The library is pretty legendary in my mind, people don't realize how many quality games there were. So I was glad to do it even if the amount of work involved was pretty legendary too. But I'm glad I got through it and really happy with the final result. I do hope it's something people can come back to in the future whenever they need it or want to discover new games.

@@ShmupJunkie Just a question (and no offense) but why are so many captures of these games jerky and lagging? It seems to be giving a poor impression of these titles by making the TG16 look like a chopfest machine. (As a simple first example is Aeroblasters - a game I personally owned - in your footage it lags like crazy - which the real game did not - then it speeds up for a moment and looks normal then goes choppy again. Another random example is Final Soldier where it runs choppy in some clips then smooth it other clips.) Perhaps you captured them at the wrong FPS or using the wrong Hrz for capture? Like running a 50Hrz signal into a 60Hrz capture? Or maybe you ran them on an emulator on the same PC as the capture card? Thus it was not powerfully enough to do both at the same time (Emulate & Capture)? I might also add that not all of the games shown do this - some actually play smoothly. So maybe you had the settings on your capture card set lower near the beginning of your capture fest but then changed it to a higher bit rate or FPS rate for the later captures?? Thanks for the monumental effort either way.

@@retrocatalog No it’s cool I’m ok with missing some of the hidden shooters. There’s actually a bunch and at some point I decided it wouldn’t work here to try and show every one. Some aren’t great and too basic or janky. So I showed the few really cool ones I knew about. I didn’t show twin bee returns either. @@ShmupJunkie Well fair play to you seeing it through dude. Mate you really are nailing this KZfaq shizzle. Without blowing too much smoke up your arse, you are a genuine celeb in the making (I'm guessing you've had experience on stage in bands etc. as you've clearly thought about "the show", as opposed to just putting a vid up). If SHMUPS were more popular it'd be an easy road for you, but that said you'll be the go-to man on SHMUPS if these vids keep coming. So it may be a niche market, but who cares when it's your passion. Hope you go a Megadrive one after the PC Engine one (even if you break it down into smaller parts). If you get your name even more established, you could become the go-to man for new-release SHMUP reviews.

This was a fantastic video dude. It takes a lot out of a person to make a video this long and of this caliber and it totally paid off. The video was obviously made with a lot of love for the PC Engine (which I do know from your previous videos lol) and is a great tool for people to learn more about much more obscure games on the PC Engine that don't have a lot of good coverage. The fact that you even had the gull to play through all of these games is crazy enough but this video is just absolute S Tier in my opinion. You've easily become one of my new favorite KZfaqrs and I can't to see what great stuff you have in store in the future!

That's awesome to hear, I'm glad you're getting so much out of it and may again. Watching it during editing I did feel it had a nice pace and didn't linger on most games too long except a few I gushed over. It just keeps moving along and I found myself just kind of relaxing and enjoying game after game too haha. I really do hope it continues to get enjoyed that way over the years. Not many on YT have the attention span to watch more than 2min of it, but the remaining 10-15% that stick around will get a lot out of it.

Your hardware collection is astonishing, impressive, awesome, incredible, out of this world !... I suffer from lack of adjectives to describe how much love you put into every video you make!. I had to view the entire video in four different timeframes because of its lenght but it's the one and only video that compresses and includes every shooter made for this magnificient (and many times underrated) system. I never realised just how many early shmups had such amazing guitar-based soundtracks! I grew up with 8-bit computers and the Megadrive, so the PCE's library was a mystery to me. I do love chip-tune music, but shmups work so well with wailing guitar solos and chunky riffs! Absolutely epic video Mr Junkie, thank you! I really like the fact that, even with the terrible games, you mainly focus on the positives. It's refreshing in this day and age of negativity. This is one video I'll definitely rewatch time and time again!

Being the first ever CD gaming console, they really did go all out to make the music in games memorable. It was early and exciting. Even bad games had some good music. Download 2 had some really great guitar work and not a game many know so I took the extra time to highlight some of it's tracks here. Some games are so bad I can't help but warn people to stay away, but overall, it's hard for me to hate on games in general unless it's for fun or tongue in cheek. Too much nostalgia for them.

It warms my heart to know I helped expose you to a new set of killer games you can find and enjoy now. Collecting all of them is quite a herculean task and some are extremely expensive, so please don't embark on that journey without expecting an extreme cost to go along with it. I got many of the games when they were much less expensive. In terms of simply trying the games and enjoying them, the SSDS3 flash cart plays pretty much everything and works with real hardware, so it's a great way to play them all. The MiSTer is also excellent for PC Engine and plays every single game.

