Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.

Toranaga moved quickly and told the Portuguese what he knew so he could see if they’d make a move against John and thereby verify what he said as true AND because he is under a deadline with the regents voting on his fate. This show is excellence. Enjoy!

Toranaga tested John words about the Portugese intent and therefore he surmised they would come for the Anjin and that would prove the truth of his words about the Portugese. He also swapped rooms to test for spies. Any spy would relay the room swap back to the assassin. That didn't happen, the assassin went to the wrong room. Multiple plays at once. Such smart writing for a very smart character.

Without spoilers, I advise you to watch this show with your mind wide open and looking past the tropes and clichés of modern storytelling. This story forces you to go off the linear path. Also, the story teaches that people are neither good nor bad but rather are nuanced creatures with complexities that make them do what they do.

The dominance of the English as a naval powerhouse is still about 100 years away or so, perhaps a bit more. Keep in mind that John wasn't piloting for an English ship, it was a Dutch ship.

at the year 1600 it is the spanish and portugues that rule the seas, much thanks to all the gold they get from the catholic trade monopoly. after 1650 to 1700 it is the dutch that beat the crap out of everyone on the seas, they had inovated ship design and being a sailor was a highly regarded profession so the dutch had both the best ships and sailors. after 1700 it is the english.

@@QuackAttack Yea and then the English tried to sail to Spain a bit later and got a large part of their fleet destroyed in return. It's the less known part of that story. In fact that attempted invasion was part of the conflict that Blackthorne is part of here. An alliance of England, the Dutch and Portugals who opose the personal union against the personal union of Spain and Portugal. At the time Spain and Portugal were the countries with the rich colonies that made them tons of money. England was pretty much relegated to finance privateers to steal a portion of that riches, but that was a coin toss and led to a few good years and many years where esspecially Spain got extremly richt and powerfull. The schoolbook story of the repelling of the Spanish Armada being the turning point on the sea and afterwars the English ruled the sea is a fairy tale and ignores the ~150 years before the Royal Navy actually could claim some form of dominance and until that actually became an unchallanged reality it took another 100 years (and then lasted for a few decades before other nations challanged it again). At the time it was pretty much a sittuation where the Spanis and Portugese could afford loseing ships/fleets and still rebuild while England could not. Which is why expedition like this one were pretty much always privatley funded high risk high reward operations.

The division of the "unknown" world between Spain and Portugal was not only a real thing, but was even blessed by the Pope Alexander VI. who you may know as the infamous Rodrigo Borgia. The agreement from "about 80 years ago" John mentions is the Treaty of Zaragoza, signed on 22 April 1529. This followed the Treaty of Tordesillas from 7 June 1494, which was signed just two years after Christopher Columbus "discovered the new world". These treaties shaped South and Middle America as they are today, with a Portuguese speaking Brazil and the Spanish speaking rest. Macao on the chinese coast was a Portuguese tradepost and later colony until 1999. Regarding England as the dominant sea power of the future its first step was arguably set in 1588 when the Spanish Armada tried to conquer England and was beat back. One of the Vice Admirals of the english fleet in this battle was Sir Francis Drake. In the first episode John said that he had sailed under him. This is a nice parallel because Francis Drake was before serving in the Royal Navy infamously a very successful privateer. Which was basically a mercenary at sea, raiding only spanish and portuguese ships. John with his Dutch crew and ship is exactly the same, therefore he always denies throughout the show being a pirate but just serving his Queen (Elizabeth I.). Pirates were outlaws who attacked ships and bases and plundered them for their own gain and would be hanged when captured. Privateers in the contrary were considered combatants and to be treated as prisoners of war. Killing them in custody would be illegal. That's why the Jesuits enlist the christian/catholic lords to secretly get rid of John and don't do it themselves.
@BobHerzog1962
@BobHerzog1962 3 ай бұрын
At the time the division also wasn't all that important given that Portugal and Spain were ruled by the same Monarch. Yes they were still different entities and made sure to express that. But in the book that point also was brought up, because this way Blackthrone could throw in some of the stuff the Spanish did to natives around the world (and with ,ercenaries they "borrowed" from Japan)

Hiroyuki Sanada was brought on as the lead and a producer so he would have free reign to make the show as authentic as possible. The dedication and detail that went into this ....wow!!! The initial filming was actually scrapped several years ago because it wasn't considered good enough. Fyi... Yoshii Toranaga is his name... but in Japanese, the surname comes first... Like Blackthorne John or Quinn Mason. So Toranaga is his given name, Yoshio is his line. Just as Toda Mariko, Toda Hiromatsu (Toranaga's number 1) and Toda Fuji (the one who lost her husband and child by seppuku in Ep 1) are all in the same family... (though Mariko is so by marriage to Buntaro, Hiromatsu's son and Fuji's uncle). Just a refresher because it seemed for a second that one of you were thinking his given name is Yoshii.

