Story
In Tabee Toean - meaning 'Goodbye Sir' in Indonesian - five veterans of the Indonesian War of Independence (1945-1949) share their recollections, telling us how they as young soldiers, unprepared for guerrilla warfare, found themselves in a devil's circle of excessive violence and cruelty.

It is touching to see this, now elderly man, speaking about what he was part of when he was a young man. He doesn't try to excuse what happened, but now speaks as a human about what happened to other humans. It is strange how normal law abiding people can sometimes do terrible things to others. Thank you to this man for telling his story publicly. Wishing peace to both Dutch and to Indonesian people - and to anyone else who reads these words. Life is short, fragile and precious. We should try to live it well and treat other humans with respect.

@@alifoemry5217 That seems fair. The Dutch government represents the Dutch state and what it did in the past so it seems correct that it apologise for past injustices committed by the Netherlands - as should other former colonising countries. I hope the Netherlands has done this? Dutch people today should try to be aware of their country's past. Thank you! P.S. I have liked your comment.

@@robinsen8858 Yes, Dutch government apologize for 1940's killing not apologize for hundred years of colonization/occupation (by dutch kingdom and VOC). But what people dont realize, so manny native indonesia was dead in hundred years history of dutch colonization. We dont ask money for that just apologize for hundred years of colonization history. I dont know why your government dont do that apologize but for me its like politic diplomacy, maybe? @@alifoemry5217 Again thank you for the information and also for the article link. By the way I am not Dutch, but British with some Indian ancestry, so I do understand the need for former colonising countries to apologise and try to make up for the past actions of their countries (by compensation or by acting together wirh the former occupied country). I also agree with you the importance of young people in the former colonies being aware of their history including that part of their history when they were colonised, and not to simply dislike the former coloniser but to make it aware of its previous actions and work to improve the relations between the countries and people. I think that one of the things that impressed me about the elderly Dutch man in the video going back to Indonesia was that rather than pretending that these things didn't happen he acknowledged them. Most people in Europe don't know and don't want to know about their colonial past. It's simpler for them to profit from the wealth it gave to their countries, and forget about where that wealth came from. It is important to make them aware of it, but then also make them feel they can do something to correct this part of their history, for example Dutch people to be interested in and to appreciate Indonesia). Love and respect to Indonesia!

My Father served in the Dutch Army in Indonesia for over two years during the rebellion . He suffered from PTSD the remainder of his life. He spoke if it only twice and only after we emigrated to the U.S.. Once as I was preparing to leave for Vietnam in 1972 and again when he requested that he be buried with his mates in Indonesia when he died. I tried to meet his wishes but was unable to do so.

In the Netherlands, they don't teach much about the 'policing actions' in Indonesia because the dutch government thinks that they are so very gentle and did not ever do anything wrong in that conflict, moreover, it was supported by the fake royal family, they were afraid that would lose their economic interests and freebies out of that Indonesia. I am born in the Netherlands but I don't have anything up with that country their government or the so-called royal family, they are are all cowards in their own mind.

They should have told the whole story including the cruel colonial conquests, the suppressing colonial system, the bersiap, the "politionele acties" and the supressing Indonesian annexation of the RMS and Moluks. Do the same with Suriname in the West. History is not about guilt. It is about what happened. The guild should be in the interpretation.

@@Treinbouwer We are not only talking about the history of the Dutch and Japanese colonialism, even more dark tragedies what we learned and know compared to what you call the G30SPKI tragedy, the Santa cruz tragedy, and many other dark tragedies, but I don't agree on one thing about RMS because they are rebels who are influenced by the Dutch, but why do we Indonesians often discuss The Dutch in our history books because the Dutch colonized Indonesia (the archipelago) for 300 years, because at that time we lived under pressure, a caste system that burdened the natives, forced cultivation, forced labor, exploitation of natural resources, trade monopoly (VOC), annexation, genocide ( Westerling and many others), all the relics of our ancestors were taken (until now you can see many relics of Majapahit and Sriwijaya in the European and American museums as evidence of the plundering ever happened) and many more things that I can't convey here because it's too sadistic , what do you think after knowing so many terrible tragedies happened in Indonesia, even after we became independent we forced to pay VOC debts (Dutch companies), you have to read from both sides of history to find a common thread from history, of course we know Indonesia is not a good country that doesn't have a dark history, if we talk about dark history of course all countries have it, but of course We will not forget the hundreds of years of colonialism by the Dutch, which until now there has been no compensation for war by the Dutch, unlike Japan, which immediately admitted defeat and gave compensation in the form of money, educational infrastructure and the economy, but now we do not hate your country, that all past history, I also don't agree with war crimes committed by Indonesia, studying history for a better future, and I am also very grateful for the arrival of the Dutch, our Indonesian people, consisting of various tribes, races, and religions, unite for the same enemy namely the Netherlands, and pledged together with the Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge) consisting of Jong Java, Jong Sumatranen Bond, Jong Bataks Bond, Jong Islamieten Bond, Indonesian Youth, Jong Celebes, Jong Ambon (moluccan), Katholikee Jongelingen Bond, Betawi Youth, Sekar Rukun and many more, to establish a country, namely Indonesia, sorry for my English bad because I use google translate.

