Giga Wing games are awesome and were actually developed by Takumi, a developer which included former Toaplan staff. They not only made Giga Wing 1-3, but also Mars Matrix and they finished the sequel to Twin Cobra. Out of all the development teams that were born from Toaplan’s end, Takumi is my favorite.

Thanks! Aside from talking about the technical details and features, I really wanted to focus on the games themselves. As that’s really what it’s all about. So I’m glad you enjoyed it. I did a similar format to this for a video called Best Arcade Exclusive games. If you enjoyed this one I think you’d really like that one too. Especially highlighting some awesome arcade only games many have never heard of.

This is by far my favorite review of Capcom Arcade Stadium. It def hit on the topics I'm personally interested in. It kind of has that technical "MLIG" vibe, and I truly mean that as a compliment! Great job man. I can tell this was a ton of hard work to pull together, and it shows.

that was really in depth, and your narration just made me love the games even more than I already did, I also appreciate the details about the input lag, that helped a lot. I think you are the only person on earth who has pointed out the lack of online multiplayer of those 7 common games between the Arcade Stadium and the Street fighter + Beat em up collections, that held me back at first when I saw but then I realized it was amazing even when played locally I seriously hope they add online in the future
@ShmupJunkie

Really? The lack of multiplayer seems so obvious and needed for a collection like this, you'd think it would be near the top of any list. How do you have versus SF games and beat em ups without being able to play online. Hopefully once it goes multiplatform we will see. If they're serious about the collection that has to be priority in this day and age. I'm really glad you enjoyed the vid and I had fun kind of reminiscing about some of these games while making it.

I take what we had here in the US for granted and don’t always think about how many other countries didn’t get that benefit. Consoles and clones were the systems most people grew up with and arcade machines were very rare or not available. That’s something I’d love to dive into with more detail in a future video when it’s the right opportunity. That makes collections like these even more important.

That place is arcade heaven. Lots of great games and obscure stuff only there. Had lots of fun with dariusburst there. Only minor disappointment is that some cabinets are multi game or have lower quality reproductions of marquees or general presentation that's not authentic to the original. But with how packed that place is with games and how many do look and play great its a nitpick.

The Dariusburst cabinet is sick! My biggest disappointment is that some of the monitors badly need cap replacements. I played Progear there and it was so dark and badly washed out because of the monitor's issues. Still, I wibt complain. It's probably hard to keep a business like that running. Especially now. Could the stuttering be due to relatively accurate emulation of arcade machines which often ran at oddball framerates like Dodonpachi or Mortal Kombat? On a fixed 60Hz display you can either speed those games up or duplicate frames every now and then. Neither choice is ideal, but there's very little that can be done about it.
@yellowblanka6058
@yellowblanka6058 3 жыл бұрын
@@ingobauer6144 I don't think so - MAME prides itself on accurate emulation, and I've played 1943/MK etc. in later versions and they don't stutter like this. Though, you might be half right in that the more accurate emulation might be too much for the ~1 Ghz CPU in the Switch (clocked lower than even Raspberry Pi, though not sure how IPC compares) causing the periodic dropped frames. I'd be curious to see if this issue occurs in the PS4/PC etc. versions.

If you really liked this one and you have any passing interest in shmups, check out another video I did called Amazing Shoot Em Ups of the 80s and 90s. I think you would really like it, as the whole video has the same feel as the intro to this one with the arcades and is one of my favorite I've done. Another great video. The first time I went on holiday was to France in '87, the Ferry also had an arcade with a few cabineys. The two I played were R-Type and Bionic Commando. Such an amazing feeling to be able to wander the ship on your own and play arcade games that at that time I hardly ever saw. I remember playing R-Type for about an hour, my focus on the screen had caused me not to notice the ships motion. When I went out on deck I was violently sick. As nobody was around I ran off and walked a lap of the ship. When I came back to the arcade entrance my vomit was still on the floor and I'll never forget a man walking by with his young daughter being very vocal about the "filthy individual " that had caused the mess. I was obsessed with games like Forgotten Worlds and Ghouls and Ghosts as a kid, so having them in the palm of my hands with 30 other Capcom classics was too good to pass up. Sure the emulation isn't 100% perfect, and titles like Willow, AvP and Darkstalkers are missing, but what's here is phenomenal. Not only that, I'm always happy to see the history of some of the best that arcades had to offer get its due in the 21st Century. I didn't expect much more from the capcom arcade stadium than to be their version of those bare bones arcade archives releases. I'm glad after seeing this and Electric Underground's video about it though that this is actually a pretty great release just short of the more detailed m2 releases. Decided to pick it up and have been having a great time today playing Progear and 19xx!

