This year's WBC was one of the best sports tournaments ever witnessed, and watching from start to finish, almost every pitch of the games that Japan was part of. I'm rooting for White Sox even more again, and keeping my eyes on the team 300 miles southwest in the Cardinals and Lars Nootbaar. And also Japanese baseball, I have to be paying attention to another great baseball league in the world when I live in Japan!

Yes, the baseball world won. Ohtani is a phenomenon to enjoy and revive the baseball world in US and internationally. He transcends the sport, an athlete for the ages. Team Japan played baseball w excellence in every phase of the game. His speech to teammates before the game was powerful and eloquent. During the usual interviews he gives, he tends to be very humble, not boasting or denigrating anyone, not offering much insight. But in that speech to the team, he spoke to their mindset, challenging them to set aside their awe of the opponent, and spurred them to victory. I think it’s shameful that Fox had this game and the preceding one on their FS1 channel instead of the main Fox channel, where the mindless sitcoms and phony dramas of the typical lineup were more important than a great baseball tournament. It shows how little they care about a playoff series that was as exciting as a World Series but with even more unique elements in the mix. The series was also a minor story or completely ignored most of the time on ESPN, until they suddenly gave it some attention after the final game with that closing matchup drama became such an iconic and powerful sports moment.

As a first gen Cuban American, I fell in love with the WBC in 2006 because I got to finally see Cuba play against some of the best the USA has to offer. And of course, along side Cuba, I’m always rooting for a USA win. But having the best player this game has ever seen (Ohtani) in this years tournament….how can you not root for the Unicorn?! Last nights game might as well have been played on a cornfield in Iowa. We all got to witness Baseball Lore. What a blessing.

For me, this whole series was very Charles Dickens. As an American living in Japan rooting concurrently for USA and Japan until the best/worst of times materialized-USA v Japan. Oh my. Maybe it would be a blowout where I could easily cheer for the leading team while giving sincere condolences to the trailing. No dice. Certainly it would not come down to the most volatile confrontation where in the 9th inning flaming 100 mph+ pitches meet explosions off powerfully solid swings. Certainly it would not comedown to a last bat with a full count between two titans, both my favorite players from my favorite team in the MLB. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times…both at the same time. Thank you, Charles Dickens-San. Congrats are due in both directions.

Here's what i don't get. Do football players earn during the world cup? Coz i feel like the reason players, both basketball and baseball players, don't like Olympics and WBC is because there's no money in it. Like if they get injured during these tournaments, they're most likely going to lose money.

If the purpose of WBC is to develop the world of baseball and expand the baseball market around the world, MLB should reconsider how they approach to WBC and cooperate with Team USA. Most countries treat this tournament as like a World Cup in soccer, not as an exhibition game.

In Japan, there is an aphorism that the next game after winning with a large number of points should be taken seriously. Because the feeling of an easy game from the previous match remains. In the previous game, Japan reversed to Mexico in the final innings. There was this mood of rising luck.

In the 150 years since American educator Horace Wilson began teaching his students in Tokyo about baseball in 1872, Most of the game is tactics between the pitcher and the batter. Hold your breath and concentrate. Pitchers when pitching, batters when batting. It leads to martial arts, and to Zen. When you get greedy, you lose the battle. Go innocently. Don't loose your tension even for one pitch. The tension continued, and the game was so good that couldn't move. I'm glad it's American and Japanese audiences who know that well. The Japanese have really loved this sport. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig also came to Japan. Don't get carried away. The joy of winning is only one day. After 150 years, we still haven't caught up with America yet.

Shades of Satchel Paige vs. Josh Gibson In 1942, the Kansas City Monarchs beat the Homestead Grays in the Negro League Championship Series. But one highlight remains forever in the books: Satchel Paige, the greatest pitcher at the time, faced off against a man with “more home runs than Babe Ruth,” Josh Gibson. Satchel struck him out with the bases loaded after Gibson fouled two pitches off of him. This at-bat between Ohtani and Trout resembled that in the modern age. The best of the best going up against each other. And maybe we’ll see it again if Ohtani signs outside Anaheim.

The USA lost the game because they do not know how to bunt! Throughout the tournament they showed zero ability to bunt, and it hurt them in the last inning against Japan. Mookie Betts did not know how to bunt and ended up hitting into a double play. This is very important, and the American media is silent about it.
