"When will you accept your life? (The one you hate)". To me the song feels like an inner dialogue revealed because of course so many of us can relate. It's about taking stock and looking at yourself, and realising that ultimately you have to stop comparing yourself to others and be yourself, that's your power... or accept the life you have. That often you are your own worst enemy. "Others conquered love but I ran, I sat in my room and drew up a plan, but plans fall through (as they so often do ) and time is against me now" Self-loathing and doubt "when you will not open your eyes" to the opportunities you have to make for yourself. And that stuck record playing at the end reflets the feeling of the lyrics, stuck in a trap of your own making.

Considered my favorite smiths song when I was younger. There is also a Peel Session version

A different version (very similar) made it onto the Hatful of Hollow compilation-without the ‘skipping record’ fade-out. One of many unusual, memorable, and irreplaceable early songs, at least for fans. (Hatful included the breakout ‘How Soon Is Now?’ and predated their second LP Meat Is Murder.)
