Good to know The Gunsmoke port is still ball-bustingly hard. I remember finishing it on the NES when I was young before I ever tried it in the arcade. Then our local Shakey’s Pizza got the cab, and boy was that an unpleasant surprise. I didn’t finish the fucker till I was in university and played it on MAME. Also thanks for doing the dirty work for the community and doing these lag tests, SJ. I know they’re a pain in the ass and really time consuming, so seriously, thanks for doing the shit work for all of us.

I'm glad I'm not off base or the only one that found arcade Gunsmoke so insanely hard and frustrating to play. I imagine if it was my first experience with it back then, I would've sucked but had nostalgia for the idea of it. But after playing it on NES it's hard to go back to something more bland yet so punishing. I've kind of set expectations with the lag tests and know it's important to a lot of folks, so I always make sure to do it. I wish I could have done more with various controllers here since there's an issue, but it just becomes too much. I'm glad I at least found that issue and maybe it'l being some attention so they'll look into it.

@@ShmupJunkie - DUDE! Gun smoke is horrifyingly hard. About a year ago I picked up the Capcom collection for the PS2 that has the arcade version on it and it took me over an hour of consistently playing and dying to just get past the first few screens and to pick up the horse (if I recall). It’s punishingly hard. Lol. I just downloaded this collection this week and I’m curious to see if I can get to the first boss again. It’s wicked!!! 😂

The second arcade stadium has a higher CERO age rating in Japan (ironically it is lower in Europe). They would not be allowed to include games with a higher age rating as a DLC for the first Stadium. I think that’s why they went with a separate collection.

@qtsssim Specifically because of the depiction of violence found in the three Vampire games, which is a bit more graphic than the older games. Here’s what the originally description says: ※レーティング「C(暴力)」の表記は「CA2S:ヴァンパイア - The Night Warriors -」「CA2S:ヴァンパイアハンター - DARKSTALKERS' REVENGE -」「CA2S:ヴァンパイアセイヴァー - The Lord of Vampire -」によるものです。

That's a very interesting point. I did a quick look at the ESRB's faq and they can have different ratings for DLC, but haven't checked for other rating systems. I had assumed that they ran some numbers and thought they could sell it for more with them split up.

Fun personal fact... at 10 years old - in my local arcade everyone was kaning street fighter 2... whereas I absolutely was besotted by 3 wonders! - so much so I was bullied over it with taunts from older lads shouting "midnight!!" In a stupid voice whilst gobbling on me... harsh memories but I adored the game.

Ha! I not once saw that cabinet around as a kid, maybe it just wasn't as popular in the US who knows. Street Fighter 2 out here wasn't even an arcade phenomenon. It was in every liquor store, 7-11, laundromat and food parlor. It was hard to walk into a place and not see one because they made so much money. It took me about 10 years before I stopped looking to the corner after walking into a 7-11 to see where the machine was lol. Kind of miss that. But I would have liked three wonders back then had I seen it. A beautiful looking platformer and a shooter. I complain now because it's short playing at home, but in arcades I wouldn't have likely finished both with the few quarters I had to spend.

Edit: around August 19th, 2022, this collection works flawlessly without the preview video rendering issue I mentioned. Likely a Proton update did the trick FYI for Steam Deck owners, the collection works on the Steam Deck day one using Proton Experimental. One minor issue that is ongoing is that the preview videos when selecting the game is bugged at the moment, but it will likely get fixed in the near future. Thank you for this thorough review! So far, haven't had the time to explore all the games but I somehow enjoy Block Block more than I anticipated.

Fantastic review - I really enjoy the passion and level of detail. One thing I really appreciate about this collection that you didn’t mention was how each game has multiple leaderboards to chase. For example 1cc score, game complete time, and special challenges that bump the difficulty. This adds incentive to “get good” to climb the ladder.
@ShmupJunkie
@ShmupJunkie Жыл бұрын
You’re right on that. Since they couldn’t include an online play component they did go out of their way to create a ton of challenges and other ways for people to compete. I kind of sped through a lot of the features and options because I covered them already in the first Stadium review and it’s nearly identical here. But you’re right that’s a really good feature that few others collections ever have.

Thanks for the tip, I honestly get them confused a lot. That time is becoming a blur as I get older haha. So I was bout 14yrs old then when it released, in middle school. That sounds about right. I never got on with the first game. Not when there was always an MK cabinet right next to it and a much better game. But when 2 came out it's like we all forgot about everything else. The level of obsession in general was nuts. People just went apeshit over that game. It's hard to describe how good it was compared to any fighter we played before unless you were there. Man this review is spot. That explains why I was freaking frustrated when I played Stryder on the Genesis. It was identical to the arcade but not exactly. Especially, the sound quality as well. The arcade was 32 bit. That explains why I felt the Genesis version was freaking hard! I was so frustrated by the controls. Glad you enjoyed the review! To be fair, the home version was an incredibly good port for the time especially given the limitations of the hardware. Most who played it casually would barely tell the difference. But for someone who played the arcade constantly and could sometimes clear it on a credit or close, you’ll always notice all the details. I still really enjoyed the Genesis port too. It just didn’t quite scratch that itch since I was accustomed to playing it in the arcade.

