The ONLY thing I wonder about on this knife is the stepped lock bar insert - the steel insert isn't flush with the end of the lock bar. No idea what the thinking was behind that, but It may limit (perhaps only hypothetically) the life of the lock bar. Beautiful work and I'm envious.

I don’t know if this one is but the green thorn one definitely is . The Shiros hold their value and seem to be increasing so it’s a good investment imo . There is no knife worth $1200 . It’s like a name brand car like Ferrari , ya gotta pay if ya want one . Lol $2500 . Taking advantage of our addiction . $600 -$800 is the most any knife should be . There’s just not enough there besides the name which is what costs . Can’t say I blame them because I’d be doing the same thing if the market is paying .

Boy, I just dont know..... I own a T95, and an F3, and came to a similar conclusion in terms of the mechanics. My T95 is lightning fast and very smooth, but my F3 is easily 5x as smooth, and marginally faster yet. I agree the custom division is a new level of sexy but we are looking at a next level price tag for those bells and whistles. Dont get me wrong I love Shiro but they are really swinging for the fence here..... I cant say I blame them however. My2cents.

At some point in anything you will always reach a point of diminishing returns, where no matter what you do the results are less and less noticeable. And at some point with knives you often transfer into luxury. My point on that is when you do anything to a knife that doesn't add to performance. But this kinda thing is no different. Value was and always will be in the eye of the beholder.

unitedgray A screw is only going to thread so far, one cannot be assured of exact placement of the slots. In the watch world, I've heard people say the same thing about the screws in the bezel of the Hublot Big Bang (and variants), but at $10k-$125k, you're sure to realize that you're not buying an inferior quality watch, even if the screws cause OCD overload.
@unitedgray

Jim Skelton There are ways to ensure that the hardware is clocked properly. And for that price tag, it can absolutely be done.
@rickpropas382
@rickpropas382 8 жыл бұрын
+unitedgray Especially on Shiros it is easy to align or clock the slots since the female is round and rotates (that is, it is not keyed). I have a large handful of CDs and some came aligned and some not. I think what we are paying for with them is not more quality, because the sdtandard knives offer plenty of that, but exotic materials and exclusivity.

Awesome knife, Jim. Next step: full custom with DRRBS. I have no doubt that we'll see that vid here in the future. It's a slippery slope. And to those who say "x" isn't worth "y" dollars...who are you to say what "worth it" means for anybody? If a guy wants to buy something that he likes, and he has enough money, then it's "worth it" for that guy - whatever the cost.

I wish we would stop even discussing price tbh. Everything is so relative, and its usually like "If you think its expensive its not for you" , it can be applied to literally anything. Take art for example, Mona lisa is just a piece of paper with some ink on it for 800 million dollars if you put it that way. so yeah the Paper, frame and etc doesnt add upp to that price obviously. Everything is just worth as much as people are willing to pay. that goes with all things in life.

I question how important it really is to have a knife that opens soooo smooth that they need bearings is that the most important aspect of a knife I don't think so. I would think a knifes greatest aspect is it's cutting ability and how well it holds up to long term use and how easy it is to service (clean and lube). The current fad of bearings in knifes IMO is just that a fad, too early to tell how these bearing knives actually used for daily use, pocket carry and such will more than likely need cleaning how are these knives serviced...can they be serviced easily? If at all? Sure I understand sitting around and flicking a knife open is fun (I do it) but is that what a knife is for? So, spending $400 up on a knife because it opens smooth AND fast because it uses bearings is NOT the best reason to justify buying it. I think bearings in knives are a crutch for makers that don't know how to make a smooth opening knife any other way. Face it folding knife lovers most of the cutting you do is opening boxes and cutting cardboard, do you really need the knife to fly open for these chores? If you do daily carry your bearing laden knife (any knife for that matter) you'll find quite a bit of lint in it. I contend that a knife that has bearings will get gummed up much easier and be harder to get back to new like condition. Maybe I'm wrong about this but all the knives I own do get used and do get dirty and need cleaning I just don't know how the bearing knives will do in the long haul. To answer your question...is it worth it? NO
@JimSkeltonKnives
@JimSkeltonKnives 8 жыл бұрын
+nofaithjusthope No one said that the action was the most important thing about a high quality knife. But when you're talking about $2,000+ customs such as this, all of the basics are already covered, so you look into the minutiae to compare one to another... and this is where action plays a key part. The basics like blade grind, grind angle, blade steel, blade centering, lockup, etc aren't generally going to be a factor (or an issue) in knives of this level, so performance and durability are already there. When one opens effortlessly (which is the paramount reason for wanting a flipper to begin with), and one may not feel quite the same... there are notes to be made.How a door closes on your car isn't the reason for buying it, but once you've owned a Mercedes and experienced that very particular feel and sound as the door closes.. you compare that to other cars in the same class and use it as a differentiating factor. As far as bearings, that's merely a personal choice, but most tactical knives do use them. They require only a tiny bit more maintenance if the knife is well-used, and that merely involves blasting it out with WD40 (to clean, WD40 is not a lubricant), then blasting it with compressed air. Once done, most knives won't need to be disassembled. In severe cases, sure... but I also break down my washer knives to clean them too. Some of the finest knives, made by the finest (legendary) makers use bearings.
@nofaithjusthope8714
@nofaithjusthope8714 8 жыл бұрын
+Jim Skelton I agree in part, many high end makers are using bearings, I don't agree that using them makes them better more complex yes better though not really IMO. As I said I think it's more of a fad and everyone wants bearings right now. Maybe it's here to stay I don't know but I think it"s a weak point and not something that makes knives more reliable/stronger, just the opposite IMO. The knife you're reviewing here in my opinion is way over priced I mean what is so special about a slab of CF and one of titanium CNC machined a couple custom screws not much else. For that price range I would expect to see a whole lot of custom work and really exotic materials I just don't see it here. The way a knife opens is nice but not as important as other aspects of a custom knife, I would expect ALL knifes in this price range to be great in the smoothness of opening that should go without saying. The factors that (in my mind) that would make it worth $2000 would and should be more exotic materials and custom touches I just don't see that in this knife. It's basically a $2000 tactical folder. I would much rather have say 2 Allen Elishewitz customs than one of these for that price. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this.

