Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
Shōgun follows the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.

A little strange to hear him called Yoshii :)) Japanese actually pronounce last name first, so in "Yoshii Toranaga" Yoshii is actually his Last Name and Toranaga is his first and thats how they call him - Toranaga-sama (-sama being a honorific) Similar as "Toda Mariko" and "Toda Hiromatsu" (her grandfather in law)

Fyi, please don't forget Japanese pronounce their names backward to our English. ( ie last name is first & first name is last). U fellas keep missing this & I really had hoped by now u would have picked up on that. One Piece was huge & then some AOT characters & now this show. Prob forgetting some others, but I really hope u get this comment cause a lot of folks have been telling u guys this in all these shows. Fingers crossed u read this before next ep or 2 are watched!!❤ ps he wanted him to bathe lol. Thanks fellas, ur awesome ❤💞❤️

He was often called a 'tanuki' (called a raccoon dog in the west), which were known for being cunning tricksters that could give foxes a run for their money. And anybody here unfamiliar with tanuki should do an image search for them (real ones, not the funny looking statues of them that are popular), because they're friggin' adorable. Which reminds me of a fun little tidbit for any Animal Crossing fans who happen to see this: Tom Nook is a tanuki in the Japanese version (they made him a raccoon for the localization), his name even being a play on the word, and one of the many ways they were known for being cunning tricksters was as wily businessmen. A common scam pulled by tanuki in folktales was using their magic to turn leaves into seemingly valuable items to trade, only for the items to turn back into leaves once the spell wore off and the tanuki was already long gone. That's why the furniture items you buy in the game can turn into leaves to be carried around. Plus the reason Redd is Tom Nook's business rival is because foxes were considered natural rivals of tanuki since they were both tricksters that loved pulling one over on humans, often trying to outwit each other.

I was ready to tear this show apart when I sat down to watch it, and was consistently surprised at how little there was to criticize, and what little there was was far too minor to be anything more than a nit-pick. Movies like The Last Samurai and games like Ghost of Tsushima had me jaded when it came to western-produced media portraying Japan. Hiroyuki's insistence on the involvement of Japanese consultants and historians was the key here, and I wish more western studios would take that route. Aspects of westernization always stand out like a sore thumb when inserted into depictions of Far Eastern cultures.

In the novel ALL of Toranaga's people on the ship have to learn to dive. In the nude! Which is the true Japanese way. So Toranaga's "swimming outfit" in the show is an alteration just for the western audience. You can guess that John has to dive quickly again when he sees Mariko naked ...

Historically Hatamoto is an important title. He basically becones a samurai (just like William Addams the rl version of John Blackthorne) but an special one. It translate as "man of the flag" and that makes him important between the samurai. Also Anjin means pilot. In Japan back in the day regular people didn't have names they were called the thing they do (cook, cleaner, gardener, etc) so the first name they gave him was anjin because he works a pilot. On the other hand you have courtesans named usually after flowers and samurai "clans" named with their clan name first and their actual name second (Toda Mariko, Toda Hiromatsu, Toda Hirokatsu, etc)
@kenjutsukata1o1

Yes! Which would you like to see? I personally think Tai-pan or King Rat. They have both had movies made already, but more modern versions could be good, similar to 1980 Shogun vs 2024 Shogun. The Tai-pan movie was so-so (the book is amazing and it needs a better live action film/mini-series to represent it), but I loved King Rat (both book and movie).

@@FaithIsDogma Not that they couldn't pull it off with the other books, but since Shogun's a Japanese story & most of the production ppl are Japanese or Japanese-American, maybe Gai-Jin as a spiritual successor to Shogun instead of Tai-Pan, King Rat or Noble House?!

The Japanese didn't know how to dive, at least according to the book. Torunaga watched a few times then tried until he got the hang of it, doing so many belly flops and back flops that a less determined and prideful man would've quit in pain until another day. Then they did race to the shore. The other Japanese also took part in the lesson, including Mariko, and unlike John, they all stripped, to his intense embarrassment. Nudity was no big deal to them, including in mixed company. Nudity is still not a big deal in Japan.

yeah, they would have to essentially write a script from scratch because there was no Shogun 2 book. And then you run into the question...if James Clavell did not write it, should it happen? There is plenty of history that they could base a season 2 on (even immediately following the events where this story ends), but again, they would have to write a script from scratch by someone other than a Clavell.

@@Alexs.2599 I know it is based on a 1975 novel, I have a copy sitting next to me and have read it numerous times since watching the 1980 miniseries when it aired in 1980. @@Alexs.2599 Both the showrunners and some cast have expressed interest (in interviews) in possibly doing a second season (especially Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo). Of course, just thoughts and ideas now, who knows if it'll actually happen. But it has been getting such positive reviews that if Hulu/FX wants to dump another black ship worth of money into it, maybe they can justify doing a second season. The biggest hurdle will be writing a worthy script, something equal to the original story. I think I read somewhere that it took Clavell like 5 years to research and write the book, so it'll take time no matter what without Clavell involved. It took them 11 years to bring this current adaptation to the small screen, from project announcement to airing the first episode. James Clavell's daughter, Michaela Clavell, was an executive producer on this 2024 miniseries, so I would think that she would be happy for it to continue as long as it pays homage and respect to the original.

Give them a break. The character's name is "Toda Mariko." They're used to a person's given name being first and their family/married name being second. With a show with such a huge cast filled with unfamiliar names, they're likely using "cheat sheets"/imdb to help remember the names, and her character's full name is listed on imdb as "Toda Mariko."

Toda is her married surname, Mariko is her given name. Traditional Japanese format is Surname Given Name. Her birth surname was Akechi (Akechi Mariko, daughter of Akechi Jinsai, the traitor). Toda Hirokatsu (Buntaro), her husband, is the son of Toda Hiromatsu, who is Toranaga's (Yoshii Toranaga) right hand man and main general. Perhaps you ought not to project your reactions onto others. As Alexs.2599 points out, that is how the novel ends and the 80s adaption too. The quality of the series has nothing to do with including what you wanted to see. If you were engaged in the series all the up until that point, I suggest you watch it again since that expectation is no longer there. You may see the value of not including it.

If looking at the weakest episode in show then maybe 6 but even then it was so good

Huh? I actually thought this was better than 1 and 2. I've watched the whole season twice and watched several reactions. This is by no means a weak episode imo.

All the episodes are solid so calling episode 3 weak is a stretch.

@@knaditya8228 not by a mile. The brothel scene alone is one of the best in the show.