Yeah there is nothing bare bones about it. Certainly it's not like the M2 stuff in terms of how refined the emulation work is, so there is a lot people are complaining about, but it's miles ahead of most other simple collections. And it's priced at pretty much a bargain. Progear and 19XX have been my two new favs on there along with Varth on the second bundle. All brilliant games to me so far.

Thanks I'm glad you did enjoy it. One thing I learned is that the default difficulty on some (not all) of these Capcom games in the collection are cranked too high somehow. So it's even harder than many of us would have played them in the arcade unless the operator cranked them. That could be why Legendary Wings felt so insane to play.

I had the same experience playing Legendary Wings arcade for the first time yesterday. I played the NES version so much as a kid, that it was a huge shock once the side scrolling kicked in and the winged angel is... walking slowly? Such a weird choice especially for typical arcade pacing.

I've always found myself enjoying 1944 quite a bit; can't quite place my finger on why. I played it probably close to ten years ago now at a convention and found myself drawn in. I've definitely been giving it more than just the one-and-done recommended here, but that's a matter of opinion :P Excellent video as always. I wish more companies would put out dedicated collections from their arcade backlog like this.

I think had I played it first or in a different order I may not have been as hard on it, as it's not a bad game. It was just hard to get into after how fast paced and fun 19XX was, it felt like going backwards. Even 1941 was very fun and fast paced that way. But you are not alone, I've run into a good few people that got a lot of fun out of 1944, it was only a one and done for me. Although at some point I will play it again and see what else I can suss out of it. It's definitely just my opinion. Like I mentioned in the video, if you love one of these games or have nostalgia for it, who cares what I think. Even with legendary wings haha

That's a good point and very possible, as I noticed it with multiple scrolling games. That's the kind of thing M2 would take the time to iron out and I can see others not. Although there are all kinds of issues like that, it's bargain basement pricing at $15 for 10 games, so I can understand. If the release does well, I do hope Capcom can put some more money into development and get those kinds of things patched out, as they have done with other releases. My bigger gripe was the auto fire not working right as that's kind of important for a lot of games.

I almost forgot, while Eco-fighters was obviously a critique of the military industrial complex 'war lobbies' the fact that Capcom called the main antagonist "Goyulk" where the name is spelt Goyulk.k.k was pretty out there by them, considering it translates to Goy (derogatory term for caucasians as 'Cattle') and the K.K.K Capcom's international staff must've been out to lunch that day.lol

What I did dislike is the forward/rewind being default mapped to the shoulders. I was pressing them by accident sometimes and screening myself up. So I just disabled them completely in the menu. Are you not able to get any button on your other pads or stick to add credits? I know others who are playing these games with their arcade stick.

@@ShmupJunkie I hadn't thought about trying to remap game by game. Will actually give this a shot. The Hori Fc looks pretty sweet. I have the Saturn retro bit coming in tomorrow so I will check that out dpad wise, otherwise I will see what I can do about the arcade stick. A shame about them mapping forward rewind to the shoulder buttons given the nature of that pad. Do find them interesting given the games though. You can actually slow down game play to more quickly learn less intuitive bullet patterns. Please keep making these videos though - between the zaniness and your attention to detail they are an absolute joy to pour through, especially for us shmuppers (but I imagine others interested in all games too)!!

Back when I made this review you couldn't buy them individually, so these packs were the only way. I'm glad they added it and figured it was only a matter of time. Glad you found me with this video and are enjoying some others. And I'm glad they've continued to update and improve this collection. My only wish is they'd add an online coop or pvp, as that's a big miss in terms of building a community around the collection. But no complaints on the games themselves.

