I thought you weren't supposed to touch them with your index fingers?

you can hold them in your hand with all fingers touching them i.e. when you pick up your mala or are just carrying it in your hand. But you cannot use it during mantra menditation, as then you are activating the beads with a mantra and that energy transmits to the beads, and it should not be channeled through your index finger, the fire finger, but through your thumb and middle finger. earth and sky fingers.