I used to play Gunsmoke in the arcades as well because I liked the western theme, though I preferred Iron Horse because it wasn't so brutal. Another great video Junkie! The second collection definitely has some games that make this collection an easy grab for individual games. Eco Fighters, Saturday Slam Masters, the Mega Man titles, and Three Wonders are all ones I really wanna play. I also very much appreciated that you did actually take a look at the fighting games in the collection. I know you say that you find it hard to get to grips with them but many people in the community are always willing to help others learn. It's why I would recommend most people who wish to play any of the fighters to get the recent Capcom Fighting Collection, as it has basically all of the games in this collection, but with training modes, online play with rollback, mappable supers to single buttons, and a load of extras. I totally agree. And it's not that I don't get on with Fighters, I'm really good at certain ones like Tekken 2 and Tag that I've played A LOT back in the day. I think it's more that I only truly have fun with them socially. Like playing against friends. So back in the day I loved playing them and did a lot because that's all we did. Always in a group, always playing in arcades or over each other's houses etc. It was fun. But whenever I had to play them on my own against CPU etc. they don't keep me entertained the same way. And I rarely have anyone around to play versus. So it was cool while my boy was over for a week. Though he's 20 now so obviously not here often.

Really cool that you got to capture a lot of gameplay with your son, arcade games are pretty much always more fun co-op. And here I was thinking I was going to get out of this one without damage to my backlog but no, Last Duel is a must play for me. I love shumps that let you speed things up and the ground segments look like a lot of fun.

To be fair, you can pretty much and need to go full speed in Last Duel on anything past the initial stage, so it's not nearly the critical gameplay component it is in Gallop (which I know you love). Slowing down is rarely beneficial. But it's just an interesting shooter overall. I was intrigued when wltr3565 played through it first and enjoyed it. And I thought it was worth a play too. Not spectacular but a nice surprise given I'd never heard of it before.

Awesome video! I was actually on the fence for these games, the frame of lag seems to be around 4-5 for most games, which is not awful but could be better IMO. I think I'm gonna get some of these titles like Eco Fighters which I played a long time ago on emulator and arcade but for other games like King of Dragons or Knights of the Round I'll play them on the Capcom Belt Action compilation that I already have instead. That's pretty cool that your son likes to play games, I hope mine will like games as he grow up.

Excellent video mate, sorry it took so long to get to it, real bad week, Thank you mate, this video ultimately cheered me up and brought many a smirk to my face, and even a couple of chuckles. Excellent edit, information, overview, and top entertainment. I actually invested in this game on release day as last time I waited forever for a price drop, and because of all the fighters included, as well as Tiger Road, which I loved on the arcade. I totally agree with your review, very fair and excellent coverage. It's nice to see Black Tiger again, which is damn tough, but a beautiful game I mostly played on SNES but of course the arcades. I was pretty excited for Gunsmoke (appreciate the NES tip) but like you say its hard, real hard, and the controls in themselves don't help it, it would have been nice if they had updated the controls and made it more top down shooter style mechanics with left and right analogues for movement and shooting. I was disappointed that it's a separate game as I was really looking forward to modifying my arcade in the original Stadium with all these new titles. I think Capcom really missed a trick there but do like that they added the ability for gamers to buy what they want for gamers on a budget or specifically interested in certain genres. What Stadium 1 did for Shmups, Stadium 2 does for fighting games for me. Hopefully non fighters will fall in love with the amazing fighters on offer here. This is now my favourite was to play Alpha 3, Im in love and can't afford that Saturn version. The Darkstalkers games here are a great addition as well. The only thing I'd add is that if you have already invested in CAPCOM BEAT EM UP COLLECTION and CAPCOM FIGHTING GAME COLLECTION you will already own almost a third of the games. With that said though I can never have enough versions of King Of Dragons, Knights Of The Round, Darkstalkers, or Street Fighter (and yes the orignal does suck but fans have apparently fixed that now). Excellent review dude 10/10.

