Twin screw, bow thruster, almost nothing to it the wind is not blowing, but still good. I was captain on Ro/Ro ships for many years. No bow thruster but with twin screws, and we had amazing maneuverability. You have to know your ship and the water / local conditions.

That’s the entrance to the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland. Our sixth grade class took a field trip on a tour boat upriver past five or six kinds of bridges at a time before this industrial area declined during the Rust Belt years. I remember being astonished that any boat larger than the Goodtime Cruise boat could handle those channels.

@louf7178 3 жыл бұрын
I think that's the Eagle Av. lift bridge at Collision Bend with the Carnegie bridge in front and I-90 in the upper left. The Detroit-Superior bridge would be behind the camera. The water churning looks extremely dangerous when one is watching it. This is/was quite the spectacle with all the turns, narrowness and pleasure boats (downstream of this area). I know how they do it, but it is still amazing; I never looked up accidents.
@jdboy9
@jdboy9 3 жыл бұрын
@@louf7178 yeah I think that's correct. I have been tied off on the east bank when these big ships go by. If you are down below in the boat it sounds like static electricity when they go passed. Weirdest thing I've heard.
@louf7178
@louf7178 3 жыл бұрын
@@jdboy9 At first I thought it was the main river outlet with the train lift bridge (and Det-Sup in the background), but it didn't look exactly right. You can see this live (looking out to the lake at www.rockthelake.com/music-box-supper-club-bridge-cam/).
@epistte
@epistte 3 жыл бұрын
@@louf7178 You're correct. I was wrong. The white concrete bridge is the new innerbelt I-90 bridge. The other bridge is Lorain and Carnegie ave. You can barely see the carved pillars on the Carnegie bridge at the top right. You're correct that the Detroit superior would be behind the camera. What tipped me off that is the way the Cuyahoga what the black lift bridge. The ship likely either unloaded taconite in the flats or just picked up salt from the Cargill mine.

Getting through the bridge archway would have been the money shot. If you observe the land vehicles, you'll see how much the time-lapse was sped up. No one could have or would have even contemplated pulling water maneuvers at that speed. There are way too many variables to to do so. I'd be shocked if the ship was doing much more than minimal steerage in such close quarters. Any faster and the Channel Pilot would probably been suspended or lost his credentials. Pilots are paid the big bucks, but they earn every penny.
