-footers - might have been more representative. Though I can understand the author's intent in using the Edmund Fitzgerald; among the wider audience, most people's knowledge of Great Lakes shipping begins and ends with Lightfoot's song about the Fitz.
