Bro I am Chinese, the hotel policy in Xinjiang and Tibet is more strict than other Chinese provinces. Generally only the medium-high to high-end hotels allow the foreigner to accommodate.

Not only Urumqi, but any city in China has only a certain number of hotels that accept foreigners, so avoid wasting time and check whether foreigners are accepted before booking

In fact that's an old law that already been cancelled, nowadays, as long as the hotel registered with the police, and use the police system to check in, they can host foreigners, but many hotels still haven't update their system, and can't take a passport to check in.

because it is impolite to sit on someone else's bed, most of the people sitting in the aisle are people on the upper bunks, and those seats are not for sale. There is no standing ticket in the sleeper car

There shouldn't be people with standing ticket in sleeper car, but only short distance and limited tickets could be sold to those and they can't enter sleeper car. I think those you saw are upper (middle, top) bed holders either sitting by the windows or just stand there watching outside view.

China is not really meant for the low end traveler. Of course there are restrictions, and some amenities are really expensive especially in big cities. A tourist will have major difficulties without understanding the language and local culture. In that respect, South East Asia is simply the best. Backpacker heaven.

BTW, when you go to Xian from Urumqi, you can actually take the high speed train, very fast/comfortable and you can view the specular view.

I travel last year as state guests of china , and use same type of train from bautou to datong, becouse air line is not available in inner Mongolia. Well developed nation and country . People of china respect Pakistani people and hugs you we are friends ❤

Not only pakistan. Even overseas Chinese has difficulty to apply a Chinese Visa. I live in Thailand. My city is more than 500km from Bangkok. And you don't accept mails application