Arguably it takes even longer until England achieves dominance. In 1700 both France and Spain were still strong enough to rival England. I would argue the 7 years war is when England actually achieved a form of dominance (one might argue already a bit before in preperation but that is semantics, because until tested it wasn't yet a power they could project).

Toranaga in the books is an order of magnitude more impressive than he's depicted in the show, imo. I understand that changes must be made in adaptation, and I don't think the show is bad for the decisions the show runners made regarding some of Toranaga's actions, but man, there a lot of really subtle maneuvering that got cut. As for British naval power: you've got to remember that Britain was a backwater in Europe at this time. They were still in the Middle Ages in a lot of ways. Other comments have said that their navy didn't really take off until sometime in the 1700s, which is true. However, (and this is my opinion as an amateur) I'd say the British Navy didn't become THE sea power until Trafalgar in 1805.
@GhostWatcher2024

At any rate, both are well over a century away from this story. Also... although i agree to an extent about Toranaga in the book... but the book let us into his thoughts, where here his actions have to speak for themselves... and throughout the series, the show did a great job of keeping US guessing, which is a great pov, and the times it lets us in on these characters are very well acted.

In the mid-17th century, before the first British colonial empire was established, Spain and Portugal decided to divide and rule the world through the Treaty of Tordesillas. Eventually Spain gained hegemony in Europe. Philip II ruled over Christianity and Portugal, commanded a powerful fleet, and controlled world maritime trade. They then attempted to use Japan's military power, which had succeeded in domestically producing guns, to conquer China (Ming Dynasty). The method of increasing the number of Christian feudal lords through Christian missionary work, increasing their political power, and controlling them as territories was a specialty of Spain's strategy for world conquest. At that time, Japan's silver production exceeded one-third of the world's trade, and the Netherlands, which became independent from Spain, established the East India Company and exported cannons and gunpowder to export Japanese silver. It was successful. By teaching Ieyasu about Spanish conspiracies and driving out Christianity and Spain, only the Netherlands, which pursued only profit, continued to trade with Japan even during the Edo period of national isolation.

The "how many times you bathe" scene is hilarious. As South East Asian myself, yes we bathe every day, even twice a day (here, the sun is a deadly lazer). But now I too wonder. How many times do you people bathe in the West? Once everyday, or every week? Because when I see Hollywood movies or series, people just straight go work/school after waking up. Some just brushing their teeth. No baths, at all. So, I can't tell if this is realistic or not.
@_iarna_

So, today, it depends on where one lives -- people in very hot/humid places in the US tend to bathe (well, shower) multiple times a day. (For example, in Arizona, a desert state that can nearly hit 50C on its hottest days, two or three showers a day is not unusual). Even in more temperate areas, most everyone showers every day (when people shower is more variable -- showers just before bed are not uncommon). Other more activity based showering also gets mixed in, like it'd be considered rude to not shower after working out. Overall, I don't think we're that different than you at this point.

England is just launching to naval superiority during this time period we're seeing. Bolstered by royal marriage ties and shared embrace of Protestant religions, the Dutch and the English are working as top-of-the-line naval powerhouses. In 1588, 12 years prior, the Spanish Armada had been defeated by the English, which severely weakened the Naval Superiority of Spain and allowed England to overtake her chief rival in the exploration/exploitation/colonization game. The Erasmus is a top war dog out in the oceans 'today', during Shogun. The presence of the English pilot on the Dutch expedition is also not unusual given the countries's ties to each other at that time. In the book the Portuguese and the Jesuits are crapping their pants because the absolute menacing threat that is represented by the Erasmus. Especially if captained by an English Pilot, who could train a fanatically-obedient samurai crew quite easily to marry the ferocity of Japanese fighting spirit with the meanest, fastest, most deadly ship in the whole region, under command of a privateer with a grudge. The Black Ship is too bulky and doesn't maneuver for shit, and will be ladened down with trade goods and Japanese silver by the ton. Under maritime rules because Blackthorne has letters of Marque, he could legally attack the Black Ship and seize her and her cargo as trophies of war, and every single Portuguese leader in Japan knows it.