+nofaithjusthope The reason he sees value in it is because he has a love for the hobby and the build quality and the status. It's the same reason you go out and buy a Rolex or Breitling. If you've never had a Rolex on your wrist it's going to be pretty fucking hard to describe to you how it's going to feel. When you have someone who is collecting 2000 dollar custom knives it's pointless going on a mini KZfaq rant on what you perceive as overpriced because nobody values an opinion of somebody who has never personally handled or owned a piece like this.
@blairtaylor9552
@blairtaylor9552 7 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely correct. Flippers with ball bearings are just the latest fad for people who mostly value having a show toy, and are not concerned with having an actual working knife that will survive through much harder use. I'm a little tired of solid titanium too. And of frame locks. They're ugly- but they're cheaper and easier to manufacture than nice looking knives with liners and handle scales. I do love the clean lines of the Shirogorovs' though. My pick would be an: F3 liner lock, with G10 scales/titanium liners (prefer it over CF), oiled bronze washers, and S35VN or M390 steel. In the real world, should cost around $300-$350. But then, my Fantoni's have all the same stuff for around $225, and the machining is first rate. The handle scales aren't as nicely contoured, but you know what, I could easily do a little rounding off in an afternoon, and feel like I just saved myself $2000. Also MUCH more rewarding than anything off-the-shelf, no matter the material or manufacture! :-)

Jim,you need to be more reserved in your praises. You seem to be equally impressed with most of the knives that you review. Words lose meaning when you overuse them. In my opinion, shirogorovs are grossly overpriced, it doesn't cost the same in Russia to run a business as it would in the US, but he charges more for his mid tech knives more than most American makers. Also their warranty only covers the original owner and is not transferred with the knife after resale. The quality and construction is not nearly as good as the cheaper sebenza or hinderer. Shirogorovs tend to fail often too.
@JimSkeltonKnives
@JimSkeltonKnives 9 жыл бұрын
I don't even know where to begin with this. Firstly, you clearly haven't watched my Frequently Asked Questions videos. This is a knife that I bought, after much deliberation... of course I like it. I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't. I very rarely end up receiving a knife that's less than I expected it to be. Should I start spending $2,000+ on things that I know beforehand that I will hate? Secondly, your assumption about the price is in error. They are not grossly overpriced by the maker. They are grossly overpriced by the one single North American distributor, thus affecting the secondary market. A $300 knife in Russia will be $850+ when bought in North America and anywhere from $1,000+$1500 on the secondary market. You are correct that the warranty is crap, but how many really buy based on warranty, or have ever had to rely on one? If you think a Sebenza can even hold a candle to a Custom Division... you have never held a Custom Division. If you're comparing a Sebby to a midtech Shiro, you're still off. Shiros had failure issues a couple of years ago, no more. Your info is severely outdated.

In Russia, you can buy a midtech Hati (standard Hati) like I used to own (video was uploaded early last year) for about $250-$300. In the US they went for $550. Then due to one person whom I will not mention, the prices shot up to over $800. Thanks to that, the secondary market was pushed up to around $1200-$1500 for a Hati. Mod 95T goes for more. Again, those are the standard, Midtechs. The customs are of course far more expensive, but the quality and action are undeniably great.

I love when people talk out of their ass. I never said this was a one-off or something unattainable. Rare, yes, but that is true for most custom division. And back when I got this, unless you lived in Russia, there was only one dealer to get them from... and he was hoarding them as well as jacking up the prices. Now over the last year, it's quite a bit easier to get them.

MRRBS= multi row roller bearings system. No custom division model to date has that system. That's only on full customs. I call full of shit.

One day, not far from now, the bubble around high-tech flippers will burst, people will realize, they are not worth nearly as much as they are selling for and the collectors won´t be happy. It´s an awesome blade, but not for the price of an OK used car...

Damn son- if you think you can get an OK used car for 1000 bucks Jims videos are definitely not for you.

so much money for a knife, that's crazy there are a lot of clones out with the same quality, just a different steel, but quality is the same for just 80$ ^^

LMAO. Yeahhhhh. Same quality. Which is why Rolex stopped making watches, because the $100 knockoffs are the same quality. If you truly believe this, please don't watch my videos or comment here anymore.

+Jim Skelton there is a difference yeah, but it's not like heaven and hell. have you ever ordered one of the T95 Clones? They look the almost the same, expect the blade steel, but they have also ball bearings and they work ;-) Not everyone is a millionaire, so why are you so negative against that?

+hanf022 I don't care how much or how little someone spends on a knife. I don't make anyone feel bad for spending less, but I won't let people think that clones are just as good as the original. That's pure BS. There IS a world of difference, sorry if you don't see it. Also, I can't support people stealing designs from hard working knifemakers (who already have it rough... they won't be millionaires), and knock off their designs. It's bullshit and needs to stop. Everyone who buys a clone makes it harder for the real makers to make the real knives.