No worries my friend, I know how it goes. I know that when you actually have time, my work can provide some entertainment for you. I never saw or played Tiger Road in arcades back in the day and only knew it on the Turbografx. It was tough on there too, but the arcade is really a beast. I'm with you on the separate releases, kind of a bummer. I had one comment mention they have different ESRB ratings which could be the reason they couldn't combine them, but who knows. I thought it was more sales oriented. I don't own any of those other collections like many do, so for me it makes sense to grab it for the several games I will play and enjoy on there. And then I own them officially so I'm legit when I play them on the MiSTer as well. If you give me a way to support you, I will. If not, I'll just find a way to play them anyway 😅

Excellent video as usual junkie!, yesterday I downloaded the Capcom Stadium Collection 2 on my XBOX Series S and I really enjoyed Son Son even though is an older game it was fun. I see you are reviewing the Switch version, not sure if the switch has the same online features as the Xbox one but it has some cool online mechanics, special challenges and online ranking system for each game that makes it kind of addictive which was totally unexpected for me. I agree the first collection has some of the best shooters and the second one is more oriented for the fighting games, maybe we will get a third collection and I suspect it would be more oriented towards CPS3 and some other missing classics like Cadillacs and Dinosaurs or The Punisher but somehow I suspect there's license issues with those games.

Yeah, it does have all those features and it's a really aspect to the collection. Maybe not as good as having online play, but it's got everything else. After making the video I learned that the rom used here was also different from what many have been playing. Some of the stages were mixed around and the much harder teepee stage was placed very early in the game. It also seemed the default difficulty was set quite high. So not only is it a brutal game to begin with but I may have been playing an unreasonably hard version lol. Figures. I do like the game it’s self it’s super cool. It was just so tough bordering on absurd.

Gunsmoke is very hard, but there is a way to make things a bit more fair. There is actually more movement for the main character then the default setup. If you go to controller settings, you can add two more shot types to ZR and ZL. These are very useful for boss fights as you don't have to stand right in front of them. Now you can shoot forward but slightly to the right or slightly to the left.

Just finished watching (through a few distractions during cooking) and I’m in complete agreement with your overall verdict. I totally agree that the first collection was, overall, the better of the two but there no denying the quality of titles on show on this second stadium!! I’ve always been a huge fighting game fan but loved playing these single player, as at home with a friend that sucked at Street Fighter, was the only way to play…..(kinda want to take on your son as he looks pretty decent and had a hell of a finish 🤣🤣) The shmups however are limited in this collection but of a good quality (except for Gunsmoke which is stupid hard) especially Eco fighters, which I played lots on emulation and Sidearms which I have on my Pc Engine GT and still love to this day!! I’m a massive fan of King of Dragons and Magic Sword and I’m totally with you on the reviews you gave, I played these so much and are a lot of fun to speed run, especially Magic Sword as you can skip floors to complete quicker. Either way I’m glad we have the same level of nostalgia for these games because they shaped my childhood and I love every minute I relive that!! Amazing video and I can’t recommend this enough to everyone!!

Really glad you enjoyed it again and it helped make your cooking a bit more bearable too haha. Honestly, you don't want to play my son. I didn't mention it in the video but he plays in tournaments and often gets toward the later brackets. Especially in Blazblu and Smash Bros, but he plays plenty of Street Fighter and Dragonball Fighterz as well. He will absolutely destroy me in most of them unless it's something I've played a ton like Tekken 2 or Tag. He's a beast on games in general. I remember him playing Smash against 3 other good players all ganging up on him, and he just single handedly handed them all their ass lol. I was never that good at any fighting games. I'm with you on King of Dragons. At first it seemed overly simple and I wasn't impressed, the moveset is so limited. But once I stopped trying to play it like a beat em up and enjoyed the simplicity and short levels, plus the cool art, I liked it a lot more. I'm not a fan of slow paced beat em ups so KoD was more up my alley.

Magic Sword is meant to be completed in about 15-20 stages depending on which secrets / shortcuts you find. It shares a similar design philosophy to games like Yōkai Dōchūki and The Tower of Druaga, i.e. if you play it "conventionally" you are not meant to reach the end (without feeding the arcade a lot of credits) but players are/were expected to share their findings and find an optimal route together. It’s a pretty fun game to speedrun for that reason.

So true in regards to Gunsmoke, it's such a cool and unique game and a potentially great one sadly though, it's just about ruined by the difficulty. Despite this I love the game and really wish Capcom or a creative and talented hacker would adjust the code to make it a fair game because it would make it ten times more fun and excellent!
@ShmupJunkie

I haven't tried lowering the difficulty in the settings yet, maybe that would make a big difference. I tend to leave it on default, for better or worse. I'm happy playing the NES port since I love the music in that one and it's got more features and variety anyway, even if it looks a bit more primitive and flickers. I find it a lot of fun.