to answer your question about the Royal Navy achieving dominance on the World stage, that happened in 1805 after the Battle of Trafalgar. During this time period the Spanish Navy was actually the most powerful in the World but it was on the decline after the debacle of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and countries like Portugal, England and Holland were making huge inroads on their dominance

Timeline wise, this is 1600, Shakespere is an active playwright. Queen Elizabeth reigns. Spain began trying to invade England twelve years prior, and will continue to do so till a year after this takes place. The English were not yet dominant, but you can see the patterns going in their favor. (Their navel tactics were vastly superior -- relying on reliable and accurate canon.) The real life guy that Blackthorn is based on (William Adams) took part in the defense against the Spanish Armada.

But this is no different than a lot of shows that compress time... like in forensics shows, forensics processing takes just a few hours (as if it's the ONLY case), and from hearing to trial is practically overnight rather than weeks.

You guys should definitely watch some other Animated "kids" shows. Since you liked Avatar, I would recommend Tales of Arcadia, Gravity Falls, and (not kids shows) Rick and Morty, and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

I also recommend the Netflix version of Voltron. It's animated by the same studio that did Legend of Korra.

actually for a period of history in japan the shogun was the most powerful leader of the country but let me tell you the shogun is actually not the emperor the emperor is someone else and he is always there but during the shogun period the emperor didnt have much power soo he was not the most powerful leader of the country now you will ask then who is shogun well shogun were the military leader of the country like the chief of army and navy and since it was the period of samurai the shogun basically controlled all the samurai of the country and that gave him the edge over the emperor

After the events of The Ones who Live and the coming of DD season 2 and Dead City season 2, do u think they will skip Rick and Michonnes timeline forward to match with the dead city timeline and that way we could get a possible Maggie and Rick reunion in dead city season 2 on maggies part of the dead city show

Greetings Everyone. I really like youre reactions to movies and tv shows. But Shogun (Without spoilers) is as disrespecfull to the book as if someone told the story of our lives not telling important moments, adding non existing, and shortening to an extend that "holes" may never be filled. The japanese Ladies in the book are pretty, James Clavel description is breathtaking, and the Lady Ochiba, Kiku and Mariko in the show; they are gorgeous, but they are not even close to the original. I would really like to have a chat with you all to explain and add to the story. Knowing it is almost impossible I am happy to say that you enjoy the story so far. Y love the book, and the Asian Saga of Clavel is awesome. Thank you for reading my comment. Bliss you all.

Funny and sad how a good story became so rare, people actually amazed when a tv show actually... shows something. Characters, actions, developments! That said, ofc, a phenomenal series. As close to 10 as a history-based show can be

If I would tell you guys one thing is to stop expecting tropes. When you expect things to go in a trope way you miss or misinterprete things that's laid out b4 you. There's no one side is good or bad people do thi gs that benefits them.all have their issues. And just because Mariko is a woman doesn't mean her dark confessions are sexual in nature. Your western trope is showing in that take. Remember these events and characters are based on real life people. After the series end I suggest you watch the countless videos on these real life people in a KZfaq video or on your own. You'll find that the real life things are just as exciting as the show. IMO

FYI, there is no reported Season 2 going forward as this is considered a mini-series rather than a multi-year show. Maybe that will change but right now it is a one-off

No it's just a mini-series just like the original series from 1980. Shogun is pretty faithful to the book. It's a one off.

I think they should watch some more sci-fi before dark, I remember they were able to follow it but were getting confused in Loki when it has very little time travel mechanics, I would love for them to watch it but just don't want them not being able to follow it.. (brain melting is common while watching dark but if you don't have the slightest hook to keep you going you can't watch it anymore) I am not saying they are not smart, I am just saying we need to familiarise them with more time travel media before Dark.

@@NinaPB I if the reacted to it I will be there no matter what! I love the series to death but I am just saying if they can't understand time travel mechanics and family lines even a bit, it will become a chore for them that is what I don't want to happen I them to love it as much as I did! They were getting confused in Loki for some parts which is not at all complicated with that in mind I said they should watch some time travel stuff before Dark.

Luckily there is the official Dark Website to keep track of the family tree without getting spoiled. Plus, taking notes is very helpful as well. I just thought they could have fun with this show, trying to figure out what is going on. For me this show is just mind blowing
