Many games in a short period. Dodgers, 1989. July 21-23. Double header, single game, double header. Dodgers, 1988. June 17-19. Double header, single game, double header. and finally Dodgers, 1987. July 7-8. *BACK TO BACK DOUBLE HEADERS!* I scored those games and it was such a pain in the ass swapping tapes in and out of my array of cassette recorders. Oh, yeah. Dodgers got swept in those 4 games in 2 days. 3 1-run games, two of them walk offs in extra innings. Because of course you need extra inning games in back to back double headers. CARDINALS DEVIL MAGIC!!

Do you think more lefties get these calls since they can easily leave the box and head to first without crossing in front of the plate? Seems like they can pull the “I’m outta here” a little easier.

i think lefties have an advantage, since when they bail, they're moving away from the plate & not crossing in front of the ump. when righties jump the gun and move towards first, i think some umps feel like the batter is showing up the ump, but the lefty move is less "offensive"

One thing that needed to be taken into account is the number of 1st pitches thrown. Fried’s counting stats (barrels, hits, etc) were really low because he’s thrown half as many first pitches as the other guys, not necessarily because his stuff is that much better. Though, at the same time Fried’s stuff is awesome…

Umpire's opinion: On that third Ohtani clip, the umpire is set up a little too inside, facing the zone at an angle. With the pitcher set up to the outside, the umpire has a perfect slot to get centered on the zone. At that angle, with a tricky low-outside pitch, the "stolen walk" is the umpire's fault.
@dsmith2420
@dsmith2420 24 күн бұрын
You’d agree the hitters aren’t influencing any of these calls right? Some were just straight up missed (the Red Sox example). But I fully expected most scenarios to be tricky angles outside to LHs or a huge missed spot. If the C wants it painted away and the P completely misses on the inside corner that rarely gets called even if technically a strike. If we didn’t have the K zone box I would’ve thought that first Ohtani clip was a ball just based on how far the C had to reach for it. I don’t think Ohtani “framed” any of them. When I was playing umpires loved ringing your ass up if he thought you were showing him up presuming his call lol

If you look at the box on Ohtani's At-Bat against the Angels, it appears to be a little low. Just below the kneecaps is the rule, but the box is positioned just below Ohtani's kneecaps in his stance, but not if he was standing up straight. I've noticed the box is always positioned by a player's stance and not their actual height! Notice that Ohtani's base is slanted slightly, and his low strike zone would come up an inch or so if he was standing tall making the lowest portion of the strike zone a bit off. I call that last pitch a ball also. I'm a Cubs fan and am not an Ohtani fan but am just thinking objectively here!

The first 3 AB's for Ohtani, the catchers did a horrible job framing the pitches. O'Hoppe is my favorite, but he didn't do Sandy any favors moving his glove up so high like that. The Colorado catcher is completely out of position reaching over his body, then trying to sell it by framing it. Not gonna work buddy.
@dsmith2420
@dsmith2420 24 күн бұрын
No kidding. I know that’s become the trendy thing for C’s but dude when your P absolutely paints one at the knees and your frame job ends up top of the zone you’re not getting that call. Idk if I’d put the Rockies one on the C but you’re absolutely correct. When you miss a spot that badly you’re likely not gonna get the call-always drove me insane but from an ump’s perspective you can understand why it’s tricky. Some of these are borderline the umps just flat missed. That Red Sox one was the worst cuz he nailed his spot, it was received perfectly and the ump couldn’t have been in better position. I don’t think the batters are actually influencing anything at all though.

Not sure if it’s right or not but at 17:55 I’ve got a pretty confident guess Soto was talking about Blake snell since I saw a Trevor May breakdown a few weeks ago of Snell only throwing his slider and curveball for strikes 31% of the time which isn’t very good, and in Soto’s first AB against Snell he took him yard seeing 3 FB’s for strikes (3rd one he hit for the HR) with the 2 balls being a slider and curveball nowhere near the zone. Snell in summary basically only throws his fastball and change ups for strikes with his change up being his 4th best pitch and I’m sure with Soto being Snell’s teammate for a year and a half watching him in LF with the padres as well as everyone on earth knowing Snell’s ridiculously high walk rate picked up on it simultaneously helping himself go yard and Judge who was a dreadful 1/22 lifetime vs snell prior to the game hit a first pitch fastball single in his first AB vs Snell since Snell basically only throws his FB and CH for strikes.

It would appear that in some cases the umpire is responding with resentment to the catcher’s attempt at framing the pitch. So, the pitch is called a ball, not so much because it’s not a strike, but more so because the catcher is framing.
