Living Big In A Tiny House

Күн бұрын

In this weeks episode, we explore this lovely family home which has been constructed using shipping containers. Named the South Coast Container House, this home has been sustainably constructed using four shipping containers and has also been extended to enclose communal spaces. At 95 square meters (1000 square feet) this home is capable of sleeping 10 people and has been divided into a main 85 square meter home, with an additional 15 square meter sleep-out made from a single 20ft shipping container.

Impressive video. I started a bit late (graduated from my doctorate program at age 30 in 2016 with 170k in school loan debt). Managed to pay off my debt by 2019 and currently have a house and 250k total in investments (combo of profit share, 401k and a brokerage account). I'm not very knowledgeable in investing, so I just have my investing currently in index funds mainly voo, but have been putting a lot into schd the past few months. I dunno if that's the optimal strategy, but psychologically it is very set it and forget it, and prevents me from obsessing over individual stock performance.

Instead of using different brokerage accounts to purchase index funds or individual stock, compare your age(s) and how much time you have estimated till retirement, you can also opt to consulting/working with a fund manager/advisor for an “optimal strategy” to outperform the bear market.

The feature I appreciated the most internally and externally is how the change in floor levels provide extra seating without the need for extra furniture.
@waveman1500
@waveman1500 5 жыл бұрын
I agree that the bench seating along floor levels is the most interesting part of the house. For comfort I think a cushion would be very much appreciated. Sitting on a flat timber floor wouldn't be comfortable for a dinner party. I almost wonder whether this is part of the design, to make the dining table deliberately uncomfortable in order to encourage people to get up and move to the lounge area. The change in floor levels is quite extreme, it almost appears as if it could create safety issues for walking in the dark, or people with less mobility. At 4:59 there is a vertical drop which looks like at least 30-45cm, immediately outside a sliding door to the living room. I would hate to have a guest fall down there by accident and injure themselves! Elderly people may have trouble with those stairs up to the granny flat, aka "guest pod." Ar 12:59 you can see six stairs with a 90 degree turn and no hand rail. It would be very simple to have extended the deck to meet up with the driveway, or perhaps put a ramp in.

Given they are ready to house ten people it still is a tiny footprint per person, ain't it? Could also be a nice way to cheat oneself into more space than exactly tiny would "allow", footprintwise. But still, very cozy architecture and a lot of room out of a small footprint.

My father in law had a bad fall and needed hip surgery, which meant he couldn’t walk upstairs to his bedroom so he slept in the downstairs bedroom. They had a 3 story house, the third floor (the bottom one) was like a studio apartment. Because of him not able to get around most of the house they ended up selling it (they lived there for 25 years) and buying a one story home. And guess what ... he’s still sleeping in a different bedroom from his wife... 😆 .. Makes no sense to me.. 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm a young Pre-Trade Carpentry Student in NZ, and I often get into discussions about tiny/small homes, and alternative building techniques (including shipping containers) with one of my tutors. Just last week, I asked him if a shipping container being insulated from the outside, in order to save precious interior space, was a viable option. He had never even thought or heard of the idea, but was intrigued none the less. Almost as if by magic, this video comes along and mentions that this is EXACTLY what had been done during this build. This channel has time and again proven to be both inspirational and educational; and I'm proud to say that I've been a long time subscriber. Absolutely love the content you guys produce, and seeing the diversity on those whom you visit.

Not in trades, but I'm absolutely fascinated by affordable green homes. (That concept is an oxymoron in SoCal where anything environmental friendly costs 10xs higher than our already outrageous construction costs.) Still, I like to learn about passive home design and smart insulation that protects structures from blistering heat and sun. Off the grid living is also a big interest. Excellent content!!!

The pulling up into the sky and looking down on the area gives so much more visual depth and value. And, you do it so respectfully. Hasn't shipping container design come a long way ? To pass all the stringent regulatory processes/red tape inherent in modern builds shows a seachange in the typically conservative building bureaucracy especially with the strict protocols employed in developed countries like Australia. Finally the younger, greener generation has infiltrated such professional agencies. A decade ago this would have been impossible. This place is stunning and the choice of beautiful timber-framed doors and windows sustainably manufactured really warms up the wonderful industrial aesthetic. Once again you have both produced a brilliant vlog (more like a professional "show") highlighting cutting edge small, sustainable living options. It would have been the icing on the cake to see an off-grid solar array on this lovely home. Thank you for posting. Yes ... more content like this as long as you keep to your "tiny" roots occasionally.

All the negative comments here are absurd. Those who are critical about the homeowner, his mannerisms, the design, the price, the decor etc should just keep scrolling along. This was what the homeowner chose. Everyone has different tastes in what they want - that's what keeps life interesting. If we all built the same home, used the same decor, life would be truly boring. That said, I love the indoor/outdoor design & various levels of this gorgeous container home.

It's funny how with almost every home, with almost every video, I always think: -This has to be in my top 3 Tiny/small houses... AND then I see other and another, almost all of them are great. 😀🙂🤗 This one Is super beautiful. AND my mind was blown away by the amount of thought and consciousness put into this home You are a great, polite and enthusiast interviewer. The owner of the house was a very good talker and it was showed how much he is proud of this home.

Wow, Simon (the owner) seriously knows how to teach. I think he managed to answer questions and conversation stoppers that many of us viewers were thinking while watching this. Thank you for such detailed info! Even though everyone’s ‘style’ is different, we get to learn and take little pieces of what we personally ‘connect’ with and incorporate it into our future design with shipping containers. Bryce, I love your natural enthusiasm. Truly happy to have stumbled on your channel while searching for small space designs. 🤓🤙🏼

I really like how the kids room just had beds, that they had a play room with their things closer to the family area. It really helps with kids nowadays who would rather just hang out in their room all day watching tv, playing video games, etc., it really keeps them out of the room to be out in their home doing things and outside. When my kids were younger the home we lived in had 2 living rooms, one was on their side of the house. I really wanted them to be out of their room more, hanging out with each other doing things, so I set up there living room with craft table and shelves, water paints, bracelet making, many things that they would enjoy doing that wasn’t revolved around a tv.

The simplicity of the bathroom layout is fantastic. It also looks simple to make compared to long days of grout and tile. The kitchen layout is great. I really like how they incorporated the laundry machine in there. The dropped floor in front creating seating all around is a nice touch too.

Thanks for sharing, never heard of the chrome thing so lesson learned. Now, part of this simple lifestyle for me is more financial freedom (need less = need less financial resources = gain more free time to enjoy what matters) so I’m trying to do similar as this person so as beautiful as their home is it’s too expensive overall. Thank you so much for all your videos that have inspired me to start planning for a better, simpler future before my kids get much older.

It's also very clever how the ends of some of the containers were used as doors to storage, like a storage unit. This guy, or whoever from his company is really a good engineer/designer. It appears like the house is mostly windows, structure and insulation enclosing the shipping containers that function as structural pieces to build out the interior. This is by far the nicest shipping container design I've ever seen, plus it looks very efficient and relatively inexpensive. Great video!