@@ShmupJunkie For sure it would be really great if they added the titles you mention 🤞; I was thinking about it and came to realize that, a title like AvP would be really hard to re-release because of licence issues, but it would be awesome. Great job! I really like Varth. The Capcom Collection disc lives in my OG XBOX cuz of Varth. I’ve only ever played it on a CRT. Most of the games can be bought on the Microsoft store these days individually. I bought a bunch on sale for $1.50 CAD awhile back. 19xx is the best in the series but it’s not like 1944 is bad. It’s the 2nd best in the series. I like it well enough. I barely played GigaWing. That reflective shield system I’m used to in Star Soldier: VE. Everytime I go to play GigaWing I end up clicking on ProGear instead.

I actually didn't know people dump on it. It wasn't bad either, just felt like a step back after how rad 19XX was. Excellent video, and a great way to pass the afternoon while I should be working :p. I agree with most of what you say, except for 1944. I love it! I have an Arcade 1up Final Fight cab, which includes 1944 (and Strider) and playing it with the volume on full is quite an experience. But even I have to admit that it's at least 3 stages too long. But here's something I want to thank you for: as a massive fan of 1944 and 19XX (God, how I love the sunset level in the shipyard!), I had NO IDEA that 1941 was made after 1943. I just assumed it was made before 1942 and hence probably quite a bit too old-school for me. It looks fantastic. I'll be putting some hours into that in the near future!
@ShmupJunkie

I'm pretty aware that a lot of folks don't share my view on 1944 and maybe if I had played it in arcades I would have more nostalgia for it. It was just a big difference going to that from 19XX as I loved that one so much. I think it's preference honestly as I am just not as into the realistic shmups as much. Also why I like 1941 so much as it's very atypical 1940s series and was the first game to step away from trying to be realistic. Bouncing off the walls and spinning around is just an interesting concept and you can immediately tell the game isn't taking itself seriously and just wants to be a good time. I think you will enjoy it and would love to hear what you thought once you do play it a bit.

Loved the video as always. Couple of thoughts that came to mind while watching it a) I recommend setting Forgotten Worlds as a twin stick shooter, just switch the shoot button to one of the triggers and you are good to go as the right stick by default works as the rotation control (it doesn't rotate instantly as in normal twin stick shooters, but it's better than using the shoulder buttons IMO b) for most of the older games, I recommend getting Capcom Arcade Cabinet collection if you have 360/XBone/SeriesS/X as that is by M2 and has stellar emulation

Good to know on the older collection, as I do have a 360. Though it's modded so I can play japanese games, so if it's online I can't do it. I've had a couple others also tell me there was an analog option for Forgotten Worlds and I'm going to try that next. It's gotta be better than the buttons for sure. I didn't mind on the home ports as much but here it feels like a bridge too far playing that way ahah.

The algorithm seems to have been good to me so I am definitely not complaining about it, and glad you found the channel. I do mostly focus on various shmups, but I am always approaching it from a more nostalgic and mainstream pov. In the hope that others can appreciate them instead of seeing them as such a niche and impossibly difficult genre. It wasn't always that way during those early years and I try to channel that, although I admit they were always hard due to their arcade roots. That's never changed. But it's possible to enjoy them quite a bit without being awesome at them when there are good training and save features added like on this collection.

@@ShmupJunkie Yes, I was technically the Design Director for Strider, which normally means design and direction (like it says on the tin), but in my case it also meant; character design, level design and scripting, game geometry, audio / music direction, camera coding and all the (purposely) cheesy dialog. Like I said, it was a labor of love, even fighting off a lot of bad decisions execs wanted in the game and dealing with limited resources and time (~22 people for 14 months), I'm pretty proud. Very cool presentation man - I was stoked to get Progear up and running. I'm using a HDFury to convert hdmi 1080p to 480p CRT (the PS4 version) and it works very well for this when display mode is set to "max" (as the stretched 1080p signal reverts to an unstretched 480p with seemingly correct pixels). You know Mercs is the sequel to Commando, right? After all, its Japanese name is Senjo no Ookami 2. The main character, Joseph Gibson is the Super Joe in Commando. The boss music is unique for every boss in 19XX. It also goes back to its roots with the kill percentage which help with scoring and extends.
