What's up, folks! I'm back with another Talk Talk reaction, and this time we listen to the first song from their 1988 album Spirit of Eden (thank you again to Stuart!), "The Rainbow." This is a sonically fascinating tune, not only the particular elements but the chronology and atmosphere too. So join me as begin the next chapter in the Talk Talk journey. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on KZfaq and getting early-access to video-watchalongs and reactions blocked on KZfaq, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, video-reactions, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

There's a warm melancholy to this that draws you in. It's not a track I would automatically reach for but like everything they do, it still manages to captivate.

You’re correct, the tracks do run into each other - it’s an album best listened to as a whole.

I remember, maybe 20 years ago that a rainbow was very popular amongst the youth.

Yes this album was a bit of shock coming after The Colour of spring but Chameleon days gave a hint of where Talk Talk were going next . Spirit of Eden and The Colour of Spring are both in my Top ten albums. Magnificent writing and production and top musicians.

I remember when this album came out, it was a real shock to the system after The Colour Of Spring, and it took me months to get into it. Hollis takes the listener on a weird and wonderful trip, having said that, its not an album I play regularly, It's years since I last heard it so I'm looking forward to taking this journey with you. I think I own all Talk Talk's albums, even the obscure ones like Missing Pieces. You need to get into Prefab Sprout Matt.

Thanks for doing Talk Talk! As an atheist late Talk Talk - and the solo album Mark Hollis did - brings some transcendence (or what people believe has to be called transcendence, because they were brought up that way) into the world of small citoyens BFB. (But early Swans do too ...)

The soundscape and mood of this album is a shift on/away from the previous, certainly earlier synth-led albums. The record company didn’t get it and neither did the record buying public at the time, expecting another commercial sounding album, which this is not. Many rate this as their best work - I still can’t see past Colour of Spring but listened to as a whole the album has an affect on the listener for sure.

I have mixed feelings about this one. 🤔 The opening was too long and boring for me, but then comes a cool guitar ❤and other interesting sonic details and some very enjoyable moments throughout. I really loved a few parts, but on the whole I feel it lacks a real structure. Just a question of personal taste, no doubt. It's like a splash of beautiful colours, some more appealing than others, but in the end they don't form any kind of picture or engaging composition. It feels a bit too pompous and "artsy" to me.

Entirely fair take, and it sounds like Talk Talk fans at the time were a bit thrown by the sound and had to grow into this album. And I do hear the "splash of colours" concept in this one, for sure. Either way, thanks for checking the video, love. 🥰