I am not clear about this history, but even if I studied it, I would probably conclude the same: move forward without hatred. My parents taught school in Tomohon, Sulawesi and were married there. Six months later they were captured by the Japanese and were interned for three and half years, my father in Nagasaki. They were reunited in Morotai and returned to teach until 1951 when they moved permanently to Australia. I spent my first three years in Indonesia and loved living with the food and artifacts such as the beautiful carvings and batik fabrics. I carried throughout my life a love of world wide cultures and when Barack Obama announced his candidacy it was easy for me to admire him. As I traveled I met and married an American and later one of my children returned to the very same part of Japan, Fukuoka, Kyushu, where my father had served as a slave laborer, and he taught English there for two years. As a family we want to build relationships with people who once may have been our enemies.

I'm happy to say that I'm an "indo". I was born in Holland. I have now lived in Canada for over 50 years. My parents were Indos as well, meaning that they each had a Dutch father and an Indonesian mother. I have heard many stories good and bad on how the Dutch treated the Indonesians, but this is no different than what all other colonial countries did to their colonial inhabitants. I have had the opportunity to travel through Sumatra, Java and Bali several times and it is a beautiful country. The stories my grandmother (who was 100% Indonesian) shared with me on the beauty of that country came to light when I visited the country...and she was right. I found the people friendly, humble and happy regardless of their socioeconomic standing. I never saw any dislike towards the Dutch when I revealed that I was of Dutch ancestry. As an Indo, I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to experience both cultures from a personal perspective. Both cultures have their pros and cons. The cons: In the past both the Dutch and Indonesians have mistreated people. The Dutch mistreated the Indonesians (during colonial rule) and the Indonesians mistreated the Indos (after Indonesia gained their independence). So lets not dwell on the bad as I believe both have had their share of bad moments against humanity. The pros: Both cultures can co-exist beautifully and have done so as I have witnessed in both countries. So lets not forget the past, but don't let the past hold you back from enjoying the future. Learn from it and embrace what it has taught you. Life is too short to carry such a wasted emotion.

A sad and shameful part of our history. I can't feel anything but shame for what my ancestors did to the people of Indonesia. Even today we don't learn much about this part of history in school. We only learn that there was a police action and that there was fighting against armed rebels. I knew the soldiers burned villages, but that was presented as if it was part of the fighting. That these villages were enemy camps. I never knew that there were random executions of civilians.. As a Dutchman I feel awful about this whole thing.

The mentality like forgiving is the reason why Indonesia was able to be colonized in the first place (even dutch admiral saw that mentality as a sign of weakness). The only proper way and “civilized” way to treat colonialists is like when Koxinga kicked out dutch from Taiwan or when Vietminh marched those 8000 french troops to prisons which resulted in many starvation and deaths. Besides, Indonesia should ask for those 4.3 billion guilder back, gotta teach those master race some humiliation and the proper meaning of “actions have consequences “. I cant fathom why most asian these days still have mentality of worshipping white race, some even went as far as getting blue eyes surgery. Crazy.

My mother lost her 3 younger siblings while moving out of town to escape from the Dutch Army. They were all children under 5 y.o. Her 3 older brothers joined the student army, and got into the guirella confronting the Dutch Army. They were not living huge at that time. They were just common people who lived as common citizens in Jogjakarta. My grandfather was once a chief of a station. His house next to the station was ruined by the Dutch bombing from their air force. Lucky enough, no one got hurt because of it. As a chief of the station, my grandfather spoke Dutch very fluently. He died not long after the second agression in 1951. He was so much depressed.

People are honest about it and fully acknowledge the suffering indonesians had to suffer under our rule. That said there is some VOC pride in the netherlands, but that has more to do with our own struggle of independence against spain at the time and the fact that a small european backwater managed to become one of the most powerfull trading empires. Basically people like the trade part, but not the exploitation and supressing of locals.