@@ShmupJunkie Oh, I thought they didn't offer easy level on this version, perhaps that could make a difference ? I would really like to know if it does because on the Arcade/MAME version lowering the difficulty does nothing and is likely a bug. Would be great to know if they actually improved it this time! Yeah, I have heard quite a few people singing the praises of the NES version online and it seems like a good game that I should try out (even if there are less bosses and levels), the NES music does also seem to have a cooler and funkier style that I like. It's weird such a cool game and concept never got a sequel or a remake (that would be a dream for me!) after so many years. The only other games that are similar to this style that I know of are Elemental Master and perhaps the Ikari Warrior games but they are really too different to say they are in the same style as Gunsmoke. The gameplay and setting are just so cool and hasn't been really repeated since. I wish I knew how to program so I could make a hack like the many great ones I have seen for Mega Drive games already. I think with a few tweaks it could be elevated to true classic status and be the fan favourite it could have been.

Something I noticed that makes it a bit easier is only firing when in range of an enemy. If you hold the fire button down permanently, the enemies are really skittish and try to avoid your shots
@mechanicalpants

@@seenoweevil1991 I have never noticed this! And I think I remember using autofire and shooting a lot of the time when I play, so perhaps this was happening as you say and making it even harder. I will definitely try this out, have you ever seen anyone confirming this online maybe?

Excellent video as always, thanks! How are people approaching these games, credit feeding on first run then being more restrictive? Using in the inbuilt challenge runs? Personally I give myself 5 credits and see how far I can get.

I think everyone is different. I actually like well made checkpoint games so I can keep retrying areas until I figure them out. But for endless respawns, I will play it once to a point credit feeding it, not til the end though. I like to leave some mystery and something to work toward. Then I may save state the start of levels and practice them one at a time until I get pretty good at clearing them. Every game is different. I try not to just credit feed through blindly as it takes away from what often makes it fun. But everyone is different.

been looking forward to this one! bought the entire set as soon as I could, although about 90% of the time has just been me trying to raise my rank on the leaderboards trying to get the one-credit clear on Black Tiger! Capcom definitely had a thing for fantasy stuff back in those days, black tiger, magic sword, king of dragons, knights of the round, and yeah the D&D Mystara games (which WOTC *does* own the rights to now so I guess that assessment was accurate, haha.) The fighting games were cool to see, but aside from having the various viewpoints of the arcade cabinets you're better off playing those over on Street Fighter 30th Anniversary or the newer Capcom Fighting Collection (which has HSF2 anyway, but with online play!) this was definitely a great breakdown of the included games!

You've got your work cut out for you on Black Tiger, that game is tough. I'm pretty good at it by now but I can't say I ever cleared it without a continue or two at some point. Totally doable though. Kind of the same with Magic Sword. You have to memorize the best and easier routes to take and avoid the nastiest areas.

Always love your videos. I agree the first collection is also my favorite. I am just happy I to be finally playing Black Tiger on the Switch. It's one of my childhood favorites. I think I am all fightered out with the fighting games and no longer play them anymore. So it's good we can buy what we want. Did you skip over the sports game or did I miss that one?
@ShmupJunkie

No you didn't miss it, I skipped quite a few. No way I could cover every game in that much detail without it being a 3-4hr video, so I focused on the ones I cared for most and spent time with. More like a short list of the games I found most interesting to me personally I wanted to highlight in the overall collection.

Good overview of this collection; I feel the same way that you do, I don't care for this collection of games nearly as much as the better offerings on the first in the series. Not just keeping them in the same arcade and combined with the first stadium title also is kind of perplexing. I'd like to have them all together, like I do with the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics on Steam. Breaking them up into three subsets would have been a desired option as I could get some of them on publisher sale that way; they never seem to discount the individual games and they doubled the price of each to four dollars for this collection. Really the only ones that I am all that interested in are Eco Fighters, Slam Masters, maybe one or two of the fighting games, and King of Dragons, and that last one I already have on the beat em ups bundle but would double dip for a cheap sale price. Games like Magic Sword look good upon first impression but get repetitive fast and I always wanted that one to have more outdoor environments like stage 1 instead of the majority of the game taking place in a tower.

Nice video! I love your enthusiasm for these games! Question: Do you know what the input delay data is for Gamecube controllers? I felt comfortable with what I played with my Gamecube controllers (especially Eco Fighters), but I'm curious as to what the data is.

I wish I could tell you but I’ve never used GC controllers with my Switch. Only on my Wii really. So I don’t have any wired up for that kind of testing. I think it would depend most on what kind of adapter you were using to make it work on the Switch. As the controller itself is analog and wouldn’t have any delay of its own.

@@ShmupJunkie Ah, I guess that explains the good game feel I get. I've just heard various opinions regarding input delay when the Switch is docked. I use the official GCN adapter from Nintendo that was made for Smash Bros.