This video makes me so happy SJ, I'll come back and watch it in parts again and again! I really can't imagine that this could be done any better (the editing, the video & music footage, what you choose to highlight for each game, your unflagging positive vibe throughout a 3 hr plus video...). This combination of great game genre with its best console in such a complete, thoughtful, circumspect treatment of its library is just the kind of resource we need on KZfaq. I hope you feel that all the time you spent was worth it ... you must have had fun capturing the footage, but all that editing! ... man, we are super-grateful for your tireless effort. Going to leave you a quick DM over on Patreon with some other thoughts ... but this video makes me wish other simpatico experts like you would make a similar video about all fighters on Saturn, or all jrpgs on PS1, or all 3D-platformers on PS1/PS2. I study old games as a hobby, but I love doing it systematically like this, and playing as many as I can -- really helps you appreciate "the big picture" -- in this case, both for where PCE's variety places it at the pinnacle of the shooter genre, and for what games were capable of back then. I love a lot of modern games today -- but in so many genres, 90s were the Golden Age!

Thank you so much for the awesome comment and sorry for the delay, as I am still catching up. I did see your message on Patreon too and will hit you up there next chance I get. This is a video I've wanted to make since I started this channel so I'm really happy I was able to finally make it happen. While I did capture a lot of gameplay myself, it's just too massive to do alone, so I'm thankful to some friends and also a couple other channels that were nice enough to let me use some of theirs for games I didn't have to recapture again myself. But the editing was definitely a huge undertaking, so it was just one game at a time. I enjoyed the process and found it therapeutic during a time where I really needed something to absorb myself in I could enjoy. And now that it's done I'm thankful it's being enjoyed. I sure hope it continues to be over the years as an entertaining reference for others to discover the library.

@@ShmupJunkie There is an unexplainable magic unique to each console, at least before the PS3. Older hardware especially infuses a certain flavor into it's games. The TG16 makes me feel so fuzzy inside. Crazy thing is this console magic makes me love the bad Turbo/PCE games almost as much as the great games. Lol somehow the bad games are more fun than other consoles, maybe because the library is not fluttered with hundreds of western licensed crapware. Another interesting thing about bad PCE games is that they often have great music too. PCE has to have the highest ratio of amazing soundtracks, as if it was the main priority for developers.

Great job! The PC Engine has so many great shooters. Compared to the MD and SFC the sheer number of top notch shooters on the PCE wins easily. I only wish a full game was made of the Force Gear mini-game. The graphics are amazing for the PCE. Again, great job and congrats on the video!
@ShmupJunkie

Thank you. And yes Force Gear is on the level you expect from Konami, especially given it was a hidden game within another game. Almost like they just wanted to try their hand at a caravan mode. I love all the consoles that generation and it would be hard to give up any of my favorites on each of them. But I definitely won't forget all the amazing games I played then on the PCE and how I never ran out of new shooters to try. I'll always remember looking forward to renting a new one on weekends and trying to finish it before it had to be returned.

mega drive has some pretty killer ones best on both systems are comparable imo very few games on pce are as robust as TFIV, MUSHA, GleyLancer, etc.. Lords of Thunder kicks ass, plus Spriggan is very close to MUSHA graphically Sapphire is mix of ugly and pretty, more like a tech demo also impressed by Air Zonk and Magical Chase

@@jaymorrison8419 The Mega Drive has a lot of good shooters too so it's close. I disagree on Sapphire though. Love that game. Amazing graphics, two players and an amazing soundtrack by T's Music. One of the things I most love is how videos like this that give history, commentary, and visuals + music allow you to see if a game might be more your style. Like Atomic Robo Kid... not my game. But Avenger looks REALLY interesting since I'm a fan of games like Under Defeat and Twin Cobra. It looks like an early game of the style of Under Defeat with fantastic music. I would never have ever heard of this game except for this video.
@ShmupJunkie
@ShmupJunkie 2 жыл бұрын
And it's not a bad game either. Music is good though sound effects can be grating like I mentioned. But if you're expectations aren't too high you'll have a decent time with it. Will be curious what you thought of it once you do play it at some point.

Thanks for this! I've been meaning to put this into Excel and link it, but I'm just so overwhelmed with new work and videos I couldn't get back to it. Appreciate you and others putting this up. It's funny how opinions can change, and even games I've played forever I would rate differently. Just months later after making this, there's a few I would rate just a bit higher, and a couple a bit lower. It all depends on one's mood that day haha.

One of the best fucking reviews I have ever seen, just to have the balls to review the entire STG library of PCE is no easy feet, but of course, with you having Junkie in the game, why would anybody expect anything less from you? Just taking a whole month do get this video done, with all the mini-reviews is admirable and shows how much you care for the console.

Thanks man. At first, I was trying to keep it short at 30sec per game so it wasn't crazy long, but I just couldn't do it. It wasn't doing the games justice, so I said screw it. I played shmups on various consoles throughout my childhood, many on the Atari 2600 (e.g. River Raid), Amiga, Master System (Fantasy Zone 1 and 2, R-Type among them) and the NES (Life Force!). When I got older, I started focusing on other types of games. After so many years, my tastes in gaming are changing and I want to experience all the tons of good shmups I haven't yet experienced. Your channel seems to be the perfect starting point to orient myself and help rekindle my interest, I appreciate what you do and how thoroughly you do it!
