We went grocery shopping in China!
We didn't expect an American superstore like Walmart exists in China.
So we explored its supermarket to see if the grocery prices are cheap or expensive.
We were surprised to see some very strange snacks found in China.
The weird snacks we saw may be normal to average Chinese, but we have never seen those before. Check out our vlog inside a Chinese Walmart.
Are grocery prices cheap in China?
Is China expensive?
is China cheap?
What can $100 get me in China?
What are some strange things found in Chinese supermarket?
What is the cost of living in China?
Is it cheap to travel China?
Is it expensive to travel China?
Is China worth visiting?
How is the quality of life in China?
Should I move to China?
How expensive is China?

Had a great time watching your video! As a Chinese, it was eye-opening as well since I rarely visited a supermarket like you guys. I would like to point out some mistakes or offer some translations, hoping it can help with the understanding for the interested: 8:26 Those chips are respectively sea salt (yellow) and nori (blue) flavour. 8:54 The tag says buy 2 bags, you get a 5 yuan discount. 10:48 It's made of soybean (green package). 11:38 It's actually duck wings (similar hehe). 14:07 The tag says salted meat with skin, but it doesn’t specify which meat it is. 14:44 It's actually pork ^_^ 15:34 It is indeed a mushroom called snow fungus or snow ear (names found on wikipedia). 15:42 It's vermicelli which is made of sweet potatoes. 17:19 It is indeed pomelo. 19:16 It's a very popular Chinese snack called latiao (googleable) which means spicy bars. 22:01 Funny thing, because China has its own shoe size system, but I would say no one uses it. Instead, everyone uses the European system, hence the "EU 42/43".

Twenty years ago, these foreign chain supermarkets were very popular. Due to the shift of all shopping environments in China to the internet, traditional supermarkets have declined, and many supermarkets and malls have started to integrate comprehensive leisure. These foreign chain supermarkets have conservative thinking and lack innovation, so few people go there. If you want to visit a supermarket, it's best to go to a local large supermarket, they are even better!

Walmart online shop is called " walmart No.1 store" in China, customers can purchase all items exactly as same as walmart, if you place order today, the walmart will deliver to your doorstep by tomorrow , delivery time is within 24 hours . Some years ago, at the begining stage, Walmart No.1 store requires customer to purchase items over 200 Yuan, and give free delivery service. now, this is changed to 100 Yuan.

In fact, in China, especially in big cities like Shanghai, many young people prefer to shop online. Because logistics and express delivery are very developed in China. You can only see very few young people shopping in supermarkets, while the majority are elderly people who enjoy using coupons. Unfortunately, you can't experience online shopping or Alipay in Shanghai, which is why China is more convenient now.

In fact, only elderly people nowadays prefer to buy groceries face-to-face, but compared to supermarkets, they are more willing to go to traditional vegetable markets distributed in cities. Young people tend to order takeout, while middle-aged people need to cook for themselves. They like to buy groceries through mobile apps (Meituan) and deliver them directly to their homes. Therefore, Chinese supermarkets tend to choose to build amusement parks to attract customers, and there are more snacks available. Almost no one buys clothes in the mall, and major brand clothing is purchased through apps.

It's fascinating to read insights like this. China is so technologically ahead than any other country you can think of, so i imagine their daily habit is also geared to anything that makes life more convenient, aka online-centric. I myself have multiple parcels arriving almost every day, and yes, most are from China, so sometimes i wonder what would their shopping be like since the convenient factor is multiplied for them to shop online. I don't even have appetite for retail shopping anymore despite formerly being somewhat a shopaholic, and the only times i do is when i view anything livestreamed (so, back to online it is, lol!).

@@shinachikudidnthappen..mov9196 The discussion that is commonly heard in other countries around the world about the reduction of jobs due to the Internet is actually an old topic in China more than 20 years ago. @ndukasmith Well…yes. The point of comparison I have is the places I’ve gone to, mostly in the west although I’ve been in supermarkets in the far east as well so it’s not the first time I’m seeing squid as a snack for example. What I found amazing was vast variety and the single amounts in a lot of packaging. Then it was amazing to see the “do it yourself” loose noodles and chicken and pork. I thought was unusual and unsanitary just because people can’t be trusted to keep clean and treat things properly. And then that Walmart looked enormous compared to the ones I’ve been to.

@ndukasmithWhy so defensive. Unusual is not necessarily weird or negative. I myself love snacks variety from China and Taiwan, reason being it is so diverse and "unusual" from my place, so i love a supermarket tour like this just for chance of seeing others' snacking habits. Maybe you'd prefer the word "refreshing" but that's like policing one's tone, isn't it.

Those single serving snacks actually look like it could be side dish ingredients for when you make instant noodles or just cook some plain rice at home, or if you're making instant noodles or just pack some plain rice with you on the go, and need some food ingredients to eat with it, so that you're not just eating noodles or rice with nothing in it. In Singapore, you can find some of these kinds of single serving foods in convenience stores like 7-Eleven, so you can make some instant cup noodles or bowl noodles, and maybe add an egg or a piece of chicken into it to complete your meal. So it's not snacks or confectionaries like chocolates, candy or cookies, but rather savoury side dishes.

Walmart's supply chain includes some 30,000 Chinese factories, which produce an estimated 70 percent of all of the goods it sells. Walmart's global sourcing headquarters, the nerve center for its international operations, is also located in Shenzhen, a booming city on the southeastern China coast. But recently, Walmart is planing to move it’s sourcing center to Vietnam (or maybe partially, it happened in 11/15’s APEC meeting in San Francisco), guys will certainly see more Vietnam products in the very near future, although Vietnam’s GDP is around $406 billions in 2022, only about 2.25% of China’s GDP, roughly close to 60% of China’s Guangxi Province of $725 billions (a neighboring province from Vietnam border), one of the poorest Chinese 33 provinces with about half of Vietnam’s population of 100 millions.

The ketchup should be in the seasoning area, along with the salt and sugar. There are some Chinese products that are of good quality and expensive, and there are also cheap and poor quality products. In the United States, I see a lot of low-quality products because importers choose cheap and low-quality products in order to sell out all their products quickly. This does not mean that the goods produced in China are poor.

Stop by, its worth the trip; I would recommend coming in the spring or summer or even early fall; winter tends to be Very Cold and/or lots of snow, annual snow falls tend to be around 4-7 feet sometimes we get that much snow in one snow storm ( those are the fun days).
