People are ragging on Daniel for getting the catching the Snitch bit wrong but he's just some kid who played another kid and then got the fuck out of there. Stephen on the other hand narrated _all_ of the Harry Potter books and really should know better.

Audiobook narration is pretty much done by sitting down in front of an autocue and just running straight through in one sitting, maybe with a few retakes here and there. You just go into autopilot and none of it sinks in.

Daniel said it wrong about qudditch...I am sure i spelled it wrong, long time I seen the movies, but much more recently listened too all the books read by stephen. I believe, the snitch is only worth 150 points, I forget which exactly match it was... but Harry had to wait catching the snitch, but this I belive was because of the total score, to win the cup... I need to read the books again, read most of them as kid, listened to Stephen about 1 or 2 years ago, and wish to start reading it, buy books first in english since I am norwegian, and thinks the original language is better.
@dudesayingthings Жыл бұрын
It was the quidditch cup final in the third book, IIRC. Gryffindor needed to score a certain number of points before Harry caught the snitch because of how the league table worked out that year.
@mayureshutpat7312 Жыл бұрын
@@dudesayingthings Yes, Gryffondor were playing their archenemy Slytherin, and they needed a win by 60 points or more to win the cup because Slytherin was leading the points table by 50 points if I remember right. If they won by a less margine than that, they would win the match but lose the cup. Also, in the Quidditch World Cup 1994 final between Ireland and Bulgaria, Irish were leading by 160 points, and then Bulgarian seeker Viktor Krum caught the snitch so that final score made Ireland lead by 10 points, so even though the Bulgarian seeker caught the snitch, Ireland won by points.

I took the rule to mean “it’s generally i before e, unless it’s after c in which case it’s generally e before i” which his interesting fact doesn’t actually rebut. I mean, I didn’t care for the rule *anyway*, but still
@madeleine615093 жыл бұрын
Their point was that the exceptions *outnumber* the cases where the rule is actually correct. Even saying "generally" would be incorrect, as that would imply that the majority of cases are spelt that way (which they are not). You wouldn't say "generally, human beings do not have cartilage in their ears". There are probably people who do not have any as part of a medical condition, but it is in no way "generally" the case when the number of people who have cartilage in their ears far outnumbers the people who do not. There are 923 cases which break JUST the "except after c" part of the rule, and that's not even including words which just break the i before e part. their, weird, deity, height, seizure, forfeit, albeit, a/theist, weiner, being, caffeine and protein... That's just to name a few common ones (and which don't fall under the "eɪ" exception often added on more recently). As Stephen said, there are allegedly 21x the number of words which break the rule than the number which conform to it.

The blade retracts into the block that it's hanging from. It's pushed back by the piece of wood over Dan's neck. When he sets up the fake head eludes me. I think it was a matter of audience distraction and putting the camera on Stephen or something. I've seen a version where the fake head is inserted immediately, but they showed Dan's face making expressions. Unless they added that later with editing?
@szczurek27252 жыл бұрын
@@beenaplumber8379 but where does his real head goes? That's what puzzles me the most.
@beenaplumber83792 жыл бұрын
@@szczurek2725 I'm not certain how or when they switched the head, but I saw Alice Cooper do this live, and I was at an angle where I could see everything. (I didn't want to see how he did it though - his tricks are an awesome part of his show. That's just where I was in the audience.) As I recall, he put the fake head in place when it looked like he was putting his own head in. He was actually leaning over a bench with his head behind the blade and block, and from a proper angle, it would have looked real to me. He did it with his head facing the audience, like Dan did in this episode, so I suspect it was similar. The difference here is they show Dan's real head smiling and moving after it's in place. That is what I suspect they added later in editing. I don't think the audience saw that live. I think he put the fake head in place and moved it around a bit with his hands, that's all. (The movements just before the blade drops are all stiff and phony.) But I don't know. I only saw how Alice Cooper did it, and it might not be the same mechanism. The audience reaction tells me it was a good trick in person, from their perspective (which isn't close-up). Maybe the cameras made it too obvious, so they added some editing for our benefit. It's a disappointing thought because magicians usually don't resort to camera tricks, but in the end, it got us all wondering, the audience was shocked, and we were all entertained, so... ok! We got to see Harry Potter become eligible for the Headless Hunt!

@davidr27044 жыл бұрын
It is possible to say "percent proof" (which is American-style proof) as opposed to traditional proof. Liquor proof was invented by the British and was originally based on the result of an indirect test, because equipment to directly measure percentage of alcohol was [expensive/not invented yet/not portable/whatever]. The more modern American "proof" looks silly at first because it's percent alcohol multiplied by 2 - why wouldn't you just state the percentage and be done with it? But percentage times 2 gives an answer that is close-ish to the result of the original British proof test. Customers would have complained and asked stupid questions if their liquor bottle said "80 proof" last week and "40%" this week, and we all know that alcohol customers in particular are REALLY touchy about thinking they're being cheated.

Lee is brilliant, but QI really isn't his natural habitat (ironic because he's super intelligent, genuinely, and usually uses a persona) making a lot of his comedy not land. He's similar to Sean Lock, another highly talented panellist who struggled on this show. I assume it's because they were so used to being team captains of their own goofier shows in which numerous professional comedians will "battle" to get the funniest and fastest punchline they can out of a scenario, meaning those juggling silliness with a quick-wit automatically thrive. Unfortunately, that sort of stuff is FAR less suited to the QI format, and so their default TV shtick here just makes them seem a bit buffoonish. Meanwhile David Mitchell, who is sharp but seems to usually take a pause before he tells a joke, often landing on the followup punchline, fits in like a dream!

It just says that if there is no "c", you cannot have "e" before "i". The rule does not say anything about which option is allowed after "c". So the most reasonable assumption would be that both are allowed. As such, "species" does not break the rule.

Lee is very sophisticated. Remember what John Cleese said: The most effective way to irritate someone is to make it appear unintentional. Everything you write off as stupid is a deliberate setup. And every complaint from Stephen drives the gag on. You might not understand this kind of comic interaction, but your lack of understanding doesn't mean Lee is stupid. Lee and Stephen are working the live audience together, as a team, and they respond!

FFS, Lee, you're not funny regardless of how many times you scream your lame jokes.
